Backroads With The Bishop's Since the time we moved to Texas, while Derek was in Seminary we adopted the philosophy of vacationing where we live.

This page will provide information about places that we visit on our travels. Whether that is in our local area or abroad.

It’s been awhile since we posted on here, we’ll try & do better.
Today our adventure took us to Fort Morgan, Colorado. If you find yourself on I-76 between Denver & Nebraska, Fort Morgan is a great little stop. Might I say, one of the only stops. In Spring of 2023 Fort Morgan was featured on HGTV’s Home Town Takeover. Ben & Erin Napier and Dave & Jenny Marrs helped refurbish local parks, businesses and homes of people that make an impact in their community, to help breathe new life into small town America. We were there in the morning and several of the businesses weren’t open yet. We did stop at Zazzy’s for a bagel & coffee. It is just as cute in person as it was on the show. Food & coffee was delicious and the ladies working were very kind & hospitable. It was nice to see a steady stream of customers flowing in. I hope that people will stop and visit Fort Morgan as they pass through. As I hope you will make stops like this throughout the country. There are so many cool places, lovely people & so much history on the backroads.
Until we meet again on the backroads. 🚗

Today we made our way to Buffalo Rock State Park outside of Ottawa for our annual picnic. The fall colors were at their peak, a nice brisk hike, the views along the Illinois River were beautiful, the company was the best & to top it off we had our favorite sushi for our picnic. With that being said, this will probably be my first post not recommending a place. Though the views were beautiful & the trails were great, the nearby gun range was so loud & constant it was very difficult to enjoy the day. At times the gun fire was so loud you could feel it. These feelings were felt by most that we came across on the trails. We did top our day off at August Hill Winery in Peru with one of their snack boxes listening to live music overlooking the Illinois River Valley. We will definitely go back for another day of live music on the hill.
Until we meet again on the backroads.

Backroads with the Bishop’s: Exit 123 off if I-55 you can stop in Lincoln, Illinois to see the World Largest Covered Wagon, which technically is not covered.
Side note: Derek would not participate, he said it had to be at least 12 degrees . . . and it was not. 🥶

Backroads with the Bishop’s:
The backroads took us to Devil’s Lake State Park in Baraboo, Wisconsin for our annual fall hike & picnic. It was a beautiful 70 degree day which is unheard of in November so we took full advantage of it. We hiked the East Bluff Trail which had a cave, beautiful rock formations & views. We would like to go back and do some of the other trails. I would highly recommend this park & trails. I’m sorry for the photo overload, but the views were just so pretty!
We ended our day at our favorite Mexican restaurant in an outdoor igloo at Hacienda Real in Yorkville.
Great Day!
Until we meet again on the backroads.
