During your next stay in Borrego Springs, if the temperatures are high, there’s a rewarding drive with desert views from the mountains above.
It’s called Sunrise Hwy (S1) and it provides plenty of opportunities to hike and get a break from the heat.

Leaving around 5:30am will get you to the Sunrise Trailhead around 6:30am. It connects with the Pacific Crest Trail so it can be as short or long as you’d like.

Along this trail you get to view the rising sun, listen to quails coo and morning birds sing, breathe in the fresh cool air, and admire the views and flowers in bloom.

Plus, with temperatures 15° to 20° less than they are in town, this is a morning or day trip that can be well worth the drive.

Happy 4th of July everybody! We like to celebrate our Independence out here by enjoying the sweet silence of the night while admiring the stars and milky way.
And if we really pay attention, we may catch a shooting star or 2.

Remember to be mindful of the heat and rise early to explore, bring extra water wherever you go, return to your car by 9am and rest in a cool or air conditioned space during the hottest part of the day 2pm-5pm.

If you need any last minute provisions,
Village Liquor and X L Co will be open until 9pm.
Mirage Gas will be open until midnight.

We’re expecting some hot days ahead of us so stay safe out there.

Who’s had enough of the crowded beaches and traffic?
There are more private and peaceful scenes in the desert that await and water is included!
The clean pools in Borrego Springs are the perfect temperature right now and while there are several hotels and vacation rentals to choose from. Here are some of our favorites:

Photo 1: Perfect for a visit with friends or loved ones. With several pools to choose from,
Casa Del Zorro has some rooms and casitas available with a pool just a few steps away (make sure to mention your preference when booking). The main pool is located right next to the hotel’s bar and restaurant, The Fox Bistro so while your catching some sun, brunch and drinks are close by as well.

Photo 2: Bringing the family?
Club Circle East Resort has a few pet-friendly, private 1 and 2-bedroom condos available with a full kitchen and lots of charm. Their pool also has a ping pong table you can play in the shade.

Photo 3: For early mornings risers,
Borrego Springs Resort and Spa has tennis courts to play on before heading over to the pool with several shaded canopies to choose from. It is also located right next to The Arches, open for brunch on Saturday and Sunday morning. Cocktails anyone?

Pro tip: It’s worth waking up early to catch the coolest part of the day, 5am-10am and go exploring. Plan to rest in your air conditioned room during the hottest part of the day around 3pm so you can stay up to see the stars at night. This weekend will be a new moon so we’re expecting maximum visibility.

Enjoy!

Happy Summer Solstice!
Today is the longest day of the year, which means the nights will get longer, giving us more time to enjoy night sky.

The full moon will be rising tomorrow around 8:15pm, providing a Fonts Point photo op or the chance for a short but beautiful moonlit night hike.

The June Bootid meteor shower will be active from Saturday, June 22nd until June 2nd. The peak rate of meteors will be June 27th so if you can’t make it out here this weekend, next weekend will give you another opportunity for desert night fun.

We hope whatever you end up doing, that nature gets to be apart of it. Have a great weekend!

It's Memorial Day Weekend! Perfect time to visit Borrego Springs, CA and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Stop by the Sate Park Visitor Center for maps, books, and the latest information for visiting the park. For a primer stroll the interpretive trail (ADA compliant). Then get ready to be awed. Take the crew to Fonts Point. Marvel at the "Sky Art" sculptures scattered around the valley. "Sky Art" maps available at the Visitors Center, and from the Anza-Borrego Foundation and Anza Borrego Desert Natural History Center stores. Be awed by the night sky. Borrego Springs is a designated "Dark Skies Community". Explore Blair Valley. Go off road with over 400 miles of dirt roads, open for street legal vehicles only, four-wheel drive, high clearance a must. When the exploring is done, get ready to dine, and enjoy a beverage, in town along Palm Canyon Drive (in alphabetical order, because they are all our favorites) Carlee's, Carmelita's, Epicurious, Pablito's, or go "retro" at the nearby Arches Restaurant and Bar at Borrego Springs Resort. Borrego Springs, far from the maddening crowds, gateway to awesome experiences.

Last night’s solar storm reached Southern California and was visible subtly dancing around Borrego Springs’ dark skies between 9pm and 2:30am.
The event will last all weekend so it may be possible to witness it again tonight.

While the Spring Wildflower Bloom may be "over", with the fields of wildflowers along Henderson Canyon Road, Coyote Canyon, and some other spots somewhat dimensioned, due to the steady occurrence of spring rains many wildflowers and cactus blooms, along with a "greening" of the desert landscape, can be enjoyed at many of the trails in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The sand verbana at Lute Mesa off S-22 remain impressive. Exploring the washes in this general area you can see a variety of colorful flowers, including blooming prickly pear, ocotillo, and barrel cactus.

