Discover the Magic of Manta Ray Snorkeling on the Big Island of Hawaii
Embark on an unforgettable underwater adventure with Manta Ray Snorkeling Tours on the Big Island of Hawaii. As the sun dips below the horizon, the warm Pacific waters come alive with the graceful ballet of manta rays. This is your invitation to witness these gentle giants up close in their natural habitat.
The Big Island is renowned for its unique ecological features and none are as breathtaking as the opportunity to snorkel with manta rays. The island’s western coast offers the perfect environment for these creatures, where the plankton-rich waters attract mantas up to a wingspan of over 12 feet.
Manta Ray Snorkeling Tours provide an eco-friendly and educational experience, emphasizing respect for these majestic marine animals. Under the guidance of expert local instructors, even first-time snorkelers will feel comfortable and safe. Tours typically begin at sunset when the manta rays are most active, setting the scene for a mesmerizing nighttime snorkel.
As you float on the ocean’s surface, powerful underwater lights illuminate the waters below, attracting plankton and, in turn, the mantas. These rays, known for their lack of stingers and gentle nature, perform somersaults and glide through the water with an elegance that is almost otherworldly.
Booking a tour with a responsible operator not only guarantees a magical experience but also supports conservation efforts. These tours often contribute to the research and protection of the manta ray population around the Big Island.
Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler or trying it for the first time, manta ray snorkeling is a bucket-list experience that connects you to the wonders of the ocean. On the Big Island of Hawaii, where the spirit of aloha meets the sea, you’ll carry the memory of dancing with mantas under the stars with you long after your fins have left the water. There is something incredibly majestic about sea turtles. Their gentle temperature. Their adorable faces. The fact that they have been around since the beginning of time! It’s no wonder we get asked, literally, all the time, about where to spot sea turtles when visiting the Big Island.
Before we tell you our secrets, a few things we want to cover just a few things first.
What to expect: While there are about 7 different types of sea turtles, the one you will most likely see on the Big Island is the green turtle. This type of turtle is known for swimming close to shore, and even coming onto shores for some sun basking. These turtles can get up to 250 pounds, live to be 60-80 years old on average, but are sadly, endangered. Which leads us to…..
How to behave around sea turtles: They are amazing. We get it. It’s super tempting to get out the camera, get up close and personal and get the ultimate selfie. But please, respect our turtles.
If you happen to be lucky enough to see a turtle in the water or on land, do not approach or block its movement.
Stay back at least 10 feet (3 meters).
Touching a turtle is not allowed under any circumstances. In fact, touching its shell removes beneficial bacteria and can be harmful to the turtle.
Do not feed or tempt the turtle in any way.
Remember that they are protected by federal and local laws.
Turtles can be seen at any time in the day. They eat and rest all day long (like us). But they do prefer calmer waters.
If planning to search for turtles while snorkeling, be sure to wear proper attire such as sunscreen, water shoes, rash guards, etc. They are often found near rocks so be careful!
