Robert Burns was a true Scottish legend and this is one of my favourite quotes.

In Scotland we traditionally celebrate our most famous bard on Burn's Night by eating haggis and drinking a dram of whisky.

Happy Burn's Night everyone!

Ballycarbery Castle in Ireland's County Kerry was built by Clan McCarthy in the 16th century.
Nearby the equally as impressive Caheriveen Ring Forts can be found. Built in the 7th century the ring forts are some of the best examples in the county.

Red berries, purple heather, green and yellow leaves and the ever changing light have made the Cairngorms a very special place to be at the end of the summer.

The Battle of Bloody Bay took place around 1480 off the coast of the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides.
Infighting in Clan Donald came about after John MacDonald of Islay, Clan Chief and Lord of the Isles signed a treaty with the King of England which saw him gain land and wealth but weakened the political power and autonomy of the Lord of the Isles title. His own son Angus Og defeated John and took over the diminished position as Lord of the Isles and leader of a split Clan Donald
The naval battle was said to be so bloody it turned the water of the bay red.

The lighthouse Rubha nan Gall now stands by the bay, built in 1857 by David and Thomas Stevenson.

Fort George was built to house troops to control and police the Scottish Highlands. It was built in the 1700s after the Battle of Culloden and even though the Jacobites were left defeated, the British Government was still fearful that there would be further uprisings. The sheer scale of the fortress that was built to house a governor, officers, an artillery attachment and 1,600 infantry troops, shows how real that fear was.

The aftermath of Culloden saw the government double down on garrisoning troops in the Highlands, they also built a network of military roads and passed a law disarming the rebellious Highlanders, effectively ending the Jacobite cause once and for all.

Fort George has been an active military base throughout its 250 year life and is still in use by the British Army to this day. It is also open to visitors and is home to the Highlanders Museum which shares the history of the renowned Highland Regiment.

St Bride's Kirk.
The ruins of this old Kirk (Scots for church) sit in the historic village of Old Blair near Blair Castle.
It is the final resting place of the past Dukes of Atholl and of John Graham, Viscount Dundee, also known as Bonnie Dundee.

Bonnie Dundee led the Jacobites at the battle of Killiecrankie in 1689 and although the Jacobites won the battle, Bonnie Dundee died from his wounds and left the 1689 rising without a leader.

This part of Highland Perthshire has so much rich history to explore and is the area associated with the The Dukes of Atholl (Murrays) and Clan Donnachaidh (Duncans and Robertsons amongst many other names are associated with the clan).

Just a pile of rocks....well not exactly. This pile of rocks is actually the remains of Dun Borodale on the Isle of Raasay. It was a broch, a complex fortified roundhouse with hollow walls. There are many brochs across Scotland and they vary vastly in how intact they are today.

Passing places....a common sight in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

If you've never been to Scotland before you may not know that a lot of the roads in rural areas are single track. This means vehicles meet each other head on and one driver will use a passing place to let the other past.
There's a certain amount of etiquette that comes along with this, including a polite wave to acknowledge when a driver pulls over.

Kilmartin Glen is absolutely one of my favourite places in Scotland and it will be even better once the museum reopens! It's great to see it get some recognition.

The New York Times dubbed the glen "a misty Scottish Stonehenge".

How beautiful is this ancient rock art, a great example of cup and ring markings.

Photos from a recent scouting trip to Argyll, in the West Highlands. What an amazing mix of sweeping sea views, rugged landscapes and the most incredible variety of thought-provoking historic sites.
Here's some photos of Arichonan, a village that fell victim to the infamous Highland Clearances, and one of the most beautiful places in Scotland I think I have ever been.
I'll eventually be writing a blog about this, and will link once it's live.
More from the Argyll trip to follow...
