Now head diagonally left up the hill on the other side until you reach another sealed track. Turn left and follow the track out of the deer park to the main road. The entrance to Eastnor Castle is in front of you and well worth exploring if you have the time.

Turn right on the main road, follow it for 50 meters and then turn left down a narrow track that brings you to Eastnor Church

Take the path on the right side of the car park signposted to British Camp (Herefordshire Beacon) and wind your way to the 338-metre summit. Its strange shape is due to the man-made iron age fort that used to command the views of this area.

Having absorbed the vista, head south over Millennium Hill, turn left and zig-zag steeply down before turning right. Stick to the path that keeps the forest closely on your right and after a while the path heads into the trees to Peacock Villa

From here the trail heads south. Take either the sealed path around Summer Hill summit and past Beacon Road Car Park, or the gravel track over the hill and along the top of the ridge until it meets the main B4218. Cross the road and take the path heading up the ridge, keeping the public toilets on your right. The obvious trail now follows the top of the ridge over Perseverance Hill, Jubilee Hill and Pinnacle Hill to the top of Black Hill

Start at the North Quarry Car Park (P on the map) and take the trailhead at the southeastern end of the car park towards North Hill. Stick to the higher path as it heads through forest. After passing Ivy Scar rock, turn very sharply right (signed to North Hill) and complete a large zig-zag up the hill. Exiting the trees, join a wide track called the Lady Howard de Walden Drive. Follow it clockwise around North Hill for 90 degrees and then turn left and take the clear trail straight up to the top of Worcestershire Beacon .

Setting off along the River Derwent with the dew still clinging to the grass and the mountains hiding beneath a cover of cloud, the air was laced with the familiar morning chill of the Lake District. Soon, a gradual climb took us further into an amphitheatre of rocky crags. A soundtrack of water running down wrinkled gullies accompanied the slow unveiling of impressive mountain architecture beneath a moody layer of mist.

The Scafell Pike Corridor Route takes advantage of an interconnected series of mountain shelves which steadily gain height. This creates a natural trail requiring consistent, but achievable effort, rather than a steep slog like the popular Wasdale Head route.

The trail takes up an excellent position beneath the summit surrounded by some of the best views in the Lake District. With towering crags and deep ghylls, stunning views and hidden tarns, it’s the perfect path for appreciating the diversity of the area.

Buses stop at Seatoller which is a 2-kilometre walk to the trailhead at Seathwaite. Therefore, to get to the Corridor Route via public transport, you will need to add an extra hour to the overall walk duration to get from Seatoller to Seathwaite and back again.

Descend from the summit in a north-east direction following the cairns. The path drops down then climbs back up Broad Crag, then drops again, climbing back up Ill Crag before flattening. (At point 5 on the map there is an easy optional detour to the summit of Great End).

This walk up Scafell Pike via the Corridor route is long but not technically difficult. Hands may be needed on the odd short rocky section, but there are no knife edge ridges, difficult scrambles or vertiginous drops near the trail.

The path is generally well defined, but it can be slightly indistinct at times, so keep an eye on your map and pay attention to the signs. In a couple of places the path is slightly exposed over the (very picturesque) ravines.

Perhentian Islands
The Perhentian Islands are a small group of beautiful, coral-fringed islands off the coast of northeastern Malaysia, not far from the Thai border. The two main islands are Perhentian Besar (“Big Perhentian”) and Perhentian Kecil (“Small Perhentian”). Kecil attracts more travellers as it has cheaper accommodation, while Besar is a little more expensive and caters more to families and those who want to avoid the backpacker party scene.

The Perhentian Islands offer some great diving and excellent snorkeling. In addition to coral and fish, the Perhentians are home to sea turtles and several species of shark. The islands are also crisscrossed by small paths connecting one beach to another, but be prepared to sweat and swat off bugs if you tackle any of these.

There is very little luxury accommodation on the Perhentian islands. with the top of the line being air-conditioned chalets and the bottom being a bunk in a longhouse. Discounts are usually negotiable in the off season but the better accommodation can get snapped up fast especially on weekends and holidays.

Melaka
Commanding an important position on the busy sea route between India and China on West Malaysia’s southwestern coast, Melaka was ruled and battled over for centuries between Indian, Portuguese, British and Dutch governments. As a result, this modern day Malaysian city is now a popular tourist destination packed with architecture, culture, traditions and cuisine all reflecting its rich heritage.

