Close to the top of the fortress, there’s a Lion’s Gate; a stairway with two massive lion paws made up of stone on either side. The legend has it that there was once a lion’s face sculpted into the rock as well, but it’s been corroded by the elements over the years. And that’s how Sigiriya - which translates as ‘lion rock’ - got its name.
