Well done Marjorie! race report Sat 23rd April. “Today, I took part in the Otley CC 10mileTT on the V212 course (known to me as “the cheese grater” because of its bad tarmac and pot holes). This was a special day for two reasons, one being that it was my first TT since having had Covid just two weeks ago, but the main one is that this event last year was my first ever TT, so events wise it was my anniversary TT and meeting my venue very good friend Gill, with whom I now meet up with for every race😊🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️. The weather was fine apart from a terrible headwind on the way back, and the most horrid and painful stitch on my right side, courtesy of post Covid lingering breathing issues 😖😖…Still in spite of these less than ideal conditions, with the help of my new, lighter wheels and increased overall strength, I got a very decent 33:12. One thing that made me really pleased is that I never lost sight of the rider that set of one minute before me and that the other super riders who usually overtake me and my trusted basic road (include one from EF Procycling) mostly only did so well into the return leg of the course. 😂 Small positive notes but I will take that! 😊 Now, I hope to see more Thorpers have a go at Time Trialling for the club’s 10mile TT on the 15th of May! Come on! 😃”

Racing update September.
Tim Lane had another energetic and head spinning month of racing competing
in multiple events, some at the National level. David Lane his Dad continued to enter almost every cycling event going! Marjorie Davison - a newcomer to Time Trialing significantly improved on her times on a basic road bike. Paul Brierley and David Taylor continued to put in very solid times in the TTs coming in faster than most of their peers of a similar age.

TT newbie Marjorie Davison continues to improve
over ten miles on a regular road bike - on Sun 12th Sept Marjorie entered
the Holmfirth CC TT on the V210 course near Dalton and despite
a week of sleep deprivation courtesy of her young daughter Marjorie
managed to reduce her time by 2mins and 4 seconds! to 30min 28sec.
The course start line was 5miles from the HQ on country lanes, but this actually made for a great warm up and cool down.

On Sat 26th Sept. Marjorie took part in her third and final 10 mile TT for this year. It was organised by the Harrogate Nova CC on the V212 course near Arkendale.
Despite having no time to do any training Marjorie managed to hold a better aero position and reduced her time on this course by a minute and a half to 31.02.
Marjorie is already planning winter training to come back even stronger in 2022!

Tim and David Lane, Angus Owens

Yomp Bonk Crit E/1/2/3, 4 August:

Getting racing going again at the Forge Valley Circuit were some of Tim Lane’s JRC Shutt Ridley team-mates together with the Yomp Bonk Crew; ( teenagers organizing races!). Racing for youths, ladies-only races plus a range of adult races brought events back to a slippy course. Due to a major early crash the E/1/2/3 was turned into a 20-lap mad dash to the finish. Tim Lane finished with the winner being Sean Flynn from Danish team SEG Racing Academy.

Yomp Bonk Crit E/1/2/3, 11 August:

Tim Lane rode of the second Yomp Bonk event, finishing 11th in the E/1/2/3 which was won by Irish rider Cavan Walker.

Scunthorpe track, 20 August:

Both David and Tim Lane raced on a chilly Friday, with Tim’s best result being 6th in the 10 lap points race and David’s being 6th in the 8 lap scratch.

No Nonsense Circuit Races 3/4 men’s, 21 August:

At what point is it ‘too old’ to ride a crit? Being old enough to be some of the riders’ grandparents David Lane took part in the add-on men’s race for the No Nonsense youth/women’s events held on the Hammerstones circuit in Elland along with Angus Owens. With a massive downpour just before the start making the track slippy Angus and the rest of the lead group promptly lapped David several times. The result? Angus finished 8th, David finished.

Bole Hill RR 2/3/4, 22 August:

On the hilly Bole Hill course Tim Lane finished 29th, but not placed due to an administrative error. With an early break stretching the field this made interesting, if challenging, racing for the 80+ starters.

Scunthorpe track, 27 August:

Just David Lane for this one, with both the A (fast) and B (slow) groups combined and visiting overseas riders his best result were 9th in the Block Handicap and 10 lap Points races.