Known as a cultural melting pot, Melaka comprises several districts that all feature their own distinct attractions. The Portuguese Settlement is characterized by charming villas, historic churches and the remains of an old fort. In the Chinese quarter is Malaysia’s oldest Chinese temple, the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, as well as one of the largest Chinese cemeteries outside the country of China. The Dutch district features some of the oldest Dutch architecture in the East. Additionally, each cultural zone features its own traditions and festivals such as the Portuguese “Intrudu” and Chinese New Year.

Bringing winter sun to travellers flying from Edinburgh, Virgin Atlantic's new route to Barbados puts the Caribbean island firmly on our list for 2022. The route from Scotland's capital to Barbados marks the first time Virgin Atlantic has flown international flights from Edinburgh in its 37-year history. It's also Scotland’s only direct flight to the Caribbean.

With Virgin flights from both London Heathrow and Edinburgh, we've got our eyes on the sun, sea and white sand of this Caribbean idyll for early and late 2022. What's more, a stylish new hotel has arrived in Christ Church, giving you a five-star all-inclusive retreat to experience when you get there. O2 Beach Club and Spa is set on 1,000 feet of the powder white sand on Barbados' south coast. It's the hottest new place to experience indulgent dining, top-notch pampering and a trio of pools.

Fresh from its Olympic and Paralympic success, Japan is a dream holiday destination that should be firmly on your list for 2022. This year, however, it's time to go beyond Tokyo and explore the country's rural side. Japan's newest bullet train route, Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, is set to open between Nagasaki and Saga in autumn 2022. This will help speed up Nagasaki connections from the current Kyushu bullet train line that comes into Fukuoka from Tokyo.

The trains themselves will be called kamome meaning 'seagull,' following the popularity of lockdown video game franchise, Ghost of Tsushima, which is set on the stunning archipelagos surrounding the city of Nagasaki. Over the next decade, there will also be new bullet train lines joining Tokyo directly to traditional Fukui, snowy Sapporo and passing through the Nakasendo walking trails of the Kiso Valley. Japan is set to be one of the biggest rail holiday destinations of the future...

If ever there was a year to visit the Netherlands, it's 2022 when the Floriade floral spectacle takes place, with its timely eco-theme of ‘growing green cities’. Held every 10 years, the Floriade Expo returns for six months from April to October and will bring an array of unique and fascinating exhibitions to Almere, near Amsterdam.

With a focus on imagining sustainable, city living for the future, you can expect inspiring gardens, workshops and exhibitions mixed with striking attractions and tasting sessions. The 150-acre site is also where 300 eco-homes have been built, with plans for the area to be turned into a green residential neighbourhood of 660 homes, so if you're after a sustainably-focused holiday destination for 2022, Holland is the place worth considering.

Of course there are better art museums in the world but the Miho Museum near Shigaraki is a must-see for its incredible architecture.

Most of the museum is built underground into a mountain and to get to the art collection you need to walk through a tunnel and then cross a bridge set amidst tranquil woodland. And at least it's not abandoned.

In Taiwan, 'family villages' were built in the 1940s and 1950s to provide housing for soldiers and their families.

As a family village in Taichung was being abandoned over the years, one of its only remaining residents, a veteran in his late 80s, started covering everything in colourful paintings. The Rainbow Family Village is now one of the area’s leading attractions.

About halfway between Revelstoke and Sicamous, B.C. is the kind of attraction that puts most theme parks to shame. The Enchanted Forest is a fairytale world of handcrafted figurines, a castle, a tree house, a stump house and dungeons in an old-growth forest. Right next door there is an adventure park. Visitors to New York City often overlook Staten Island but this borough provides some of the best photo opportunities you’ll find in the city.

The Staten Island Boat Graveyard (also known as The Witte Marine Scrap Yard) is where ships come to die and is eerily beautiful. Though not exactly romantic.

With so many amazing places to visit in the world, it seems unfair that only a few get all the publicity. Dig a little deeper though and you’ll find incredible destinations that you probably didn’t know existed.
They’re not necessarily off the beaten track but they’re often overshadowed by more famous attractions in the same region. Why not give them a chance when you plan your next trip?
Located in the Arequipa region, the Colca Canyon is actually Peru’s third most visited attraction but it’s completely overshadowed by Machu Picchu.
The canyon is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and is home to hot springs, archaeological sites and the Andean condor.
