A must visit while we are in Greece.... the famous monastery of Hozoviotissa in Amorgos, Greece located on the Aegean Sea! This 11th- century structure was renovated as an ode to the Grace of Panagia (also known as the Virgin Mary) and the protector of the Island! 🇬🇷

Did you know...Holy Saturday is the only Saturday for the Greeks when the consumption of olive oil is not allowed?
It is a day of strict fasting, during which the faithful abstain from olive oil and wine. It is the Orthodox Tradition to fast from food products that contain blood. So, Greeks fast from meat, fish, dairy products, oil, and wine. (Oil and wine, up until the last couple of centuries, were stored in skins of animals. This is why they can eat grapes and olives, but they cannot have wine or olive oil).
In the ancient world, virgin olive oil was called “liquid gold” by Homer and “the great healer” by Hippocrates. Olive oil is part of the fabric of Greek culture...and today Orthodox Christians are called to fast.
It's Holy Friday in Greece...the most mournful day for Greek Orthodox Christianity in recognition of Christ's crucifixion and death.
The day is filled with church services and ritual. Women and children decorate the church epitaph (an icon representing Christ's tomb) with flowers of various colors and sizes. In the evening, believers with candle in hand follow the priest and epitaph and somberly process around the neighborhood, ending in the church. The procession pauses before the church’s entrance so that every attendee who wishes can enter the church by passing under the epitaph symbolizing entering into death and the resurrection of Christ.🇬🇷
Today is Holy Thursday in Greece...the day that Greeks make bread called tsoureki and dye eggs red before Easter! After the Resurrection on Easter, the person who successfully cracks the eggs of the other person is the winner of a year of good luck!
