Business Plan or Business Snapshot?

Thank you for visiting my Business Planning page.

I have added this section because I have been receiving enquiries from entrepreneurs which started out like these:

"I have a plan in mind and I just want someone to put it together.. just a few pages will do."

or

"I just want a simple plan, not too many pages. I am just trying to entice some investors, so no need to be too detailed."

or

"Can you do up this plan in a week? I am going to see some folks next week."

I want to share with you guys what a business plan really is, so that you can get the most out of it and not have any false notion about what it is..

Let me start by saying that a business plan is a combination of a series of smaller plans. So, if anyone says he can whip up a business plan in a few days or a week, you can be assured that this is not a business plan. It is merely a submission to obtain a grant or just a sales proposal. It is certainly not something that will prepare you to meet investors and banks!

The reality of coming up with a good business plan is that your hierarchy of plans, goals, strategies, tactics and financial figures must all come together and:

i) Make a good and strong investment story
ii) Rest on solid assumptions and supported by solid rationale
iii) Demonstrated with detailed and important ratios
iv) Show evidence of achieving growth that is profitable
v) Depict the acquisition of resources to create growth
vi) Display maturity in ideas instead of naivety
vii) Be extremely clear and well-written & presented

The top five requirements listed above will easily take more than 10 pages.

But it is not the writing that takes time. It is the thinking through, the conceptualisation of ideas; identification of challenges and the solutions that will make all the parts "click"; the juggling of strategy, resources and financial scenarios until all the figures and ratios make financial sense and are still achievable.

Researching into competition, analysing their strategies, how these factors will impact your business and what steps to take to counter them must all be thought out and included into your plan.

And these are just a few of the many decisions required in developing a business plan. And there is a lengthy discipline involved in ensuring all factors are accounted for.

Investors will want to study every detail of your plan. They will want to evaluate all your financial projections because these will become KPIs which you will be held accountable for!

Mastering your financials is KEY to the success of your plan. Of course, investors will have their own expectations but if you have no clue about your own financials, you will be disadvantaged. Imagine over estimating revenue and underestimating cost. You will spend your next few years miserably!

Writing a business plan begins with formalising the organisation's vision and mission. If you are unable to conceptualise and define your vision and mission clearly, the rest of your plan will be like a piece of dough that won't be able to rise up no matter how you massage it. This first step is probably the most important ingredient of the entire plan.

I hope the above sharing will help you with your decision on whether you need a business plan or simply a document for a grant application.

When you engage me as your consultant, you will gain insights not only into how a business plan actually works for you but you will also benefit from the thoroughness of my work, which translate into great value for your venture.

I have a strong background in strategic marketing and quality system consulting; together with financial training (CFA).

Thinking about starting a business or how to move your business forward?

Having cash flow issues? Looking for investors? Applying for government funding or government license? Hoping to secure a large tender, land, franchise or even venturing into Singapore? Etc...

Where is the best place to start?

A business plan of course!

A business plan is a growth plan demonstrating how you plan to take your business forward. Investors, bankers, government agencies, principals, banks, major landlords, etc look for evidence of growth, how you are getting there and how well you know your business.

And the only way they can know this is by evaluating the elements of your business plan - strategy, operational objectives, and financials.

Exactly how well you manage your business also depends on how regularly you review these elements so that they will remain relevant.

Therefore, a clearly written and sound business plan is your key tool to securing funding, governmental endorsements and also to take your business to the next level.

Without a doubt, your business plan is your most valuable business tool because, without one, your business is going nowhere.

No matter how small your business, if you have a good plan in place, you can take advantage of loans from banks; approach investors; apply to government agencies for funding and obtain trade endorsements anytime.

So if you haven't got one done, it's time to call in the expert.

I am a professional business plan developer and writer with vast business experience across diverse industries who can help you create a winning plan that is well-though-out. Experienced and qualified, with loads of free advice, I can help you achieve your goals.

5 Business Ideas to Avoid in Singapore (2012)

Hi Ryan, interesting observations and accurate illustrations. However, many of these start-ups need not be failures if they had done their strategies and financials properly. Yes - even if the market they are in may be saturated with competition. This is what successful businesses arel about - that you have an advantage over your competition to market. And budding entrepreners need to understand what this means. It's like in any field or industry, being an entrepreneur requires talent too.

Run a business! Be your own boss! Then pay your own wages, wind up with a second mortgage, and go home every night wondering why death won’t just take you. I’m all for entrepreneurship; but when your...
