"The Old Garda Station is a lovely base for exploring the stunning surrounding area. The house is spacious and well equipped, and the beds very comfortable. Nicola was very helpful suggesting jogging routes nearby and we did many of the things listed in the house guidebook. The sauna at Dooey with Mags was a highlight, as was the walk to Glenveagh castle gardens and tea room. We are park run fanatics and found the Narin Beach park run beautiful and friendly, and enjoyed a post run coffee at the Pirates of the Coffee Bean." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

On this day in 1940, John Toland’s bicycle was stolen from outside his house in Lettermacaward. It wasn’t reported to the Guards until the 11th October. Sergeant Francis of Doochary Barracks interviewed a neighbour of Toland’s, who admitted the theft and helped recover the bicycle frame from a lake and the wheels from his own vehicle.

‘Questioned by the Justice, the accused said he saw the bicycle outside Toland’s house this night and thought it was no harm to take it and he did not intend to return it.

Justice—-Glory be— a hundred per cent larceny.’

‘The Justice added that it appeared to him that there had been good police work done by Sergeant Francis and Garda Buckley, especially in view of the time which had elapsed from the taking of the bicycle to its reporting and he wished to recommend them accordingly.’

Have you watched Birdsong on RTÉ? It follows ornithologist Sean Ronayne’s mission to record every bird species in Ireland and is an amazing documentary. It inspired me to get out of bed at 4am and record Doochary’s Dawn chorus. All the birds calling “I’m still here!”

I’m rubbish at bird identification though and the app I downloaded didn’t work, so let me know if you recognise any (there’s definitely a cuckoo in the end clip though).

In July and August, we are open: Tue, Wed, Thurs, Fri & Sun! 🌞

We will also be open on Public Holidays.
