As the Backroads of Appalachia team revs up their engines and hits the winding roads of their beloved region, they know that their mission is clear: to promote Motorsport tourism and encourage visitors to explore all that Central Appalachia has to offer.

To achieve this goal, the team takes their message to the places where motorcycle enthusiasts gather. From local rallies to major events like Daytona Bike Week, they set up booths, hand out flyers, and talk to people one-on-one, sharing their passion for the region and encouraging visitors to support local businesses.

But attending these events isn't without its challenges. The cost of lodging, transportation, and other expenses can take a toll on the team's finances, and they rely on the support of the counties and cities they represent to make these trips possible.

Despite these obstacles, our team remains committed to their cause. They know that promoting Central Appalachia is worth the effort, as it can bring in much-needed tourism dollars and support local communities. Plus, we truly believe that the region is a hidden gem, with stunning natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and exciting outdoor activities that are just waiting to be discovered.

So the next time you see the Backroads of Appalachia team at a motorcycle event, be sure to stop by and say hello. You might just discover your next great travel destination – and help support a worthy cause in the process. And if you're a resident of the counties we represent, consider giving them a call and showing your support for funding our endeavors. After all, it takes a village to promote a region, and the Backroads of Appalachia team is grateful for all the help they can get.

Located on The Chain, Chain Rock is a unique point of interest that sits within Pine Mountain State Resort Park. From the parking lot at the top of Pine Mountain, it is a short hike to the Chain Rock overlook. There, legend has it, the chain was put between two large boulders to keep them from falling onto the town of Pineville.

Located on Black Diamond Targa, The Cumberland Shadow Trail is a five-mile-long multi-purpose trail along the backside of the lake. The trailheads are located above the second bridge over the lake and below the dam. The trail is available for use year-round and features excellent views of the lake. The trail winds its way along the ridges and through the valleys of Martins Fork. There are two primitive campsites along the trail for backpackers. During the fall, hunters also use the area along the trail, so please use caution.

Hensley Settlement is a mountaintop settlement established in 1904 and occupied until 1951. The settlement never modernized and now stands as a living history museum within the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Visitors can explore the grounds including structures like the blacksmith’s shop, the spring house, and the one room schoolhouse. Riders can access the settlement via a wagon road just as generations have done for centuries. While horses are permitted on the trail leading to the settlement, they are not permitted within the settlement. Riders should dismount and leave their horses in the hitching area provided.

After years of being closed to the public, the National Park has began to give guided tours of the famous Gap Cave (also known in the past as Cujo’s Cave). This is one of the most unique attractions in the entire area, and it’s a great activity to check out this time of the year, due to the cave staying nice and cool.

Gap Cave is located just underneath Pinnacle Overlook in the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Lee County, Virginia. Currently, the cave has a surveyed length of 18.5 miles and is the 42nd longest cave in the United States and 154th in the world. There are six known entrances: the Gap Cave Entrance, an artificial entrance, known as the Cudjo's Cave Entrance, the Stream Entrance, the Soldiers Cave Entrance, the Big Saltpeter Cave Entrance, and the Wellhole. All lead into the same cave, Gap Cave.
