Today we celebrate Our Blessed Lady’s Birthday. Her coming into the world is momentous and pivotal in God’s saving plan, because the Mother of His promised and long-awaited Son, He Who will save the world from sin and death, now herself is born.

Both Heaven and earth rejoice because the Great King is at hand and His Virgin Mother is made ready by God’s Grace.

“Impart to your servants, we pray, O Lord, the gift of heavenly grace, that the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin may bring deeper peace to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of salvation” (Opening Prayer of the Mass on Our Lady’s Birthday).

The Assumption Of The Blessed Virgin Mother

August 14th, Memorial of St Maximilian Mary Kolbe, Priest and Martyr (1894 - 1941).

Maximilian Kolbe was lovingly devoted to the Most Blessed Virgin Mary since his earliest days. He grew up to be a Franciscan priest and Our Blessed Lady's "knight in shining armour", singing her praises, extolling her virtues and defending the Truth of Jesus her Son.

He would lay down his life for the Faith of Jesus Christ and go to be with his Heavenly Mother, on the eve of the Feast of her glorious Assumption.

As a priest, Fr Maximilian Kolbe knew how to use the media as an instrument for the spread of the Gospel, putting especially the print media at the service of the Christian Faith. When the evil ideas of Na**sm began to poison minds and lives in Europe, St Maximilian went on the counterattack by circulating literature, which he had penned and printed, challenging Hitler's monstrous falsehoods. He also manned a radio station which sought to counteract N**i propaganda.

Because he would not desist from upholding God's Truth entrusted to His Church, St Maximilian Kolbe was eventually arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Auschwitz. In that dark place of stark terror and pitiless horror, he continued, as a priest, to love and serve God, bearing witness to the "Light shining in the darkness" which the darkness cannot dim (John 1:5).

It so happened, one day, that three prisoners managed to escape. The N**is rounded up a large group of inmates and choose ten men at random to be killed to make an example and as a warning to other would-be escapees.

One of those chosen (Franciszek Gajowniczek) began to beg for his life, pleading to be spared on account of his wife and children. At this point, there stepped out of the crowd a man who offered to take the pleading prisoner's place. "Who are you?", barked the guard. "I am a Catholic priest", replied prisoner #16670. Astonishingly, the Kommandant agreed to allow St Maximilian Kolbe to go instead of the man who had pleaded to be spared.

St Maximilian and nine other prisoners were taken to be sealed in an underground bunker where they would be starved to death. For two weeks their slow death dragged on. Throughout the ordeal, St Maximilian led his fellow condemned prisoners in prayer and comforted them. A janitor later testified that the saint was always on his feet and would look calmly at everyone who came to observe the progress of the dying prisoners.

On August 14th, only Fr Kolbe remained alive and, since the guards needed the bunker for another purpose, they injected the saint with carbolic acid. The following day, the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary Immaculate, the body of St Maximilian Mary Kolbe was thrown into the incinerator at Auschwitz.

He had no fear of evil in the valley of the shadow of death. His body was merely incinerated in an oven but his spirit went forth from Auschwitz, with his Blessed Mother, to see the Glory of the Eternal King, whose Love is stronger than Death (Song of Songs 8:8).

The man whose life was saved by the intervention of St Maximilian Kolbe, Franciszek Gajowniczek, survived Auschwitz and the war. He would live until he was 93, dying on March 13th 1995, in Brzeg, Poland. He said during a visit to the Church of St Maximilian Kolbe in Houston, Texas, USA, in 1994, "so long as I have breath in my lungs, I consider it my duty to tell people about the heroic act of love by Maximilian Kolbe."
