PASSENGERS' RIGHTS AND AIRLINES' RESPONSIBILITIES AFTER MAJOR AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL FLIGHT DISRUPTION

AIRLINES are working round the clock to resolve the problems caused by yesterday's flight disruption. And the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is now informing travellers of their rights when facing delays.Rob Bishton, Joint-Interim Chief Executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said: “We know there are many passengers overseas that are impacted by flight delays and cancellations which can be frustrating when wanting to get home after a trip abroad.
“The scale of the disruption has meant passengers have faced longer delays and in some cases are waiting several days for alternative flights, but airlines are working around the clock, putting on extra capacity to resolve the issue.
“If you are still waiting to come home, airlines have a responsibility to look after you while you wait. This means providing you with meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation. If airlines cannot do this, you can organise your own meals and accommodation then claim costs back.
“We are engaging with airlines and know that more flights are being provided, but in circumstances where this has not been possible due to the volume of passengers, consumers can book their own alternative air travel and claim the cost back from their airline.
“If you end up paying for things yourself or booking your own replacement flight or hotel, keep every receipt and make sure your claim is not excessive.
“Clear and accurate communication is important during times of disruption, and we are working closely with airlines to rectify any instances of wrong information being provided to passengers.”

EIGHT OUT OF TEN PASS THROUGH SECURITY AT DUBLIN AIRPORT IN UNDER 10 MINUTES

Passengers departing from Dublin Airport in June enjoyed an ultra-efficient experience at security screening with 78% of the 1.6 million departing passengers passing through in under 10 minutes and 98% going through in less than 20 minutes

The number of passengers through Dublin Airport in the opening six months of the year was just over 15.5 million, which is on a par with 2019 levels.

The busy peak summer season is well underway now at Dublin and Cork airports, with a total of 3.5 million passengers flying in and out of the State's two busiest airports in June, according to daa, the operator of both airports.

June was the busiest month of the year so far at Dublin Airport with just over 3.2 million passengers, in line with June 2019 levels and 14% higher than the same month last year. Included in this figure is the 200,000 passengers who transited and transferred through Dublin Airport in June. Around 1.95 million passengers (61%) passed through Terminal 1 during June, with 1.25 million going through Terminal 2.

The number of passengers through Cork Airport in the opening six months of the year was 1,292,000 million, up 7% on the same period in 2019. Cork Airport is forecast to have its busiest year in its history in terms of international passengers with 2.7 million set to fly in and out of the Munster’s most popular airport in 2023.

According to daa CEO Kenny Jacobs: "The busy summer period is well underway, with over 100,000 passengers travelling through Dublin Airport every single day at the moment. Our busiest day of the year so far was Friday, June 30 -. Families wasted little time in getting their bags packed and their feet on the beaches of Europe and beyond, with almost 116,000 passengers passing through the airport that same day as schools all over the country broke for their summer holidays. Passengers will be hoping their cocktails will be as smooth as their journey through Dublin Airport, with 98% of passengers passing through security screening in under 20 minutes in June, which is well above our stated target of 90%."

Kenny Jacobs added: “Almost 1.3 million passengers have flown in and out of Cork Airport in the first six months of the year. Cork Airport is gearing up to have its busiest year ever for international traffic, with 2.7 million passengers expected to fly to and from Munster’s busiest and most popular airport this year. This growth is facilitated by an excellent airport experience, friendly staff and a wide choice of routes. I expect that growth to continue through winter, with Aer Lingus recently announcing new winter services to Lyon and Tenerife, along with frequency increases on service to Lanzarote. There will be more good news for passengers across the South of Ireland soon as the team at Cork Airport work with our airline customers to finalise details of even more new routes.”

Carbon Per Passenger in June
daa continues to work in partnership with airlines and the aviation eco system to reduce the environmental impact of operations at its airports. In June, carbon emissions per passenger equated to 0.57kg at Dublin Airport, similar to the same month in 2022, despite the increase in traffic.

Passenger Advice For Summer
Passengers travelling out of Dublin Airport over the coming weeks and months are advised to be in their terminal two hours before a short-haul flight and three hours before a long-haul departure. Passengers travelling from Cork Airport are advised to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before their flight is due to depart. Those looking to park at either airport are well advised to book in advance. If the dates required are not available it is advised to plan to travel via an alternate mode such as by bus, by taxi or by getting dropped off.

A MILLION TRAVELLERS SET TO FLY FROM DUBLIN AIRPORT AS SCHOOLS BREAK FOR THE SUMMER

MORE than one million passengers will pass through Dublin Airport over the next 10 days as schools break for summer and thousands of families depart for their annual sun holiday and summer trips overseas.

Dublin Airport is reminding passengers due to fly over the coming period to be in their terminal two hours before a short-haul flight and three hours prior to a long-haul departure.

The busy summer season is well underway at Dublin Airport, with over 100,000 passengers arriving and departing each day during June and early July. Over 120,000 passengers will travel through the airport today (Sunday, June 25).

According to Graeme McQueen, Media Relations Manager at daa, the operator of Dublin Airport: "The schools are out and so are the swimming trunks and suitcases with the busy summer holiday season set to really get underway over the coming few weeks. Between 110,000 to 120,000 people will pass through Dublin Airport every day between now and early July as holiday-hungry travellers seek sun, fun, adventure and relaxation on the beaches of Europe and beyond.

“The team at Dublin Airport is ready to welcome each and every traveller and we look forward to getting their summer trip off to a smooth start. The busiest destinations for holidaymakers from Dublin Airport this summer will be Spain, North America and Portugal and we're also seeing big interest this year in Canada.”

In preparation for the busy summer period, a number of improvements have been made in and around the terminals at Dublin Airport to ensure high standards for passengers.

Graeme McQueen said: “The enhancements we’ve made, as part of the 15-point improvement plan we unveiled in March, came on the back of valuable feedback from passengers. We continue to listen closely to passengers to ensure we’re getting it right for them. One of the core aims of our plan is to get at least 90% of passengers through security screening in under 20 minutes this summer and we’ve exceeded this target over the past seven weeks, with 97% through in 20 minutes or less.”

Other improvements include faster free Wi-Fi speeds, 400+ additional seats at departure gates, the addition of designated family seating areas, a 20% increase in the number of taxis available, and 15% more active bus routes serving the airport.

Dublin Airport remains dedicated to delivering excellence in every aspect of the passenger journey and will continue to roll out further improvements over the weeks and months ahead which will greatly enhance the experience for all users of the airport.

Due to high demand, passengers are advised to book their parking in advance this summer. Those without a booking and unable to secure the dates they require online are advised to consider an alternate way of getting to the airport such as availing of one of the many bus routes that connect the airport with the rest of the island, taking a taxi or getting a friend or relative to drop them off.
