THE GRUTA DAS TORRES - Pico Island - Azores

In Pico, the volcanic island of the Azores par excellence, you cannot fail to discover a marvel of ecotourism: the Gruta das Torres. This regional natural monument inserted in the volcanic mountain complex is, of course, one of the most characteristic caves in Portugal. The Gruta das Torres is the largest lava tube in Portugal, with a total length of 5150 meters (450 meters can be visited). It is estimated that it formed about 1,500 years ago during an eruption that started in Cabeço Bravo.

The Gruta das Torres owes its origin to lava flows and basalt, of which you can find traces inside. It is a slightly different visit from the usual tourist caves, as you will receive a helmet and an individual lighting system at the entrance - which makes the experience even more unforgettable!

Walking through its tunnels, you will see the stalactites and stalagmites formed by solidified lava and the plant life forms typical of these humid and deep environments: molds, bacteria, and insects in the caves. Because of its uniqueness, it is certainly an attraction not to be missed during your stay on the island of Pico.
