A brief moment of reflection for the 🌲🌲🌲 of Northern Minnesota, because it never ceases to be magical to me. All of this pine and birch was once alive and growing, not too far from here. The birch underfoot was harvested just 10 miles from Grand Rapids, milled in Deer River, and will keep giving for many, many winters from now.

Mallard Point takeover! As my friend put it, it’s a joy to spend one of the coldest weekends this year with friends who ‘know how to do winter’. We spent the days getting carving lessons after harvesting a birch from the woods, watercoloring, reading, taking saunas, and cooking together (lamb roast!). We also got bundled up and took walks in the woods, shoveled a rink, skated under the stars, and went Nordic skiing. It was a beautiful dance between the frigid landscape outside ❄️ and the warmth of company inside 🔥

Looks like real winter is here to stay. Inch by inch, trails are opening- the lake is skiable, Tioga has groomed fat bike trails, and Mt. Itasca is open for downhill and Nordic. Come play!

Happy New Year + a day! We were out enjoying the dusting of snow and hope you were too. We have a long list of improvements planned for 2024 and it often seems like we add more than we check off, but we’re taking these first few days of the new year to appreciate Mallard Point for exactly what it is today and the special place it’s become for our family and some of yours. Cheers to the memories from years past and to those yet to come!

Dock in day. We didn’t have to dive for any wrenches, didn’t drop any posts on our toes, and only had to swim after one dock float, so yeah, we’re celebrating 🍻

What’s better than a winter morning in the woods? A morning in the woods on a bike! I’m so impressed with the quality of the trails at . Fat bike curious? Let’s bust a few myths…

1. It’s slow. — These trails are groomed to perfection, think ski hill corduroy, and are the opposite of slow. On the best days it’s like riding the red dirt underneath, thanks to a TON of grooming hours by .
2. My toes and fingers will be freezing. — Like any winter sport, good gear and a few hand/toe warmers go a long way. Also, temps around 20 (like we’ve had this winter) are the sweet spot between freezing and sweating.
3. Only the XC trails are rideable. — Nope! The downhill flow trails (Thrillseeker 🤙) are groomed and DREAMY.

If you’re here to XC ski, Mount Itasca is a must see. It’s one our favorite spots to glide through the forest and appreciate the winter landscape…and the fonts. Just be prepared to work your glutes 💪
