Ahmose-Nefertari statue

Queen Ahmose-Nefertari was one of the most influential and respected women in Egyptian history. This wooden statue shows her standing with her right arm extended on her side. He carries left to chest, to hold the now lost lotus flower. The color of the skin is related to rebirth: black is the color of the most fertile earth.

Did you know?

Tutankhamun was so frail that he probably needed a cane to walk. He was suffering from a particularly nasty bout of necrosis in his left foot. No less than 139 canes were found in his tomb.

When his mummy was examined it was also discovered that he was carrying not one but multiple strains of Malaria. The most ancient evidence of the disease ever recorded.

He was found to have a fracture to his leg, an unusual cavity where his ribs should have been, a cleft pallet, a slightly enlongated skull, and his heart had been removed during the mummification process.

That’s quite a long list of ailments.

The Famine Stela

It is an inscription written in Egyptian hieroglyphics on a 2,5 m high and 3 m wide block of granite located on Sehel Island, Egypt.

The stela tells the story of a seven-year period of drought and famine during the reign of Pharaoh Djoser (ca. 2686 BC–ca. 2613 BC).

It is thought that the stele was inscribed during the Ptolemaic Kingdom, king Ptolemy V (205 – 180 BC) about 2200 years ago.

The top part of the stele depicts three Egyptian deities and in front of them Djoser carrying offerings.

The text describes how the king is upset and worried as the land has been in the grip of a drought and famine for seven years and how the Egyptians are suffering as a result of the drought and that they are desperate and breaking the laws of the land.

At the time of the first translation of the stela, it was thought that the story of a seven-year-famine was connected to the biblical story in Genesis 41(Joseph).

More recent investigations have shown that a seven-year famine was a common thing to nearly all cultures of the Near East: a Mesopotamian legend also speaks about a seven-year-famine and in the well known Gilgamesh-Epos the god Anu gives a prophecy about a famine for seven years.

Another Egyptian tale talks about a long-lasting drought appears in the so-called “Book of the Temple”.

Second Sphinx.

There is a popular hypothesis that the Great Sphinx of Giza was actually one of two. A sister Sphinx has been rumoured to exist at some point during ancient times.

Apparently, according to the Greeks, Romans, Muslims and even the ancient Egyptians themselves, a second huge Sphinx was located on the opposite bank of The Nile.

This placement is thought to represent the invisible dividing line between Northern and Southern Egypt.

Since these kinds of monumental structures usually appeared in pairs it isn’t unreasonable to think that there was once a second Sphinx.

Where is it now?

If it did exist then it was either deliberately destroyed by invading forces or deconstructed by the Egyptians so that they could reuse the material in newer building projects.

So far, archeologists have yet to find any evidence of its existence.

EARLIEST BREWERY IN HISTORY FOUND IN NORTH ABYDOS IN SOHAG

An Egyptian-American archaeological mission headed by New York University and Princeton University has unearthed what they believe to be the earliest high-production brewery in history in Sohag's North Abydos.

The factory is thought to date as far back as the First Dynasty during the reign of King Narmer (credited for the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt around 3100 BC). It's believed that the beer from this factory was reserved for royal rituals.

The remains contain eight large sectors used to produce beer, each containing forty pottery basins arranged in double rows used for heating grain and water. New York University's Dr Matthew Adams claims that studies prove the factory would have produced 22,400 litres of beer at a time. This factory was actually originally found sometime in the early 20th century, but due to imprecise (or simply misplaced) records, it was lost to time (again) until just now.

New artefacts unearthed at Taposiris Magna in Alexandria

The team succeeded in revealing 16 catacombes, inside the big necropolis that was previously discovered, where mummies were covered with a layer of cartonnage bearing gold and others had golden tongues.

The Dominican-Egyptian archaeological expedition from Santo Domingo University has uncovered several artefacts during their excavation work at Taposiris Magna archaeological site in Alexandria.

They succeeded in revealing 16 catacombes, inside the big necropolis that was previously discovered, where mummies were covered with a layer of cartonnage bearing gold and others had golden tongues.

Kathleen Martinez Head of the archaeological mission said that the most interesting part is that all the graves had the heads of the mummies oriented to the west, towards the temple.

She added that two of the uncovered mummies were covered with traces of gold and with unique cartonnage wrapping represented as the mummified God, Osiris from the end of the Ptolemaic period. One mummy wears the Atef crown with gilded horns and a cobra in its forehead. It has a falcon-headed terminal Usekh collar and a golden rectangular pectoral that hangs at the neck.

The mission has also unearthed a beautiful funerary mask of a woman featuring the head, the face, the neck, and the chest, eight golden pieces; two of which are mummies' tongues and the rest are pieces of gold leaf for a diadem.

Eight very well carved marble portrait sculptures from the Graeco-Roman period depicting the facial features of people were also unearthed.

Throughout the last ten years the mission made several interesting discoveries at Taposiris Magna, that shed light on the Greco-Roman period in Alexandria.

Inside the wall of the temple, the expedition had previously found important artefacts such as coins with the portrait and name of the famous queen Cleopatra, several granite royal statues and the foundation plaques of the Taposiris Magna temple that proves that it was built at the beginning of the dynasty by Ptolemy IV.

The God Nun Raises the Sun
Nun, god of the primeval waters, origin of all life and chaos, lifts the barque of the sun god Ra (represented by both the scarab and the sun disk) into the sky at the beginning of time.

Nut, goddess of the Sky, is hanging from above, holding the god Osiris, also hanging from upside down, who holds the sun from above. This union, between the sun and Osiris, represents a solid eternal union between the soul and the body which meant to be a complete resurrection of the human being.