Want to catch a view of the badlands, but avoid the "crowds and dust" while heading up to Fonts Point? Try The Thimble Trail - easy to find just off S-22, the highway heading east from Borrego Springs, to the Salton Sea. The parking area is about 12.5 miles from Christmas Circle, on the south side of the highway just before mile marker 32. Look for the small "Thimble Trail" sign. It is directly across the highway from the parking area for Lute Mesa on the north. Also worth taking a peek at Lute Mesa as the blooming verbena has turned the whole slope purple with flowers. Plenty of parking space at the Thimble Trail head. If you have four-wheel drive, high clearance, you can drive the jeep road, about 4.5 miles, to Vista Mal Pais, for a great view of the badlands. It is a fairly easy 9-mile round trip hiking, with some beautiful views along the way. Our rainy Spring season has gifted us with plenty of a wide variety of wild flowers, blooming prickly pear, barrel cactus, and lush ocotillos to enjoy along the way.

Mother Nature decided to water the plants again! While the major "bloom" areas along Henderson Canyon Road and Coyote Canyon may be starting to fade the wet weather has "greened" the Anza-Borrego Desert with cactuses blooming and wild flowers popping up here and there. At the southern end of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, "far from the maddening crowds”, verdant vistas and a variety of wild flowers can be seen on the Dolomite Mine Trail. The 1.2 mile, up and back, fairly easy hike, can be accessed heading south on County Road S2, about 30 miles south of Scissors crossing, at mile 53.3. Look for the sign, east as you head south, at the jeep road entrance, drive half a mile (be careful in the soft sand but we made it in Nissan Sentra) to the parking area. Walk along the jeep road from the parking area about a half mile to the abandoned mine. The Ocotillos are fluffy green and the orange blooms look ready to pop. Flowering barrel cactus, prickly pear, brittle bush, monkey paw, desert lavender and jojoba.
While the days have been seasonably comfortable still make sure to bring plenty of water as the low humidity can dry you out on even a cool day.

No four wheel drive? No problem. Two of our favorite hikes starting right off the pavement are the popular William Kenyon Overlook Trail and the less known ridges above Yaqui Wash. Drive past Rams Hill Resort heading south from Borrego Springs on S3. The Yaqui Wash turnout is on the right, next to "the hill", before the road starts to climb. Parking area can be soft. Hike up the wash staying to your right, follow the wash a few hundred meters up, and you'll see a rock carin leading up a side wash. Great views exploring the ridges and washes. Rabbits, coyote tracks, impressive ocotillo stands, cholla fields, etc.. The William Kenyon Overlook Trail, for views of Mescal Bajada, is a couple of miles further up S3, at the top of Yaqui Pass. Parking area on your left. Fairly easy incline to the overlook. You can also follow the trail along the ridge line that leads down to the Yaqui Pass Campsite. Impressive views along the way

SUMMARY OF BORREGO SPRINGS WELCOME SIGNAGE SURVEY

The results are in of Borrego Springs first-ever community survey regarding welcome signage, known by the County as “community identification” signage. A total of 263 responses were received: 60% from full-time residents, 28% from seasonal residents and 12% from visitors.
An overwhelming majority, 90% of respondents, thought the need for new welcome signage is important. This response is a green light for the grass-roots signage committee to continue its efforts to design, build and install welcome signage.

For those visiting Borrego this weekend, there’s a new shop open for you to check out. Desert Lovers & Co recently opened its doors right next to Meta Skin Studio.
The brainchild of Cristina Antonia Serrentino, this artisan community has transitioned from its online space to a beautiful store carrying desert-inspired creations and locally sourced goods by Borrego artisans.

“My dream has always been to create an environment, a place where artists could sell their wares. The website allowed local artists to expand their reach beyond the surrounding area. The store provides many more artists a destination for their creations to be appreciated in person”, explains Cristina.

Something unique to the space is the Anza-Borrego Apothecary. Here, you’ll find Cristina’s candle-making studio as well as an assortment of products like hand-made salves, soaps, room sprays, oils and herbs.

At Desert Lovers & Co you’ll also find gift items like hand-knit apparel, crochet blankets, leather purses, jewelry, macrame wall hangings, paintings, mosaic furniture, and Wild Edge Threads tees and tanks inspired by the desert’s fauna and flora.

Don’t miss the opportunity to celebrate the birth of The Mall’s new artistic hub and support our local artisans.