National Junior TT, 11 September:

Held about as far south as it’s possible to go in the UK, that being near Bournemouth, the very lumpy course attracted mostly southern-based riders with Tim Lane the only one travelling from Yorkshire. Finishing 15th in a time of 24:52 (330w average) he used a road bike with aero clip-ons in an event that was as much about the machine choice as the rider due to a 2-mile climb at the start with very tight turns throughout.

Tim’s other results were DNF’s unfortunately; Tameside 2/3/4 on 31 July (caught behind a major crash), Seacroft 2/3/4 on 8 August (puncture), Cold Dark North 2/3/4 on 4 Sept (Covid jab), FTR Classic on 12 Sept (injury) where Angus Owens came 10th.

West Riding Track League, 9 August:

The final grasstrack league event for 2021 both David and Tim Lane took part. Tim won the Unknown Distance, was 2nd in the Elimination and 5th in the Sprint final. David got 7th in the Unknown Distance and finally some league points.

Scunthorpe track race, Quibell Park, 17 September:

David and Tim Lane were in the late-season combined A & B group track racing evening at Scunthorpe, finishing this week for 2022. With riders turning up in search of points to stay in their category or gain an upgrade it was a fast evening. Tim Lane got a 3rd/4th (Points), 5th (Scratch) and 8th (Handicap) with David getting 10th in a couple of those. Racing under floodlights meant a need to combine the groups but more races available. For anyone who’s interested for next year details are here: https://www.facebook.com/scunnytrackleague

Cat & Fiddle hillclimb, Macclesfield, 18 September:

The hillclimb season has started, with competitors trying to gain results which will give entry into the national event on 29th October up Winnat’s Pass. Tim Lane decided that £8 to enter a 6-mile hillclimb was good value, Winning the Junior category in a time of 22:32.

Tim is doing the National Hill Climb at Winnat’s Pass and is then travelling to Ireland for the National Junior TT on 28th September and National Junior Road Race on 1st October.

Scunthorpe track racing, Quibell Park, Friday 16th July:

Tim Lane (Group A) and David Lane (not in group A)
took part in another warm evening at Quibell Park’s large outdoor velodrome. Over four races, with combined unknown distance handicap pursuit plus long scratch, Tim got two 5th places in the Scratch and Long Scratch, with David’s best place being 7th in the Scratch.

Yorkshire Road Club 25 mile TT, Saturday 17th July:

A very hot and sunny day met those taking part in the re-scheduled Club 25 incorporated into the YRC25 on the A168 Walshford. This was about who rode best in hot weather – and for the Thorpers this was David Taylor (2nd vet on Standard and 10th overall with 1:02:17) plus Frank Healey (12th in 1:02:29). First time TT : an update from Marjorie Davision! - nice one.

On Sunday the 18th of July, I took part in my first TT. The Otley CC 10mile TT on the V212 course near Knaresborough.
The organisers where very welcoming and answered some questions I had before the event. On the day I was warmly welcomed by everyone. My anxiety was of the charts as this was my third ride ever (the first two being my two outings with the Ladies Section on Saturday (Craggies and Birkin).
It was hot hot hot, and there was a head/cross wind on the whole course which made the bike wobble at times. I was riding my lockdown second hand road bike which luckily had recently been given a well deserved service.
I was the second rider to set off. I was hoping for anything in the region of 35-40min and anything close to or under 35min would have been fab…I gave it my utmost best in the heat and wind. My official time was 32’22”! I could not believe it! Made a few friends too. The Otley CC guys and other TTist getting ready around me with their fast TT bikes and skinsuits were also really nice when they saw me looking like the stress newbie I am!

I got the TT bug! I am booked for our club’s TT on the 8th. I will also be baking for the refreshments on that day.

TIM and DAVE LANE

Geared-Up 3/4, Doncaster – 30 May

Racing in the cat 3/4 was dominated by crashes; mostly at the hairpin. Inexperience, lack of practice and a desire to do well within a very large field of 60 riders resulted in 5 crashes. A group of 10 got away due to the first major crash, resulting in luck possibly more than ability getting the points. Tim Lane was behind the first big crash, and a couple of others, rolling in with the rest of the field.

