Xe Champhone loop is a community-based eco-touristic circuit aiming to create income for local communities. It was implemented by Tétraktys NGO, from 2018 to 2022, in the frame of the CAWA program (Climate Change Adaptation in Wetland Areas) conducted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Laos PDR and FAO, and funded by GEF. Indeed one of the two recognized and protected RAMSAR Wetland Areas of Laos is located in the south of Champhone district and is the home of several endangered species like the asian soft-shell turtle. It also represents a source of income for villagers fishing, hunting snails or eels, collecting bamboo, mushroom, red ant eggs ...
Villagers of this area mainly earn a living from agriculture. Unfortunately, due to climate change the floods are being more important every year, degrading crops during the rainy season (up to 100% of the harvest can be wasted in some villages). The farmers cultivate new fields reducing the area of the RAMSAR area, house of an important protected biodiversity. In response to this situation CAWA program's aim is to increase the resilience of local populations facing climate change and to provide a new source of income. Tétraktys NGO has been in charge of improving a touristic circuit that links 5 sites managed by communities, working closely with villagers as well as local authorities (DICT, PICT, DoNRE and PoNRE) on 4 axes:
- Understand the heritage of each site to be able to preserve it
- Strenghten the capacities of local communities
- Develop the 5 sites in a sustainable way
- Promote the Xe Champhone circuit
