The calm before the dusty storm! The start line for the Zimbabwe Safari Rally is in Bulawayo (The City of Kings) some people opt to truck their cars to the start line before and then fly into Bulawayo when the rally starts, its amazing the effort everyone puts into having fun time!! Note that these trucks also follow at the back all the way to Victoria Falls along the main road to collect cars that are unable to be fixed.

That’s it team, the last of the 2024 Rally photos. An event made up of a million and one fantastic memories, gone in a flash and a blur. We had an absolute blast, and nothing makes us happier than seeing The Rally come together, and all of you taking such enjoyment from it.

A huge shout out goes to Godfrey and his mechanic crew who work round the clock tirelessly on all sorts of breakdowns and repairs. To Daryl Lees May you were invaluable in getting the Flamingo across the finish line. Huge thanks for all your hard work. The Zimbabwe Safari Rally 2024
Day 4. Part 2 -The Finish line Victoria falls
Date: Saturday 16th March 2024 April
Rally route: Robins camp are to Elephant Hills Resort & Conference Centre, Victoria Falls.
Distance: 120km
Total 200 people
80 Vehicles
3 cars did not finish the 2024 Safari Rally

We rounded off the afternoon with some much-needed serenity, cruising along the Zambezi River, watching one of the supreme African sunsets go down. There was no shortage of good food, great drinks, and hilarious stories reminiscing the whirlwind couple of days that we had all just been consumed in. Before sending everyone back to real life, we wrapped up this legendary adventure with speeches & and obviously more stories) an abundance of an outstanding dinner buffet and then bid farewell to our 2024 The Zimbabwe Safari Rally family with a grand finale party with none other than the legendary DJ Gary Stanley playing well into the early hours of the morning.

Sunday was decompression day, head-home day, load-up-your-cars-onto-carriers day, locate the last of the trackers day, and rest-and-recover day. Some participants departed straight home – if you drove... Respect! Others flew and some hung around for one more day to chill, socialize, and enjoy all that Victoria Falls has to offer. All in all, it was a massive success, and man are we excited to do it all again in 2025!

We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone for their incredible positivity when things got tough, their constant hunger for the adventure, and their unwavering support for each other - this is what makes The Zimbabwe Safari Rally such an inclusive & wholesome environment where every one is welcome. We appreciate you, and we cannot wait to see you next year. Completing The Zimbabwe Safari Rally is no small feat, it’s a challenge of great proportion and we are so proud of you all for handling it with such gusto and confidence. We hope that the friendships and memories made along the way, second to no other, will stay with you for a lifetime.

Day 4. Part.1: The Finish line - Victoria Falls
Date: Saturday 16th March 2024
Rally route: Robins camp area to Elephant Hills Resort , Victoria Falls.
Distance: 120km

The shortest day of driving began with a more leisurely start, a good breakfast, and a much needed strong cup of coffee. With only 120km left on the clock, we departed around 10am, headed out the park via the Robin’s gate, and traveled along the Pandamatenga road for about 3 hours (the best dirt road of the whole trip). The 4WD and 2WD route-takers split up again for a portion of the drive, before reconnecting all together on the Victoria Falls main road… although some 2WD cars thought they could handle the rougher route - baaaad idea. From the main road it’s home straight to Elephant Hills Resort ; snap a pic entering Victoria Falls along the way, check in, and gather your faculties.
By 3pm, everyone had made it to the end destination safe and sound. The Zimbabwe Safari Rally 2024 welcome to Victoria Falls. Thankfully, we had ended it off with no more breakdowns!