Scunthorpe; track racing – 4 June

After being called off post-warmup on 28 May due to a downpour track racing finally got started on the 4th of June for the first time in 18 months. With Group A (Tim Lane) and B (David Lane) racing together Tim got a 2nd (points), 3rd (scratch) and 5th (long scratch) with David … erm … finishing not last! Having the A-group of Elite/1st/2nd cats plus fast Juniors racing with the slower 3 B-group of 3rd/4th cats meant fast at the front and a long, slow tail.

Leeds; grasstrack racing – 14 June

Roundhay grasstrack racing returned with Tim and David Lane taking part. Results TBC but Tim got a 4th in the scratch at the start.

Tim raced May 22nd at the British Cycling North-East test event in Middlesbrough and at Tameside on 1st June, both in the 2/3/4, but suffered a mechanical at Middlesbrough with a used tub de-laminating whilst on a break and illness at Tameside.

Leeds 3/4, Saturday 19 June

Tim Lane and Angus Owens raced in the 3/4 at the Bodington Circuit in a large field. Angus finished 14th, Tim 33rd after a late attack didn’t come off.

Tameside 2/3/4, Tuesday 22 June

Just Tim Lane for this one, with Angus watching his Geared-Up team-mates plus local Sowerby CRT rider Rich Walker. Some pack surging left Tim chasing in a race where several riders came down. Tim came 23rd in the end.

Leeds 3/4, Friday 25 June

Tim Lane raced in the 3/4, finishing in the pack.

Junior CiCLE Classic, Sunday 27 June - part of the National Series

The return of ‘full’ racing saw 140 riders down narrow roads and tracks. With a large number of Juniors this was always going to be difficult, with a big crash after 200m in the parade route! Tim Lane was held up in a full pack crash at 8 miles, chasing back on and then crashed himself at 30mph downhill on gravel through a hawthorn hedge! leading to a premature end. This was a difficult race with many mechanicals: Tim’s spare BeOne bike was lent to the to an Isle of Man rider who then finished 3rd!

YCF Cragg Vale Hillclimb, Tuesday 29 June:

On a slightly shortened course two Thorpers rode YCF’s early hillclimb; Tim Lane came 6th in 14:35 with Paul Brearley 23rd in 17:56. The winner was Adam Duggleby who covered the 4 mile course in 12:14. The ‘best’ kit created some debate the day before on the UK Hillclimbing Facebook group, with few ‘agreed’ conclusions. For reference Tim went with John Metcalfe’s old PlanetX Nanolight, which is now a 5.4kg climbing bike, with Paul instead taking the full TT rig route,
which would be heavy for that course

Chevin Classic GP, Otley, Wednesday 30 June:

Tim Lane raced in the men’s 2/3/4 race, with 120 competitors, staying with the fast boys for half of the race and then first to finish from his group behind.

Scunthorpe velodrome, Friday 2 July:

With Friday being dry David (group B) and Tim (group A) raced track at Scunthorpe. Tim’s best results were a win in the Points and 4th/5th in the Elimination, getting him closer to a Cat 2 licence. David came 4th in the Scratch and 5th/6th in the Elimination, getting some BC points on the board in the process.

2. MAX BURT

Max did his first Road Race of the season, the East Lancs RR yesterday on the Norland circuit. Went out the back 3 laps to go but finished the full distance, this was a great achievement! as many experienced riders dropped out.

Dave Taylor managed 57:11 which is outstanding for his age category not a pb but a cracking ride and a pb for last three seasons
Frank Healy put in a quick respectable time too at 58:50

Tim and Dave Lane
Race report – West Riding Grasstrack League, Monday 10 May

With TT’s being cancelled due to weather, grasstrack racing in Leeds somehow survived the deluges. Using a flatter version of the historic Roundhay track David and Tim Lane engaged with the ‘prologue’ week to sort out the U14/U16/Junior/Adult groups.

Tim Lane was in the ‘top’ group as a Cat 3, David Lane in the ‘middle’ group and both learnt having too much air pressure means you sink in the mud! Air duly let out and Tim got 2nd in the Scratch, 4th in the Devil despite a last-lap mechanical and 4th in the unknown distance. David got about 10th in the unknown distance. Lessons learnt by both – particularly to work out when races were supposed to start!

