The ancient tradition of Well Dressing has made a welcome comeback to Tissington, a very picturesque village between Ashbourne & Buxton in the Derbyshire Peak District where five wells have been decorated. The exact origins of Well Dressing are unknown, but it's thought to be a way of giving thanks for fresh water. The tableaux are made entirely of fresh ingredients such as flower petals, leaves, even fruit & vegetables. It's on until June 2nd.

Wonderful that Well Dressing is back.

Wonderful that Well Dressing is back.

The Well Dressings in the pretty village of Tissington start tomorrow, and here’s a sneak preview of one of the displays! With six wells, all beautifully decorated with displays created entirely from natural materials, Tissington is continuing a tradition that has happened here since 1348!

This photograph appeared in the Daily Express on Saturday in a centrefold piece about the Mass Trespass to help illustrate the 90 year anniversary showing the view from Kinder Downfall. It has been used before though, it was used by BBC Countryfile Magazine back in 2015 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pennine Way too... quite fitting that the Pennine Way would likely not pass over there, or exist if the actions of the trespassers had not occured... or access to uplands would have been delayed for years more.

Stockport, the town where I was born and knew very little about - that is, until I recently joined a guided walk of the town led by local Blue Badge Guide Jean Bailo. What a treat!

Being Stockport and seemingly often in the shadow of its much larger neighbour to the west, the legacy of the Industrial Revolution quite literally looms very large here from the hulking great 22 arch railway viaduct bridge above the River Mersey, which has dominated the town since its completion in 1840 to the remaining red brick mills close by where my grandmother worked from the age of 11 and the story of the Robinson family at the Unicorn Brewery where horses and drays are still in daily use. We paused at Sandy Brow, where in the summer of 1819, local folk gathered before setting off on the ill fated march to Peterloo.

Architecture ranges from Tudor townhouses in the shadow of the colossal Victorian Market Hall - the town has had a Market Charter since 1260 - to classical Georgian and 20th century brutalist, the latter used recently as a filming location for TV series “Life on Mars” and “Ashes to Ashes”.

And there was culture too, including the town’s Art Gallery and so many musical connections.

For me though, the highlight was the unusual statue which stands very close to the busy and noisy A6. I’ve passed it countless times, but to my shame knew nothing about it. Turns out, this is Stockport born James Conway, former Coop milkman, who joined the Royal Marines during World War 2 then in 1942 became one of the “Cockleshell Heroes”.
Conway was captured and killed but has been honoured in Stockport by this wonderful memorial.

Jean varies her walk routes as there is so much here and I'm really looking forward to joining another of her walking tours.

Fantastic to see this event taking place once again. May the best team win!

Today, Sunday January 30th 2022, on the 373rd anniversary of “His Majestie’s Horrid Murder” the ex*****on of King Charles 1st in 1649, the English Civil War Society once again re-enacted the ill-fated King’s last walk from St James’s Palace to the Banqueting House, all that remains of the great Palace of Whitehall and the site of his ex*****on. This morning as the final cheerful strains of the regimental band at the Guard change at nearby Buckingham Palace gave way to the sombre beat of the drums, the King’s Army solemnly processed along the Mall to Horseguards Parade, where a short service was held before a wreath was placed on the gate at Banqueting House.

A kind of normality is gradually returning to London as the newly restored Elizabeth Tower is becoming visible in all its mid- nineteenth century splendour. The scaffolding, which has concealed the 96 metre high tower since 2017, is coming down. What a triumph, glinting in the January sunshine. To top it all, the chimes of the Great Bell of Westminster - Big Ben - will soon be heard ringing out once again as the original Victorian mechanisms are fully restored to use.

The iconic skyline formed by the Crescent and Devonshire Dome and its clock tower. An impressive sight if you're walking around The Slopes in Buxton.

🍂 Autumn is a wonderful time to enjoy the Peak District, so keep an eye out over the next few weeks for some great suggestions for walks that make the most of the colours in the woods, hills and country lanes.

Our Hartington Dales Walk (5.4 miles) is an absolute stunner! Starting and ending in the very pretty village of Hartington, it takes you through beautiful woodland into Beresford Dale and onwards into Wolfscote Dale, where the path runs beside the crystal-clear River Dove. The route then returns through the steep-sided Biggin Dale and back into Hartington on quiet lanes with superb views.

Please note that the terrain is very uneven in places through the woodland and dales, and some parts of the walk may be wet underfoot after periods of rain. There is parking in Hartington (fees payable) and the village is well served with wonderful pubs, cafés and shops, including a renowned cheese shop. There are also public toilets in the village. Allow around 2 hours to complete this walk at a moderate pace.

🧡 PLEASE keep this beautiful place that way forever. Remember, take only photographs, leave only footprints, kill only time. Thank you.

Recently sampled a touch of Victorian style glamour, based at the Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow, where a drink in the Champagne Central bar overlooking the concourse of the city's Central Station can be enjoyed. Guided tours of the station are offered too, a must for any transport historian.