Day 3. Part 4: The THEME DAY
Date: Friday 15th March 2024
Rally route: Hwange Main Camp area to Robins camp area.
Distance: 150km

After a fun and refreshing break from the dirt road, we hopped back into our cars, and the masses slowly began peeling off towards their respective camps in the Robins area. The Robins camp swimming pool was a buzzing hive of activity with everyone enjoying a swim and a sundowner. A delicious dinner was had and of course, the party got going in full swing in the Laughing Hyena Bar. Renowned for capturing many a participant every year this was to be regretted the following morning. Thank you to the team at Robins Camp for taking such good care of a large chunk of our group and to all the other lodges involved on this night, thank you. We’ve shared you the rave reviews from all the guests. Thanks to the team that picked up team Thing Thing and Things kit bag that had somehow fallen off their Mini Moke on the Nantwich Road.

Day 3. Part 3: The THEME DAY

Date: Friday 15th March 2024
Rally route: Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe Hwange Main Camp area to Robins Camp area.
Distance: 150km

Much to everyone’s surprise, a "road block" popped up a few hours into the journey … bringing all operations to a halt at Masuma Pan. Team SHIKA SHIKA had gone all out & set up an entire roadblock as a fundraiser for National Parks Main Camp staff . The troops piled in, stretched their legs, cooled off with water guns, and paid their fines donations for various punishable vehicle offenses along with whatever else was deemed a finance offense! It was an incredible effort SHIKA SHIKA, you exceeded expectations, and became a highlight of the day. The day was peppered with further breaking. Flamingoes topping the list yet again with their car limping along on a mopane wood temporary suspension, as they discovered very quickly the car wasn’t designed to fly over bridges! Team indestructible old fools completely missed their camp altogether! The days were hot hot hot and long but a lot of fun was had by all through the park!

Day 3. Part 2: The THEME DAY
Date: Friday 15th March
Rally route: Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe Main Camp area to Robins Camp area.
Distance: 150km

The "dream team" of our mechanics were tasked to the brim as soon as the day begun, cars and people alike were already exhausted - Bernie was up at 5.30am, ready for the cars to start passing through the boom at Main Camp. Entertainment was provided to 120 junior school children who were on a school camp at Hwange Main Camp and they waved and cheered on each team through the boom with lots of laughing smiles and shouting, well done kiddies !!!! Exceptional game viewing kick started the day, a pack of 16 wild dogs ,3 male lions, 2 hyena trot up and down the road, a big herd of over 800 buffalo, Ele and giraffe all seen before 6am! Today the teams were taking it much easier, departure was leisurely, and plenty of pitstops, socials, and time-outs in the sunshine were made. A few painkillers may have also been needed here and there, to tolerate the corrugation-induced headaches. Nevertheless, it was refreshing to be in the park, and see more of our incredible country and its game, and for a lucky few, even encounter some painted dogs.

Day 3. Part 1: The THEME DAY
Date: Friday 15th March 2024
Rally route: Hwange Main Camp area to Robins Camp area.
Distance: 150km

All a little bit tired, but full of excitement, we were off just as soon as we had come in. Humour was inbound because THEME DAY was upon us, and what a lot of humour this was. Fantastic outfits, themes, and accessories set the tone for the day!
There was plenty of time to enjoy all the outfits because today, everyone was driving the same 150km route through our beautiful Hwange National Park… albeit on a dusty and bouncy road, but where’s the fun in smooth sailing.
Each team (and most cars) dressed up to their creatively chosen themes, and National Parks had an absolute blast alongside us as we checked each car slowly filter through the Main camp boom into the park. A massive thank you to the Zimparks Hwange National parks team for being so helpful and accommodating in the coordination of this event, we could not have done it without all their efforts to make it as well-run as possible.