Racing continues most Monday evenings with further information at: https://westridingtrackleague.com/

Yorkshire ‘test’ Road Race, Sunday 16th May

Road racing was back to Yorkshire after covid restrictions - Tim Lane rode in horrendous conditions in the 45mile 2/3/4 race using the hilly Hade Edge course. Two hours of hail and rain met riders with more than half bailing. This was Tim’s first experience of adult road racing and, despite being pushed into a course car early on, kept going to the finish. He’s grateful for the Thorpers who braved the weather to watch and provide encouragement (including Club President Phil Rounding) in the men’s morning and women’s afternoon races.

Darley Moor Circuit Racing Sat 8th May:

Angus Owens raced as a Cat 4 at Darley Moor and came third! He was 2nd in a breakaway and he also won a bunch sprint. This was a great result for Angus especially as he’s new to racing and we had heavy rain and strong winds on Saturday. (most of the TT’s were cancelled)

Rossington Wheelers 25 mile TT, Saturday 1st May:

Four Thorpers rode alongside young GB 18-23 year-olds, Connor Swift (Team Arkea-Samsic) was on his home roads plus a host of other riders. The
fastest Thorper was David Taylor (59:55) on rough roads, which caused at least one DNF with a double puncture. Tim Lane (1:02:48), Paul Brierley (1:04:47) and David Lane (1:08:14) also got round safely.

Connor Swift broke the course record with 48:24, with 2nd place George Peden (49:58) being only the second and third riders ever to go under 50 minutes on the course. David Taylor also took the fastest Over 65 prize and Tim Lane the fastest Junior prize, winning £20 each.

Team Sheffield 10m TT – Saturday 24 April:

On a warm and very busy A60 Tim Lane (23:48 – new PB) and David Lane (27:00) rode the Team Sheffield 10 at Cuckney. The course is one of the older, more traditional spoco (lumpy) TT courses with a several large junctions and a busy roundabout turn. A draw for the fastest finisher with 20:34 between Bevan Jones & Neal Parkin sharing the honours. Six riders were DQ’d, mainly for turning in sight of the start line despite warnings being given.

Manchester Bicycle Club (Bioracer) 10 mile TT – 5 April 2021
A freezing, snowing Bank Holiday Monday awaited riders, with a very cold crosswind. Sensible ones went clothed appropriately; a short-sleeved skinsuit and no gloves was a bad idea as one rider found out. Tim Lane rode this spoco (ie lumpy) course, finishing in 26:38

Vive le Velo 10 mile TT – 11 April
Another cold morning on a new course with a steep, slippery downhill start. Doing a loop out/back around Market Weighton’s ring road Paul Brierley finished in 26:43 and David Lane in 27:52

East Bradford 10/25 mile TT – 11 April
Running a dual event aimed at younger riders there was an excellent turn-out of under 15’s, many riding their first TT. With a strong tailwind out some riders were caught out by the headwind back. A lesson for TT riders: the finish line might be beyond the start as a several riders realised too late! Tim Lane came 7th with a 24:46.

Drighlington CC hillclimb, Sat 17th Oct and the
VTTA National 25mile Time Trial Championships Sun 18th

Tim Lane and Paul Brierley rode the Drighlington hillclimb on a cool but dry Saturday up Stocksman Lane to Morley. With an equal mix of Drighlington club members and outside entrants there was a decent number of first-timers ‘enjoying’ the hillclimbing experience. Tim finished 4th overall in 3:39.6 and 1st Junior with Paul Brierley 16th in 4:36.7. The winner was Mark Jagger of Team Lifting Gear in 3:16.9.

David Taylor's last race for 2020 was the Veterans' National 25 mile championship. This was a popular event this year for the fast national level riders- postponed from two weeks earlier due to the heavy rain - so that turned out to be a great decision for the event.
On a chilly day David managed his fastest 25 mile TT for the last 3 seasons recording 58:56 and adjusting for age this gives a "plus" of 12:46, meaning David was almost 13mins faster than a typical racer of his age .The winner on standard had a massive plus of over 20 min this was 90 year old legend Ron Hallam with an actual time of 1:11:42. The overall winner on actual time was Keith Ainsworth with a time of 50:20, Keith is about 60yrs old so this is very impressive too, especially as he was competing with younger riders in the 40yrs age range

Track is Back!
Race report – Manchester Regional Track League, Friday 9th October:
Manchester track league re-started on Friday with slightly smaller numbers and zoned riders depending upon their race group. David and Tim Lane (groups 1 and 3) raced with both, gaining some sprint points. The lack of track practice was evident - bumpy groups riding along with those who’ve had the summer to hone their fitness and riding strongly.
ACT Track League also re-starts on Monday with the adults / youths merged into three groups.

