Tornados are one of the most destructive and awe-inspiring weather phenomena on Earth.

The sheer power of these swirling funnels can be felt for miles around, and while we should all have some healthy fear and fascination, we have access to a few brave individuals who routinely place themselves in the 'eye of the storm', all in the name of science.

Come with us as we introduce you to some of the finest meteorologists in their field. Head out with them onto the front line to track some of the fiercest storms that occur annually along the infamous 'Tornado Alley' of America's Midwest. You will chase the storm (as close as is safely possible) and then work alongside the meteorologists to take samples and analyze weather patterns – your work will contribute to ongoing research into climate change.

This is your chance to get involved and have a tangible impact on a globally significant project, whilst also being at the epicentre of one of the world’s greatest weather spectacles.

Mount Iwate is a large snow-capped volcano at the back of Morioka City. Here it is pictured behind a perfectly positioned Japanese Cherry Blossom tree - the perfect epitome of springtime in Northern Japan.

The Kitakami River is home to a blooming array of hundred-year-old somei yoshino cherry blossoms.

On a nearby hill known as Jingaoka, you have the perfect vantage point to view the two-kilometre-long tunnel of ten thousand sakura trees within Tenshochi Park. There are over 150 species of sakura trees found here, including somei yoshino and Edohiganzakura (the oldest type of sakura).

Although not quite as famous as the Japanese cherry blossoms, plum blossoms (ume) are one of the earliest blooming flowers in Japan. They start blooming from mid-February until mid-March and unlike cherry blossoms, they have a sweet fragrance that is said to be a symbol of spring in Japan.

Plum blossom is often associated with the Samurai culture in Japan and is used as a motif in traditional Japanese art, such as Ukiyo-e prints. It is also often used to make plum wine (umeshu) and pickled plums (umeboshi). It is said to have various health benefits, such as improving digestion and boosting the immune system.

Some landscapes are so incredible that they just don’t seem real, and the Banaue Rice Terraces definitely fall into that category. Stretching thousands of feet high and carved into the earth by hand, the rice terraces in the mountainous regions of Ifugao and northern Luzon Island date back more than 2,000 years.

One of the best ways to explore is on foot. Hike the rugged terrain with our guide, take in the scents and sounds of the rice fields, and stop off at the local waterfalls and swimming spots to cool off. Or take a more leisurely tour by road, meet the locals who still farm the land according to their ancestors’ ancient techniques, and sample the fruits of their labour.

The verdant landscape is stunning and can take your breath away, but it’s the history, the community, and the traditions of the area that elevate this place to the world stage.