Day 2: part.4.
Date: Thursday 14th March 2024
Rally route: Bulawayo to Hwange National Park.
Distance: 350km

It may have only been the first day of driving, but quite a few teams had already suffered some losses. Never fear though, because if the mechanics couldn’t save you yet, another team would be right there happy to help, either to tow you or to ditch the dead-weight car and add you to their tally of passengers. A massive shoutout to our marvelous group of ralliers for always looking out for each other.
And a huge thank you to:
Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe and Hwange Safari Lodge , for taking care of everyone - nothing beats a good meal and heavy sleep after a long and tough day. Definitely one of the best day 2’s we’ve had in terms of fewer breakdowns than in previous years so a big shout out to everyone for getting their cars into better shape this year! By the end of day 2, Trolls were out, TheCarScene Renault Megane had a completely oil free sump due to Dubz not knowing the brutality of the Zim potholes! Sorry Dubz we beat SA hands down in this department! It must be mentioned that team The Rover-ettes towed the Megane in to Hwange Safari Lodge with their Landrover!!!!! Lastly the Watafool Landrover was ditched. A good day all in all ….. everyone safe and sound. Day 3 was going to be interesting…

Distance: 350km

A lot of work goes into map plotting and our routes prior to the event taking place. However many participants seem to do their own thing and wonder why they get lost or miss the clearly marked turn offs and camps! Team Trolls sadly lost their Jeep very early on in the day and she spent the rest of her trip on the back of a car carrier. Team Watafool spent many hours on their red Landrover eventually calling in their trusty red Datsun 120y all the way from Chegutu as a replacement! Good call!!!! Said red Landrover is still parked at Hwange Safari Lodge. Team Rixi Taxi definitely had heartburn from petrol purchased at Lupane and she coughed and spluttered but soldiered on!! Team Mustafa the Merc arrived early at Hwange Safari Lodge along with Africa Rally to enjoy the pool and a cocktail! With many and rally cars wondering all over the show everyone regrouped (and rehydrated of course) and filtered into Hwange Safari Lodge and Hwange Main Camp. All in all, the journey ended up averaging around a 5-6 hour trip.

Distance: 350km

The 2 Wheel drivers were off within an hour or two later, because, with a slightly gentler route, they had more time… or so they thought. As you’ll see the Flocking Fantastic Flamingo’s feature quite prominently throughout our photo bursts generally more stationary than mobile!!!! Breakdown after breakdown for them. Breakdowns began just after leaving Bulawayo, and multiple more followed throughout the day. Some took the gentler back roads and joined the 4WDs halfway along their route to Lupane. Others took the cheese and wine route – the ‘easy main road’ which turned out to be plenty more challenging than they expected – but peppering the journey with cheeseboard pit stops atop a bonnet definitely helps to ease the troubles and procrastinate tackling the potholes.

Day 2: part.1. The day of driving, and breaking down, and more driving.
Date: Thursday 14th March 2024
Rally route: Bulawayo to Hwange National Park.
Distance: 350km

Up bright and early for a group recon at the Zonkizizwe shopping center in Bulawayo, a lot of the 4-wheel drivers were en route by 7am – fully caffeinated and with well-stocked cooler boxers. Problematic car antics had already begun, but it’s safe to say 100% of the vehicles managed to leave Bulawayo. Some going better than others but all off the starting blocks! Today’s journey, the longest of them all, entailed a 350km drive along some beautiful, rough, and lesser travelled back roads. The 4WD cars ventured off the beaten track towards Hwange National Park enjoying most of their day travelling through the park, whilst the 2WD cars enjoyed a more leisurely route with many cheese and wine stops had along the way!

Day 1. part 4: The calm before the Dust Storm
Date Wed 13 March 2024

Over the next few days, we will be posting all the photos of the Zimbabwe Safari Rally 2024.

Shortly after the opening speeches DJ Gary Stanley kept the dancefloor alive and pumping well into the early morning. The party was an absolute blast, our rally members were all becoming well acquainted, and it was a highlight to see everyone dressed to nines for the special occasion… (little did they know that was the cleanest and most relaxed they would be for the next few days.)
It was a 10/10 way to welcome everyone to the scene, get them rearing to go, and begin our adventure together!

The Zimbabwe Safari Rally 2024’s last batch of medieval themed evening photos! Enjoy the last of everyone looking fresh and clean, bring on the 600km, 3 days of off-road rally fun!