This morning’s hike was glorious around Glorietta Canyon. The recent rain has saturated plant, sand and rock alike, bringing out a rich color palette of the desert.
Picturesque and yet photos don’t quite do it justice. Definitely worth experiencing in person.
A 6 to 6:30am start time is recommended for the best opportunity to catch the sunrise as well.
Happy hiking!

For those looking to start their day with a high intensity heart-pumping hike, this trail not only offers a challenge but plenty of beautiful views along the way to the top.

It’s called Alcoholic Pass and is located about 15 minutes north of town in Coyote Canyon.
If you do make it up to the top of the trail, there is a log book that you can read and sign.
Give yourself about 1-2 hours to make it up to the saddle and back to your car depending on how many breaks you take.
Things to keep in mind when when deciding to hike this trail:
• Mornings offer mountain shade until about 10am
• Can be a good sunset hike if you bring a flashlight for the way back
• There are lots of Ocotillos along this trail so if they’re leafing out, it’s just glorious to see
• There are lots of rocks and cactus so watch your step and take breaks for stronger coordination
• If it’s windy in town, it will be a lot windier here so better to return when the weather is calm

After your hike, Kendall’s Cafe at The Mall is a great restaurant to renourish and recover. They offer breakfast from 7am to 11:30am (or noon on the weekends), lunch until 2pm, and dinner from 4-8pm Wed-Sat.

This weekend is a great opportunity to get back into nature. The views are extra spectacular right now with leafed out ocotillos, some starting to turn orange and red.
Several shades of green desert shrubs and some autumn flower blooms can be seen throughout the area as well.
It will be warm so remember your hat, sunscreen and bring extra water. Early morning hikes are recommended as these days are starting off around 75°.
By 10am it will be closer to 90° so that is a good time to plan on being back at the vehicle.

If you do prefer to hike later in the morning, we recommend Culp Valley Cultural Preserve.
It is a 10-15 minute drive up Montezuma Valley Rd and a bit cooler as well.

For lunch you can stop by Borrego Days where there will be plenty of food vendors and live music happening at Christmas Circle on Saturday, Oct 21st from 9:45am - 6pm as well as Sunday, Oct 22nd from 10am-3pm.

Happy travels!

The Borrego Village Association, as well as the community of Borrego Springs, greatly appreciates receiving from the San Diego County Employees’ Charitable Organization (CECO) a grant of $1,293.00 to purchases 10 pairs of hiking shoes for Borrego Springs High School Students enrolled in our Interpretation Course. The program, in partnership with the National Association for Interpretation, allows students to earn accreditation as certified Interpretive Hosts and Nature Guides. This professional level certification is recognized as a credential by California State Parks, the U.S. National Park Service, and internationally.

The hiking shoes allow our students, the majority of them from families of need, representative of our community of 3,000 residents that is recognized by the State of California as a severely disadvantaged community, to access the pristine nature of 1,000 square mile Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, to participate in nature-based internship activities led by the State Park and, hopefully, make experiencing the outdoors part of their lifelong, healthy, lifestyle.

The Anza-Borrego Foundation want to share some tips to help you stay safer in the hotter weather. Although the number of visitors to the Park is much less in the summer, many come out to enjoy the desert heat. Here are our top ten tips on staying safer in the summer heat.
Note the BVA would like to add this "insider tip"...find a pool with a view!

1. Always research the weather before heading out. Know the temperatures at what time of the day by checking the hourly weather.
2. Avoid heat peak times by heading outside in the early morning or late afternoon.
3. Bring plenty of water and stay hydrated. You should always have more water than you need in case there is an emergency, and you get stuck outside longer than you expect.
4. Always let someone know your itinerary, including where you are going and when you return.
5. Learn to recognize heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Symptoms vary but may include headache, dry skin, high body temperature, red skin or rash, rapid pulse, dizziness, and confusion.
6. Wear lightweight, loose, breathable, and light-colored clothing. Bonus if it has an SPF of 50 or more.
7. Avoid dehydrating drinks such as alcohol, coffee, or tea. Supplement with electrolytes if you are sweating.
8. Use sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat to avoid sunburn.
9. Stay in the shade as much as possible and rest frequently.
10. Create a backup plan. Sometimes it is too hot to be outdoors, so have a fun backup plan indoors just in case!

Authentic, Sustainable Tourism Inspires Curious and Mindful People to Explore the World

The Borrego Village Association, is a nonprofit citizen stakeholder organization, it is working to create and sustain a thriving and attractive community, surrounded by Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

What is Geotourism? Tourism that sustains or enhances the distinctive geographical character of a place—its environment, heritage, aesthetics, culture, and the well-being of its residents.

What are the benefits? It benefits residents economically, it supports integrity of place, it brings together local stakeholders, it informs both visitors and hosts, and it helps travelers plan great trips.
