The New Year's Eve ball drop is a #NewYork tradition that is known worldwide. It started in 1904, when the #NewYorkTimes offered to host the party in the square in front of its new headquarters.
During the 115 years of this tradition, there have been only two occasions when the ball was not dropped. In 1942 and 1943 the square was not lit so that the #WWII German submarines would not see it.
Currently the #OneTimesSquare building is mostly empty. Don't feel too bad for the owner of the property, they still make over $23 million per year from the billboard advertising.

The London we see today is like a Phoenix rising from the ashes. Up until 1666 Londoners lived in wooden houses with thatched roofs, that were built so close together that neighbours could shake hands through their windows. 🏘 It wasn't the sprawling London we know today, rather it was an overpopulated town that was home to around 100,000 residents who lived in an area of about 1sq mile.
The #GreatFireofLondon started on Pudding lane when a baker did not properly extinguish the fire in his oven. 🔥 It was a windy night, and so the fire quickly spread across the wooden houses, setting the city aflame. #London burned for four days and nights. The city was completely destroyed and left at least 80,000 people homeless.
The fields and farmland that surrounded London were soon occupied, as people started to rebuild the city. No one wanted to live through such a disaster again, and brick was used for all buildings. This gave rise to the emergence of London that we see now.
