Once again this week. What was originally a request for a Sintra tour, upon my suggestion ended up as a tour described by my guests as a 10 out 10.
We went through the peaceful and quiet Mafra, Ericeira and surroundings, met some locals and had an awesome lunch at Ponto Final (not the one with months of waiting lists 😎)
Thank you so much for trusting my local knowledge and suggestions.
I feel honored for having the chance to take on tour two very special well travelled guests .

Everyday on Tour is a Great Day!

Despite the summer heat, we made sure to keep today's guests comfortable by adapting the itinerary for a relaxed and enjoyable experience. By avoiding the peak crowded hours, our winery tour turned into a cozy and intimate journey.

The day was perfectly topped off with a delightful lunch at a traditional restaurant.

Sorry, we were so caught up in the moment that we forgot to take pictures of the meal,

Thank you for this amazing day.

Hello there. Here is an informative post for everyone planning to travel abroad...

WHAT IF THINGS GO WRONG?

Warning: Long Post.

First of all.. This is not intended to be a negative post. The purpose of it is to be very realistic as I see plenty of people not assessing a bunch of risks while travelling.
This post has no beautiful Photoshopped pictures and no fake promises. It is what it is. It’s based on my expertise of many years “on the field”. Sorry, but it will be long as warned above.
The eagerness to travel is real. Everybody wants to visit popular destinations, pack their itineraries, or in certain cases, just relax and take a break. But the amount of people who travel without planning for unforeseen circumstances is immense. And from ruinous financial issues, to health and safety problems, everything can happen. So to save you money and minimize some potential risks, here are several guidelines.

Before You Go

Take a Working Phone

A prepared traveller has a mobile phone provider that works internationally or has obtained a local SIM card. Having a working phone overseas is invaluable. Download the local offline map to your Maps app and the local language pack on Google Translate to ensure you’re covered even without a signal. On the Lock screen of your phone, there might be a way to write a permanent message with a S.O.S contact number. Most phones allow that.

Medical Conditions and Special Needs

If by any chance you have any special needs or medical condition, Try to leave at your wallet, or as a tag in your backpack with a card with that information. Also with a S.O.S contact number.

Protect Yourself Online

Backup your photos and documents to the cloud using services like Google Photos or iPhoto. If needed, use a VPN, password manager, and enable two-factor authentication on websites and apps to secure your accounts.

Buy Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is essential. It can cover unexpected costs and emergencies. Make sure to get receipts for everything. Flights, Tours, Accommodations, etc. - Further down you will find a lot more about insurances.

During Your Journey

Know the Local Emergency Information
In some countries, 911 works outside the U.S. In Europe and Central Asia, it’s usually 112. Other regions use different numbers like 999. Google the emergency number for the country you’re visiting or check resources like Wikipedia and the State Department.

Take a Card

At check-in, grab a business card for your accommodation and keep it with your wallet or passport. This makes it easier to explain to a cab driver how to get back, even without speaking the local language. Alternatively, take a picture of the establishment’s front. In case of an emergency, a hotel concierge or a place where you have a reception or a local host will for sure help you a lot more than just a random company managing BnB’s. This is one of the things that can make the difference.

Minimize Risk

Avoid keeping your wallet or passport in your back pocket. Secure your purse or backpack with a small lock. If you can access your items easily, so can someone else.

And What if Things Go Wrong?

There are infinite possibilities of what could happen, but most are unlikely. For the most part, the risks you face daily are similar abroad: cars are dangerous, and pickpockets target crowded areas.
The most important thing to realize is that whatever has happened, it has happened there before and probably to locals as well. Unless you’re in an extremely remote area, hospitals, clinics, and police are there to help.
If you have some preparation like having a working phone and knowing the local emergency number, it can save you crucial time.

And what about Insurances??… They seem so expensive!!!

