This is a day I will never forget in Germany. It was our first full day to spend in Germany along the Rhine. We stayed at a wonderful B&B in Bacharach. After a quick and delicious breakfast we headed to the "edge of town" to the river to catch our K&D river cruise. It was rather cold and windy but we toughed it out on the top deck listening to the tales of Germany past and historic fights that took place along the river. It seemed every curve and bend had a castle and a story. My excitement was building as I imagined the castle we would be visiting that day. We disembarked at Koblenz and jetted into the nearest TI office for maps and train information. Sadly we did not have time to hang around since our river cruise was an hour late arriving. We literally ran across town to the Bahn to catch a train to Mozelkern. After what I think was a 40 minute ride we got off at an empty, unmanned train station with a kiosk! Thank goodness I am rather observant and noticed a red arrow pointing the way to Berg Eltz. A small and quiet town with one restaurant we really wanted to stop for eats but it was already late afternoon and we still had a trail to follow. We came to the end of the road where we crossed a river by wooden bridge and continued into the forested mountain side. We thoroughly enjoyed this mild hike and the sounds of nature. We took pictures and stopped to enjoy the views. Ahhh. We took too much time again. We finally came to the steep cliff side where we had to go up about 124 stairs! But when we got to the top to the castle we were so pumped. What a fantastic castle and tour! It was smaller than I thought and cozy and serene. We were fortunate to make the last tour of the day and so when we finished the cafe was already closed. A little disappointed and hungry we ate snacks from our backpacks. I thought it would be smart to take the shuttle down the mountain (mistake), it dumped us off about half way down the mountain in a lot where the rest of the tourists were getting in there cars and heading out. We were alone. We checked our map, and walked 2.7 kilometers to the nearest town but did not find a Bahn, not even a bus stop. We stood in a quiet neighborhood trying to figure out what to do next. (I wasn't a travel agent then, lol) I began to cry as I imagined us having to walk back to the lot, and back up the mountain to find the cliff steps to find the trail in the dark without flashlights to make our way back to Mozelkern. A kind young German mommy pulled into the drive way to pick up her baby inside the home we were standing in front of. She gave me kleenex and called us a taxi. We were so grateful! It was a while before we made it to Koblenz where we had a very late dinner. We took the train along the Rhine back to Bacharach where we fell into bed! What a day....and I didn't even know I had just visited my most favorite castle in Germany!

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! is booking up but there is still a couple ways for you to go. A river cruise is one way! I know CDC is at it again. Remember Oberammergau actually goes on through summer months and into fall so there is plenty of cruise options still available. River cruises are not like oceanic cruises in scale or passengers. carries up to 160 passengers only and with your floor to ceiling sliding glass doors you can enjoy fresh air and views from your own room. Cruise ships in general have the most safe guards in place in comparison to other modes of travel, implementing , and stringent protocols for keeping the ship clean.

A great way to visit Germany is by Avalon Waterways! And of course they have cruise itineraries that include Oberammergau! Personally, there is nothing better than a river cruise to get a taste of a foreign destination. With Avalon you can choose the type of experience you want to have at each port location. Guided tours are not your only option with Avalon. Sight see your way at your pace with "active" and "discovery" excursion options. And yes, bikes, walking sticks, helmets, kayaks, whatever you may need for your excursion, Avalon provides for you! And there is no need to pre purchase a "drink package", Avalon is all inclusive, so your wine with dinner or beer at lunch, or sodas and tea are not extra. You will enjoy the ever changing views and 5 star hotel accommodations while only having to unpack once! Cruise in relaxed luxury with Avalon!

To upgrade or not? I recommend you save your upgrade investments for the parts of your travel it will make the biggest difference. Here are a few things to consider:

Flights: Back in the day, I actually curled up in front of my seat and slept on the floor on a red eye!!! Sigh...no more. And I wouldn't want you to do that on your vacation! Consider how long will you be in the air? Upgrading to first or business class has greater benefits on a long-haul flight than a short hop. The extra legroom with a premium economy seat can make a tremendous difference on a long flight.

Ground transportation: How tired might you feel after your flight? And how easy is public transport at your destination? Stepping off a long-haul flight into a hot and unfamiliar country, then into the extra comfort and convenience of a private car that whisks you straight to your air-conditioned hotel can be priceless! Yeeessss! That's what I'm talking about!

Accommodation: Luxury doesn’t necessarily mean five-star resort. Luxury could mean an ocean-view room, or daily breakfast in bed. I spent 10 days in Ireland at some wonderful B&B's and had the best breakfasts and conversations with people in the know.

Activities: Experiences are such a big part of true luxury in travel. When a hotel room or flight is long forgotten, experiences stay with you for years to come! I can book a cookery class with a local family, arrange a sunset meal on the beach, or plan a guided tour of favorite local spots. Did you know Germany has a tour on bike through the countryside visiting breweries! You can also tour Munich laying in a bed pulled by a tour guide on a bike! Unique experiences are definitely worth an upgrade.

I went to Germany excited to castle jump and expected my dream castle visit to Neuschwanstein to be my favorite, but I was wrong. Eltz Castle blew me away. It is my absolute favorite castle. It does not feel like a museum inside, it is very homey. I could totally live there! There are two ways to get there; by car of course or by train and hike. We took the train from Koblenz to Mozelkern. Mozelkern is such a small town, with one restaurant! From the end of the road you begin the hike along the Eltz rive no less. Winding trails, up and down yet not rigorous take you to the side of the castle where you will have to take 124 steps (if I remember correctly) up the cliff wall. It was an amazing day. It was our first full day in Germany, and this day sparked the fire that became my passion for travel. I want everyone to visit Germany, to feel confident navigating unknown paths in foreign locations! I absolutely find joy in planning customized itineraries for people to experience new destinations.

Talk about choice real estate—the Eltz Castle in Wierschem, Germany, is a spectacular medieval structure that sits within a valley, surrounded by serene fore...

Just a little "taste" of Germany! Did you know Germany has islands? Yes they do, in northern section and the beaches have white sand. Germans love their bread and they have over 300 recipes not including pretzels! If you have Alexa, ask her for a recipe! What else do Germans love? Sausage! In fact, they have over 5000 different kinds! That's bc most towns and villages have their own recipe. And if you visit Germany you must try them but don't ask for them after noon. Sausage is supposed to be eaten at breakfast. That said, I've been and there are a few touristy areas that you can buy sausage after noon. What about beer? Yes, they love that too! And there are over 5000 brews also because many towns have their own blend. Facts! When you obtain my services for a German vacation be sure to let me know you want to go on a culinary tour! There are many including the fun "13 Breweries Trail"!

I can tell you without a doubt Germany has some really delicious food! I never had a bad meal wherever I went for two weeks! I traveled from Frankfurt to Bacharach on the Rhine River to Baden Baden by the Black Forest to Fussen in Bavaria and to Munich before departing. Ahhh. Good food, good times.
