The flood season is starting in Champhone district as rain has not stopped for a week.

The village of Nonsithan, surrounded by reservoirs and the Xe Champhone River, will become an island for the next few days. Motorbikes become useless and people have to cross the dam with water up their chest to buy food in the next town.

Friday 5th March, we celebrated the official opening of Monkey Forest in Champhone District, Savannakhet province, with the local authorities and communities 🌳🐒🌳
The site is now managed by villagers that will welcome you, sell you ticket (creating income and allowing maintenace of the site), guide you throught the forest and teach you about the medicinal plants and sacred trees of the woodland, bring you to a new area where you can observe the Asian giant beehives throught binoculars, feed the monkeys and watch them play in the monkey playground.
You can also buy local handicraft in the renovated market place near the entrance of the site.

We hope that, with these new activities, people will stop feeding snacks to the monkeys along the road as it creates accidents and a big waste problem in the surrounding villages.

Come see how this site has changed by yourself and have fun with your family !
The site is open everyday from 8:00am to 5:00pm 🎟

Xe Champhone Loop offers a lot of activities to be discovered and an incredible wildlife 🐌 🐒 🐢 🐊

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 🚙 It is a perfect family trip for a week-end out of Savannakhet city or if you want to take your time on the road between Pakse and Thakhek.
The road from Lak35 to ban Nakhou is not good and will take about 20min 🕐 then turn left in Ban Nakhou on a good road that leads you to That Kou, Wat Phoukor (on your left, ⚠️ look for the signboard with the monkeys), Soui Lake where you can have lunch 🐌 and relax, continue to Monkey Forest 🐒 (turn right to Ban Dongmouang) and finally to Wat Nonglamchan.
You can go to Kengkok driving throught the rice fields and reservoirs offering beautiful views (dotted line on the map) to spend the night in a nice guesthouse 🏘.
For your second day you can go to Taleo Old Temple 🕍, on the road to Xonnabouly district, then continue to Turtle Lake 🐢 and finish your trip in Ban Tansoum where you can see baby crocodiles in the main temple 🐊 . If you have more time to spend you can also visit the Eld's Deer Sanctuary in Xonnabouly district 🦌.

Located in Savannakhet province, Champhone has a rich heritage to discover! It is home to several endangered species as the Amyda Ornata softshell turtles and Siam crocodiles as well as macaque monkeys and migratory birds. 🐢🐊🐒
Its main temples are famous in Laos and Thailand for their distinctive architecture and cultural importance 🕍🙏

This loop is currently being developed to create new activities 🔨 by Tétraktys NGO in the frame of the CAWA program run by FAO and the Lao Ministry of Environment
