Happy 166th Birthday, Nevada City!

Happy (belated) Birthday to Nevada City! 🎉

Yesterday our beautiful little town turned 166 years old, but the rich history of this area dates back to long before the discovery of gold.

The area now known as Nevada City was originally named Ustomah, and for thousands of years was the site of a flourishing Nisenan village.

In 1848 after gold was discovered in nearby Wolf Creek and then later in Deer Creek, the area grew to over 10,000 people, becoming the third largest city in California, behind Sacramento and San Francisco.

The area went through several name changes including Deer Creek Dry Diggins and Caldwell’s Upper Store, before Nevada (Spanish for “snow-covered”, a reference to the snow-topped mountains in the area) was settled upon.

The town of Nevada was incorporated on April 19, 1856. In 1864, the word “City” was added to the name to relieve confusion with the nearby state of Nevada, and the town has legally been known as “Nevada City” ever since.

It’s Arts & Culture Month! Did you know that Nevada County makes up 2 of only 14 designated cultural districts in the state - Grass Valley-Nevada City and Truckee?

Our area is well known for being a haven for incredible art and artists alike, boasting over 100 arts-related organizations producing upwards of a thousand events a year (in a non-pandemic year), scores of annual festivals, street fairs, art walks, and studio tours.

The Nisenan lived here for thousands of years before the cities incorporation as part of a perfectly balanced ecosystem thriving on the Yuba, Bear river watershed – and, over time, their sacred places are being rediscovered and cherished.

Steeped in history and with the most famous gold-mining district in California, the District experienced a ‘cultural revolution’ from the mid-20th Century that has reshaped the local economy, and which continues to influence the statewide arts scene. Starting in the ’60s, Beat Generation and deep ecology poet Gary Snyder, singer Utah Phillips and a host of authors and musicians settled here.
