The Second Severn Crossing was opened this day 1996.

In July 1986, the Sec­re­taries of State for Trans­port and for Wales agreed to build a bridge across the Sev­ern Estu­ary to con­nect to the M4 on both banks, as well as to the M5 near Avonmouth. It took 4 years to build at a cost of £330 mil­lion and is approx­i­mately 3.2 miles, carrying three lanes of traf­fic in each direc­tion.

As much of the estuary is mudflats at low tide, but at high tide can be covered by up to 14 metres of water, the engineers were presented with a unique set of problems and had to complete the work at times allowed by the tides.

5 Month old Teddy loved his recent holiday to Tainters Brook. He particularly loved Llansteffan and his first time on a sandy beach.

📸📍 Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire

The small but mighty town of Kidwelly is home to just 3,500 people but it is steeped in Celtic history and culture.

Aside from Kidwelly Castle, one of the finest preserved Norman castles In Wales, and the Kymer canal and Quay, Kidwelly is also home to mysterious myth and folklore.

The lucky black cat of Kidwelly is said to have started appearing in the town after the great plague. It was therefore honoured as a symbol of salvation and deliverance

Every trip to Carmarthenshire needs a – a place to make special memories (and to get those all important pictures of course!) 🤩

And Cefn Sidan is one such place. Described as one of Europe's best beaches, Cefn Sidan is a 7.5 mile stretch of long golden sand is one of the treasures of Carmarthenshire.

Cefn Sidan was the first beach in Wales to be awarded the renowned Blue Flag Beach due to its pristine stretch of coastline. Despite its popularity there's plenty of room for everyone to enjoy 🌊

Carmarthenshire will feature not once but twice in this weeks Great Coastal Railway Journeys with Michael Portillo (Wednesday 23rd & Thursday 24th).

In Wednesday’s episode Michael’s train hugs the South Wales coast to Burry Port and he heads to Cefn Sidan beach to learn a spot of sand-yachting.

On Thursday his journey takes him on to Carmarthen and from here he visits the National Botanic Garden on Wales. Whitland is Michael’s next stop, for Pendine Sands, where he teams up with expert forager Craig Evans to comb the rock pools for tasty morsels such as seaweed, cockles and muscles and cooks them up for a beachfront banquet.
