Our group this week had an awesome viewing of a Humpback Whale Lunge feeding very close to the shoreline from their kayaks!! 🛶🐋 You can clearly see the perfect bubble ring the whale blows to confuse the herring, once the herring are trapped inside the ring the whale lunges upward with its mouth open to capture it’s prey. This whale is also using the steep shoreline as an additional barrier to corral the herring. We see this incredible behavior often in SE Alaska, with both single whales and groups feeding together.

Spirit Bear sighting!! We were incredibly lucky to have an opportunity to spend time viewing a Spirit Bear also known as a Kermode bear flipping rocks and feeding along the shore of Princess Royal Island. Fewer than 400 of these white colored bears are thought to live in the coast area between SE Alaska and the northern tip of Vancouver Island.

G is for glacier! Whether you start or end one of our trips in Juneau, did Juneau you can visit our “backyard” glacier, the Mendenhall?! 🧊 The Mendenhall Glacier is a mountain glacier that’s terminus is the Mendenhall Lake. When it advanced thousands of years ago it carved out the Mendenhall Valley. It began its retreat in 1500 and now stands 2.5 miles from its old terminus. It’s Tlingit name is Sitaantaago or “the Glacier Behind the Town”. As it has retreated, an ancient forest has been uncovered and carbon dating has aged the stumps to be between 2,350-1,200 years old! Come visit this glacier as well as the tidewater glaciers in Tracy Arm Ford’s Terror Wilderness Area on our Around Admiralty departure.

E is for eagle! The Bald Eagle has not always been appreciated in Alaska. From 1917-1953 the state enacted a bounty hunt paying 50 cents per pair of eagle feet because they were believed to be in direct competition with fishermen for salmon. It wasn’t understood at that time that bald eagles are opportunistic hunters and prefer the ease of going after other creature’s catches. They will chase osprey in mid flight until they drop their catch, or as witnessed by our naturalist steal a salmon directly out of the mouth of a Steller sea lion! Bald Eagles are an important part of the ecology of Southeast Alaska. They often bring their salmon catch into the woods to enjoy and then leave the carcass behind. The nutrient rich carcass decomposes enriching the soils and helps the iconic spruce and hemlocks grow tall. That is why we can say in southeast their are salmon in our trees! 🌲🦅

D is for deer, Sitka black-tailed deer that is! We promise we aren’t all about the bears, but also enjoy scouting the shorelines of the ABC Islands for the gentle and shy leaf eating deer. They depend upon the old-growth forests of the islands to provide food and habitat during the long and wet winters. Fawns are born from late May through mid-June and if you book an early season trip with us you have a good chance of seeing the gangly babies feeding alongside their mothers.