Well… In Portugal we say “O seguro morreu de velho” . So let’s talk about this:

Why You Should Always Buy Full Insurance and Travel Insurance

When planning your next adventure, securing full insurance and comprehensive travel insurance is a crucial step that should never be overlooked. Here’s why investing in these insurances can make a significant difference in your travel experience:

Peace of Mind

Travel should be about enjoyment and exploration, not worrying about potential mishaps. Full insurance and travel insurance provide peace of mind, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in your journey knowing you're protected.

Financial Protection

Medical expenses abroad can be extraordinarily high. Even a minor injury can lead to substantial medical bills. Comprehensive travel insurance covers these expenses, protecting you from financial strain. Without insurance, you might have to pay out-of-pocket, which can be financially devastating.

Coverage for Trip Interruptions

Flights get cancelled, trips get interrupted, and plans change unexpectedly. Whether it’s due to weather, strikes, or personal emergencies, travel insurance covers these scenarios. This ensures you’re not left out of pocket for unused bookings and additional expenses incurred due to trip changes.

Lost or Stolen Belongings

Luggage can go missing or be stolen, leaving you without essential items. Travel insurance helps you recover the cost of lost or stolen belongings, so you’re not left stranded without your possessions.

Emergency Assistance and Evacuation

In the event of a serious incident, travel insurance often includes coverage for emergency assistance and evacuation. This can include air ambulance services, repatriation, and other necessary support to get you to safety or back home.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage

While no one likes to think about the worst-case scenarios, accidental death and dismemberment coverage can provide financial support to your beneficiaries in the event of a fatal accident. This ensures your loved ones are taken care of.

Liability Coverage

If you accidentally cause injury to someone or damage their property, liability coverage under travel insurance can help cover legal fees and compensation costs, which can be substantial.

Rental Cars: Full Coverage vs. Deposits and False Damages
Renting a car can be a convenient way to explore a destination, but it comes with its own set of risks. Opting for full coverage on rental cars can save you from significant headaches:

Avoid Large Deposits: Rental companies often require a large deposit if you don’t take their full coverage. Full insurance can either eliminate or drastically reduce this deposit, freeing up your funds for other travel expenses.

Protection Against False Damage Claims: Unfortunately, some rental car companies may claim damages that you did not cause. With full coverage, you’re protected against such false claims, preventing unexpected charges on your credit card.

Comprehensive Damage Protection: Full coverage typically includes protection against theft, vandalism, and accidents, ensuring that any damage to the rental car is covered without significant out-of-pocket expenses.

How to Ensure You're Fully Covered:

Enquire About Coverage

Before booking your trip, thoroughly understand what your tour provider’s insurance covers. Ask specific questions about medical coverage, trip interruption, lost belongings, emergency assistance, and rental car insurance. Identify any gaps that might leave you vulnerable.
Unfortunately, some mandatory insurances that have just the minimum coverage amounts will be useless in case you need it… They are cheap for a reason.

Always Opt for Full Coverage

Don’t skimp on insurance. While basic coverage might save you money upfront, it can leave you exposed to significant risks. Full coverage offers comprehensive protection, ensuring you’re covered for all eventualities, from medical emergencies to trip cancellations and more.

Read the Fine Print

Insurance policies can be complex, so take the time to read the fine print on every business agreement you are doing. Understand the exclusions, limitations, and conditions of your policy. Knowing the details can prevent unpleasant surprises later on.

Compare Policies

Not all insurance policies are created equal. Compare different policies and providers to find the one that best suits your needs. Look at coverage limits, exclusions, and customer reviews to make an informed decision.

Keep Documentation Handy

Carry copies of your insurance policy, emergency contact numbers, and any necessary documentation with you. In case of an emergency, having quick access to this information can be crucial.

Conclusion

Travel is an exciting and enriching experience, but it’s essential to be prepared for the unexpected.
Take a bit of your precious time to get prepared beforehand. At least get prepared with the basics about what to do in case of emergency in the place you are going to.
Investing in full insurance and comprehensive travel insurance ensures you can handle emergencies, protect your finances, and enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Before you embark on your next adventure, make sure you’re fully covered.
