It was supposed to get easier but the mud makes it super slow going! The trampers huts are great - some more modern than others, some more mouse infested than others, but a roof over your head is wonderful after a challenging day! Some days there’s even time for group yoga!

Fabulous landscapes and some hut interiors. These huts are first come, first served but there is always the floor….At one hut that had 6 bunks, we managed to squeeze 13 people in!

We are now two thirds into the trail!
2000km!

South Island is more remote so signal is intermittent but the views are stunning!

The start of the South Island…beautiful Queen Charlotte Track. Our view from the safety of a cabin during the cyclone. Our new very much lighter weight tent and backpack (SO worth it!)
Now we head into the mountains…11 days of food to carry…backpack feels heavy again!

Welcome to Wellington!
The end of the North Island complete!
A bit of a rest, sightseeing, and then the logistical challenge of posting 32 days worth of meals to various destinations in the remote places we are due to get to in The South Island.
Marmite mixed into peanut butter is definitely a thing 😁
Staying safe whilst the cyclone comes through.

1500km - half way point reached!!!

Then straight into the Tararuas where we got our first test of mountain skills - challenging days but rewarding views…sometimes! Occasionally there are just too many fallen trees to get over and my pack doesn’t seem to feel any lighter!

Boots are nearly dry, but I felt as if I had trench foot towards the end 😩

Good lessons for what the South Island may have in store for us!

A switch from the feet to the paddles…5 days canoeing down the Whanganui River. Beautiful, peaceful, and yet actually quite a bit of work (I know it doesn’t look that way!)

Tongariro Crossing, or some of you might know it as “Mount Doom” from Lord of the Rings. Perfect weather for it and worth the 4:30am start, the total of 34km walked and 1500m climb! Breakfast and a cup of tea at Blue Lake restored our energy!

One third done! Yes, we have walked 1000km!This is a lovely country x

Walked through Auckland yesterday- the trail took us through some lovely parks and green spaces- gave me a better appreciation of the city 😁. Couldn’t resist taking a picture of this though…just north of the city is an area called Torbay! (Some of the headland did look very familiar!)

We passed the 500km mark! Someone had left this on the track for us to find 😊
There is some fabulous woodland here (if currently a little muddy in places!)

Stuck!
Not a bad place to be stuck though!
We’ve been here at Whananaki for 7 days…John is recovering from shin splints so massage, exercises, and rest have been the order of the week!
Tomorrow he is determined to carry on…slowly, and with less miles…we’ll see how we get on!

An outward bound day!
The magnificent seven gathered together and slid down muddy banks, wandered through a riverbed, and grouped up to wade across a hip high river - we look like we’ve been eating Ready Brek! A tough and slippery climb out of the gorge but it was worth it. I think I fell less than 10 times, but I did keep up with the 23 year olds (almost!)
Slept well after that!

Crossing from east to west…little bit like England until the tropical rain starts for 10 minutes, then it’s back to sunny again. Group stretching ready for the day ahead is non negotiable!

Three days on the beach….that’s not quite what it sounds like. Three full days hiking 63miles with only certain places where it’s permitted to camp. This is the passage of fire!
We made it!
10 points to anyone who knows what this cute bird is and 20 points for the jellyfish 😁
