The canals of Bruges are known for their gentle flow, and there’s no more better place to enjoy the beauty of the city reflected on the tranquil waters that on the shore of the Minnewater, a wide canal known as the Lake of Love. The nickname comes from a story of a girl name Minna who died trying to escape from an arranged marriage into the arms of her lover Stromberg. Local legend says that lovers who cross the lake’s bridge will experience eternal love. Once a dock where ships and barges moored, the rectangular lake is now part of Minnewaterpark, a public green space that also includes remnants of castle ruins.

The tallest structure in Bruges and one of the most visually striking, the Church of Our Lady is a medieval edifice with a central brick spire that towers over the city. Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk is best known for the white marble Madonna and Child statue, the only work by Michelangelo to leave Italy during the artist’s lifetime. The impressive sculpture is situated on an altarpiece in the chapel’s southern aisle. The apse of the church is the final resting place of Charles the Bold and Mary of Burgundy. Bronze effigies of the last Valois Duke of Burgundy his daughter adorn the marble tombs.

Studies examining the reasons behind vaccine hesitancy in Brussels are underway, according to Brussels Health Minister Alain Maron (Ecolo).

Brussels vaccination rates have lagged behind the rest of the country throughout the pandemic, with only a little over half (56 percent) the residents of the Belgian capital having received a first shot of a Covid-19 vaccine.

Plans to increase the vaccination rate were developed back in August, and Bianca Debaets (CD&V) cited the fact that “no city in Western Europe does worse than Brussels,” calling it “shameful.”

They set the goal of a 65 percent vaccination rate (first shot) for the city by the end of October, still far behind what Flanders (86 percent) and Wallonia (76 percent) have achieved.

Now, two weeks before the deadline, the number for Brussels has only risen from 50 to 56 percent.

“The Flemish vaccination campaign is going extremely well. Internationally, Flanders is at the top. Nobody would have dared to predict this beforehand,” Maron told Bruzz.

“This has to do with good first-line care, to start. In that field, Brussels is ten years behind.”

He says there’s more than just the urban context to take into account when answering for the slow vaccination rate, especially considering other European cities are scoring much higher than Brussels.

“The vaccination rate [in Brussels] is too low,” Maron said. “But only two cities are more cosmopolitan than Brussels. Moreover, one third of the inhabitants are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. There are not that many capital cities with these problems.”

Maron says he wants things to move faster.

“It takes a lot of work, but little by little we are increasing the vaccination rate. Every day we carry out 20 to 30 decentralised actions, mainly in the neighbourhoods. We involve youth organisations, because they know the young people. We contact them to inform and convince them. This takes time, but it is the only way.”

The studies underway hope to discover more precise reasons behind why young people in particular are reluctant to be vaccinated. The idea is that once the reasons are known, they can be better addressed with awareness campaigns that ultimately raise the overall vaccination rate in Brussels.

“The results are not yet known,” said Maron, “but it is important that we know in detail why the vaccine is refused.”

The Grote Markt in Mechelen is a large square that is the heart of the city; it is the city’s main square. At one end of the pedestrian cobblestone square stands St. Rombold’s Cathedral, the city’s largest church, while the town hall occupies the other end. Restaurants and shops, that once were private homes, complete the other two sides. When the square was getting underground parking in 2004, remnants of a 13th century road were found. Today, the square hosts a market on Saturday mornings.

Bouillon Castle sits on a hill overlooking the city of Bouillon. It is believed to date back to the Romans, though it is first mentioned in the late 10th century. One of its early owners sold it to finance his participation in the First Crusade. The castle has three drawbridges, dungeons and a torture chamber that visitors will see as they make their way down from the top. The castle, considered one of the best in Belgium, has a unique, layered defense system designed to protect it from invaders.

Located in the southeast of the country bordering the Netherlands, Germany, and Luxembourg, Liege is a delightful part of Belgium to explore. The region is dominated by the city of the same name, which is the largest city in Wallonia.

Due to its strategic location on the river Meuse, the city of Liege is still relatively affluent compared to other cities in the south; this is evident in the wealth of shops, restaurants, and bars. This very picturesque place has a beautiful historic center for you to discover, as well as lovely riverbanks and green hillsides for you to stroll along.

In the east of the region, you’ll find the small, German-speaking part of the country, with its capital Eupen particularly interesting to visit. The town of Spa is not only home to lots of wellness centers and hot springs, but also the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix.

Brussels-Capital Region❤❤❤

The second most multicultural city in the world, Brussels is a fascinating place to explore. The nation’s capital has a plethora of different neighborhoods, each with its own look, feel, and identity. As Brussels is bilingual, with both French and Dutch being spoken, you’ll hear a lot of different languages; this is also in part due to it being the home of the European Union institutions.

The Grand Place is widely considered to be the most beautiful square in Europe, and is undoubtedly its main attraction. But there is much more for you to see and do, with the Atomium and Manneken P*s also very popular.

Alongside its multitude of amazing monuments and museums, the city’s architecture is eclectic, and loads of great restaurants and bars can be found scattered around. Delirium Cafe remarkably boasts over 2,000 different beers for you to try – a must when in Belgium.

Belgium appears headed for a new lockdown to stem a variant-fuelled surge in COVID infections, according to reports on the eve of an emergency government meeting set for Wednesday.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo is to chair the gathering of national and regional officials to decide measures to get a grip on worrying infection and hospitalisation figures.

Officials were considering closing schools from Monday, a week ahead of Easter vacations, and keeping them shut for three weeks, as well as expanding a nighttime curfew already in place and closing non-essential shops, Belgian media reported.

A government spokesman on the virus crisis, Yves Van Laethem, on Tuesday told a news conference that COVID-19 infections have risen more than 40 percent compared to a week ago and hospital admissions were up 12 percent.

All age groups were affected—including those over 90—across all of the country, he said, declaring: "The numbers are flashing red, as is the map."

With Belgium already subject to a nighttime curfew, a work-from-home edict and a general travel ban into and out of the country, the blame was put on the spread of the UK variant of the virus, which is more contagious and more severe in its effects.

A Belgian virologist, Marc Van Ranst, said the fact there were 282 new hospital admissions in the previous 24 hours was a "trigger" for urgent action.

He told De Morgen newspaper: "We have to be realistic. If we take measures now, we will abandon them at the earliest at the end of the Easter holidays. That's three weeks."
