It’s taken me a few days to feel like I have my head on straight - thanks jet lag.

This cruise was a wonderful experience. A cruise was a perfect way to see a lot of highlights in a short amount of time. A perk was this allowed my husband to fully relax instead of having to be the driver. One of the many reason I love cruising - we don’t have to drive, we don’t have to cook, someone else is handling the navigation details. It gives us a chance to truly relax. I enjoyed that our itinerary had a few sea days where we could just kick back and do nothing.

After my initial disappointment in our room, it did grow on me, and as I said - I’m not one to let something like that affect my trip. We really didn’t spend much time in our room. The ship’s capacity is 1700 passengers, so in the world of cruise ships it is medium sized. There were many bars and places on board to sit and listen to live music, have a drink, or relax. There were a variety of activities on board, but not as many as some cruise lines. The food was excellent - I had fresh sushi rolls everyday. My husband raves about the food on Holland America.

Overall I enjoy Holland America, and I think it is a good choice for the right person. New Zealand and Australia were both wonderful and I feel should be on everyone’s bucket list. There is so much to see and explore, it can appeal to so many interests.

This is the face of someone who just got off a 15 hour flight…
I’m sad our adventure is over. This was hands down the best cruise we have ever been on - a big part because of the destination, but also because of amazing new friends we made.
I have two more flights before I am home, but I will have some final thoughts to share.

We woke up this morning to calmer seas - and a jungle on the pool deck! There were so many different towel animals, it was fun to try and spot all of them. What an incredible amount of time the crew must have spent on this.

It’s a day at sea as we head back towards Sydney. The seas are rocking and rolling. We spent the morning in the thermal spa. At time the hydro pool resembled the ocean going back and forth

We said goodbye to New Zealand and are headed back towards Sydney. We still have two days left to enjoy the ship. It was bittersweet to say goodbye - such a beautiful country. We will return!

The glow worms cooperated! As you would expect, it is hard to capture on camera. In person it look like you are staring up at stars, but here you see the bits of light. While it was a short excursion, it was interesting to see.

Today is our last stop in Bay of Islands. We have an excursion planned to go see a glow worm cave, which I’m really excited about. I hope the worms cooperate to give us a show!

We got to be one of the first people starting 2025 thanks to our current time zone. We spent the day in Auckland. Auckland is the biggest city in New Zealand. Our tour showed us many of the city highlights, including getting many beautiful viewpoints of the city, volcanic craters, and a stop by the National War Memorial Museum. The highlight for me was seeing some Māori artifacts including a large waka (canoe).

I have said before - Holland America has amazing food. This evening we did a special New Year’s Eve dinner (a gift from my parents) and it was a wonderful way to celebrate the coming new year. Each course was better than the next, and it made the evening extra special.

For the first time in many years, I made it to midnight. There was an amazing party on deck with live music followed by a DJ. Evening complete with a champagne toast

Today we took a tour of the Rotatua (Row-tah-roo-ah) area. Our first stop was Wai-O-Tapu, a geothermal area. It was a rainy/misty morning, so it made everything quite streamy and at times a bit difficult to see. Many steam vents, mud pots, and the “Champagne Pool” named this because of the continuous bubbles. We then moved on to Te Puia, a Māori cultural center. We learned about the Māori people, their traditions, and the importance of the geothermal area. We were able to watch a haka, saw a kiwi bird, and got to see a geyser in action. On our way back to port we stopped to see a waterfall and a kiwi fruit farm. A fascinating, whirlwind day.

Today we were scheduled to be in Gisborne, which would have been a tender port - meaning you leave the ship in a smaller boat to go to shore. However, the seas are too rough for tenders to run safely, so we will be having a day at sea. While it is disappointing to skip a port, safety is more important. The crew is currently reworking the day’s schedule, so we shall see what kind of activities there are to try today.

After we finished our bike tour we spent some time in the town of Napier. Napier is know for their art deco style buildings - it reminded me of my time in Miami. Napier was devastated by an earthquake in 1931, and when the town rebuilt art deco was the style of the time. The town has really embraced this era. It was so fun to just wander around and duck in and out of shops.

Today we were in Napier, and we did an e-bike ride and winery tour. The bike ride was a total of 16 kilometers, which when assisted by an e-bike was pretty easy. We followed the coastline for a portion, then road through an estuary (and saw lots of birds), and finished through farmland. It was gorgeous! We finished at Church Road winery for a wine tasting. Another gorgeous day here!
