Irregular Sleep Patterns: Shift work can disrupt your natural sleep-wake cycle, making it hard to settle down on your days off.

Stress Accumulation: The high-pressure environment of nursing can keep your mind too active, preventing relaxation when you need it most.

I don't think people realize how little skipping breaks matters when it comes to maintaining high productivity.

We often get caught up in thinking that working through breaks is the key to getting more done, but the truth is, it's just a small piece of the puzzle. What really matters is taking regular breaks to refresh your mind and rejuvenate your body.

I've seen so many nurses struggle with decreased focus and increased errors because they're focusing too much on non-stop work and neglecting the importance of breaks. Don't get me wrong, there are times when the urgency of healthcare demands continuous attention, but it's not the be-all and end-all.

When we shift our focus to integrating short, quality breaks into our shifts, that's when the real magic happens. That's when we start to see improved mental clarity, better patient care, and sustained energy levels, making progress toward our professional goals.

So, let's refocus our attention on what really matters and stop putting so much weight on non-stop work. You might be surprised at how much more productive and effective you can be when you prioritize taking breaks. Here are a few tips on how to take effective breaks:

⭐️Step away from your unit during breaks to change your scenery.
⭐️Engage in relaxing activities during your break like a brief walk, meditation, or just sitting quietly.
⭐️Avoid discussing work during your breaks to fully disconnect and recharge.

My mom once said “All I ever wanted to be was a mom” and she was the best example of what a mom should be.

When my sister would say, “you treat us differently”, my mom would say “you’re right I do because you are different people”.

I learned so much about how to interact with people through this advice.

I try to look at the individual and really listening to each person. Whether this is through a nurse to patient or a travel advisor to client relationship.

I hope all the moms out there realize your kids are listening even when you think they’re not.

You might not know this but ↓

I was feeling frustrated and burnt out in my nursing career.

Scrolling through Instagram and longing for a break to be able to truly relax, but feeling guilty about wanting that time for myself when others need me.

One day I snapped out of it and realized that getting some "me time" isn't selfish, because you have to put your own oxygen mask on first, right?

And that mental shift is what made me decide to start making selfcare a priority.

✅ I now schedule my PTO regularly.
✅ I look forward to my time off.
✅ I feel less stressed and overwhelmed day to day.
✅ I feel recharged and ready to go back to work afterwards.