On the final Thursday the sun finally shone, albeit on a cold evening.
Tim Lane was in group A (fast) with David Lane in group C . Some feisty racing in the three group A races with big names struggling at times although Tim didn’t get a podium.

David’s evening started badly with a cracked rear wheel hub and an early exit to be safe in the Elimination. On a borrowed wheel an ambitious break in the Points led to the win (4th/1st/1st) plus 3rd place in the Scratch race.

a much needed "float day" on the 25mile course in the Thirsk/Topcliffe area. All Thorpers did well! David Taylor put in a sub 1 hr ,once again showing that age (65) is no barrier to going quickly on a bike

Cycling Time Trials: Croft 10 mile TT Series (Come and try it events)(All welcome)(3 of 4)

Race report – Croft open 10 TT, Weds. 19th August 2020

The second motor circuit in 4 days and again a wet ride, this time at Croft, for David and Tim Lane in Croft’s open 10 mile TT series.

This TT is every Wednesday evening, sign-on from 5.15pm with racing starting from 6.15pm. Almost 170 took part on a wide and twisty circuit with the youngest aged 9 and the oldest 80. Riders complete 5 laps of the circuit. (Not 4, as three did and their time didn’t count!)

First time here for both David and Tim - finding a line around others was sometimes challenging.
Tim finished with a 10TT pb of 23:41 and David with 26:07. Best time for the night was Joe Wilson from Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling with a 20:22.

Registration for next Wednesday’s is here: https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/race-details/21217 although riders can also register on the day and anyone is welcome to have a try.

Please note Sunday’s Cragg Vale hillclimb has been cancelled.

Thurs 13th August

There wasn’t a race report from Thursday’s track racing at Newcastle-under-Lyme as David and Tim only covered one race each before a rainstorm stopped play. No podium finish for Tim having moved into the A (fast) group or David in the C ("slow and old" lol) group.

Race Rapid (Mallory Park) 10 mile TT

Sunday 16th August
Mallory Park on a cold and damp August day was the setting of this weekend’s 10 mile TT. More autumnal than mid-summer! The circuit’s an oval shape around a fishing lake with riders completing an introductory downhill spring plus 10 laps. With a tailwind on the downhill leg and a headwind with showers on the uphill ,the fishermen must’ve wondered who was the craziest to be out in the rain!
Tim was out first on his Argon with new (working) rear brakes, finishing in 24:17 and David followed with a 26:34. This was their first visit. Not having traffic was great; but most riders actually completed a bit over the 10 mile distance because they often had to pass several others to the left. Overall though it was worth the trip.
Best time of the day was a 19:32 from George Mills-Keeling of Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling. There was also an impressive tandem duo of David Ellis and Luke Pollard who came in at 19:47. Generally though, times were about 30-60 seconds slower than the previous week with the rain leaving puddles across parts of the circuit.

Tickhill Velo 10 mile TT, 8th August 2020, O10/1 course at Hatfield Woodhouse

This club 10 was popular because there is no circuit/road racing and the TT season has only just resumed. There was a full field of 120 riders plus reserves, it was a warm day with crosswind for The A614 has deteriorated in recent years with complaints about the rough surface from many riders. David and Tim Lane rode with David finishing in 26:38 . Unfortunately Tim had a repeat of his brake-jamming mechanical at 3 miles – despite spending the week re-building them, the TRP TT brakes refused to work properly. Stopping to re-set the brakes didn’t help and he finished in 30:08, but well from last. A new set of TRP brakes is on the way

Several top level UK riders participated in this TT including Connor Swift and Adam Duggleby both putting in astonishing times of 19.09 and 19.33 respectively (19.09 surely a course record?)

Next week’s TT is on Sunday 16th at Mallory Park race circuit and there’ll be a race to get Tim’s TT bike ready for then.
