Struisbaai hawe is ‘n spesiale plekkie van goeie herinneringe en ontmoetings. Vriendskapsbande word gesmee en versterk terwyl oud en jonk die natuurskoon van die Indiese Oseaan geniet. Nie te vêr hier vandaan, letterlik om die draai vanaf die mees suidelikste hawe op die Afrika-kontinent lê L’Agulhas, die plek waar die magtige Atlantiese en Indiese Oseane mekaar ontmoet.

Struisbaai en L’Agulhas is albei baie gewilde vakansie bestemmings veral oor die plattelandse sjarme en karakter van die dorpies en natuurlik van die mense wie daar woon. Teen middel Desember verander hierdie slapende dorpies in besige vakansie bestemmings. Mense stroom van oraloor om hulle jaar af te sluit langs hierdie pragtige kuslyn.

Vir die wie rustigheid verkies bo die gewoel en dalk net wil wegbreek is hierdie twee dorpies perfek deur die res van die jaar. Anders as gedurende Desember voel dit asof jy die hele dorp, see en natuurskoon vir jouself en jou geliefdes het. Dit voel kompleet soos hemel op aarde.

Struisbaai harbour is a special place of good memories and encounters. Friendships are forged and strengthened while young and old enjoy the scenic beauty of the Indian Ocean. Not too far from here, literally around the corner from the southernmost harbour on the African continent, lies L’Agulhas, the place where the mighty Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.

Struisbaai and L’Agulhas are both very popular holiday destinations especially because of the rural charm and character of the villages and of course of the people who live there. By mid-December, these sleepy towns turn into busy holiday destinations. People flock from all over to end off their year along this beautiful coastline.

For those who prefer tranquility over the hustle and bustle and who may just want to break away, these two towns are perfect throughout the rest of the year. Unlike during December, it feels like you have the whole town, sea, and scenery for yourself and your loved ones. It feels completely like heaven on earth.

Napier Informal Settlement

Many a photographer is out there in pursuit of discovering beauty and to capture that beauty in all its splendour. The concept of beauty and an informal settlement are not very often associated with each other, but this photo of Napier Informal Settlement reminds me of the quote “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”.

As a photographer I am reminded that beauty is everywhere and very much subjective. As I looked over Napier Informal Settlement I wandered what if this place with its zinc and wooden structures could talk, what will the main theme be like? I would like to imagine that this beautiful neighbourhood will stand proud and say that “I am a home to many hard-working individuals. People who go out early in the morning, perhaps against all the odds, come rain or sunshine to earn an honest living”.

We don’t know of all the success stories that are being written right now, but I would like to believe that greatness lies within this beautiful place and many other informal settlements across Mzansi.

Mzansi is truly magical with so much to discover and explore around every corner. In a sense we feel like the great explorers of old who have set their sailes to discover and conquer new land. Around the Corner/Om die draai will be taking you on a journey through the beautiful beloved country, one town and person at a time.

We celebrate the beauty and diversity of every town, big or small and the people who call it home. Just recently we packed our bags and headed for the West Coast.

The West Coast have so much to offer and we would love to showcase a few hidden gems that we found on our journey through this picturesque area.

The first gem we discovered was Blue Bay Lodge and Resort. This hidden gem nestled in the beautiful Saldanha Bay offers B&B rooms, self catering cottages plus wedding and conference facilities. Blue Bay Lodge is built only meters above the wide-stretched beaches of Saldanha Bay.

Reading a book or enjoying a cup of coffee can become a truly magical experience as you overlook the calm turquoise waters of Saldanha Bay. Pictures simply won't do a beautiful place like this justice. You have to come see and experience its relaxing atmosphere for yourselves.

Not a single chucky (small fishing boat) in sight at Struisbaai Harbour at southern most tip of Africa, near Cape Agulhas where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet is one of the most beautiful sights to the people of Struisbaai. This is a sight of hope and promise. They hope that soon their loved ones will return with a boat full of the catch of the day.

Often times they are greeted with disappointment as fishermen return to shore without any catch to show. Ups and downs are part of their daily lives and some days more than others the struggle is real for these humble fishermen.

What we love about these line fishermen is that tomorrow they will go again with hope in their hearts and holding on fast on the promise that their God will provide.
