Chimps Facts
Once found throughout the tropical forests of West and Central Africa, today only around 150,000-250,000 chimpanzees remain in the wild. Sadly, since the early 19th century populations have declined because of habitat loss, hunting and wildlife trade.
Each of the 92 chimpanzees we care of, has a tragic past. We work everyday to give them back a bit of what was stolen from them.

Note: This picture was taken the first day the Watoto group went into their new enclosure. For them to feel safe, they were accompanied by keepers. Nowadays, they don’t need keeper’s presence inside the enclosure.

Sharing is caring! And we do care!

Because every life matters ❤️
Each chimpanzee has a unique personality, we owe them a second chance.

Today we are going to post the last series of photos of Garamba. Whoever followed his story remembers that he was rescued by the Rangers of Garamba National Park in June 2015 and then rescued to Lwiro Primates with a C-130

Here you can see another picture of how anxious he was when he was rescued. Followed by some pictures of how he bloomed open and played with the water, made friends,...

Only it would have been so much more beautiful if he could have done this in the free nature with his mom and dad!

Yesterday when we posted the first picture of the Masisi region we mentioned the cheese... This cheese from Masisi is made from the milk of cows that haven't had a single day of stress in their lives.

They live on the green pastures, eat when they want, come in for milking and live a happy life. These ladies are just a but curious... so when you walk arround there they come to see what is happening.

There is more to the Kivu region then the region arround Bukavu and our 2 National Parcs (Virunga and Kahuzi Biega). We will share with you in the next couple of days some pictures of the Masisi region.

Masisi can be compared with the Swiss alps. A lot of pastures, cows, cheesemaking,... We have a partnership with one of the farms where our clients can stay.

As promised during our daily " chimp update " from Lwiro Primates, we will share a few pictures of " Garamba in the next few days ".

Almost all the chimpanzees saved by the CRPL get their name depending on where we were rescued. Garamba was rescued in June 2015 by Rangers of Garamba National Park after his parents were killed by poachers. Using a C-130 aircraft from the UN it was possible to take this orphan boy to Lwiro. Here he was cared forby the staff of the center, who will remember him forever by his soft character, and by his big ears!

We'll share some pictures of Garamba in his loving memory, during our daily chimp picture!

All images were sourced from Lwiro Primates social media.

Last year we suffered a strong respiratory outbreak in Lwiro Primates. Almost every one of the center's rescued chimps became sick. We sadly lost two of our beloved chimpanzees.
We know Covid-19 could affect critically our chimpanzees, is why we are taking all the measures to protect them.

Today is a day for generosity ❤️ please help us to spread the message

Relationships are everything in the Chimpansee world. Relationships between Mothers and their babies, family groups or male coalitions - they are all important in the struggle for survival.

The team at Lwiro Primates (Lwiro Primates ) does amazing work in supporting the individuals who have lost their family relationships to establish new ones that also become important!

Inyambo, the Royal Cattle from Rwanda

In a traditional Rwandan society, a cow was and remains a symbol of prosperity and was a central element when giving names to newbornes.

Under the traditional Rwandan monarchie, Inyambo were kept, trained and brought out to parade in honour of the King during important ceremonies. Great value was given to the Inyambo, characterised by, among others, the long horns.

Inyambo were usually selected trough a rigorous process by breeding high quality cows. The calves were then given special attention and training when growing up. When, for example, on a royal parade, the cows that were draped in neckline beads, couldn't drop their dung in public or even move to chase flies. They were accustomed to people so they weren't afraid of the crowd.

Bellow you can find a picture shared to us by Miss Huguette (Instagram: ) and was taken at the traditional wedding of one of friends.

When travelling with Kivu Safari Group to Bukavu, we can stop at the ancient royal palace in Nyanza in Rwanda, where the Inyambo can be visited.

Some pictures of the Ngweshe region at 30 km from Bukavu. We come here for hiking and relaxing.

If all goes well it will be possible by the end of 2020 to stay in some "authentic" huts. The first one is almost ready.

We were this morning on the phone with our partners from PNKB - Kahuzi Biega National Park. They were on their way to Kavumu airport to fly over the park. With a bit of luck we'll receive later today some images that we could share with you.

The last fly-over has shown some illegal logging in the parc. So we hope that today will show an improvement. We needs as many people to come and visit the Kivu region and this parc so that the authorities could finally understand the impact and the importance of Kahuzi Biega... and help to protect it!

Our partners of Kahuzi Biega National Park (PNKB) are doing everything to save the gorilla's. This gorilla went to the nearby villages (probably because they have been cutting down his natural habitat) and would probably have been killed, if the teams of PNKB wouldn't have been able to come and save him in time.

Great work ICCN!
