"National Cat Day"

There are some kids, some birds, and a dog in this scene so I'd say it stands to reason that there are also cats present. Therefore, is an appropriate number sign to post. Bring on the followers.

I really liked the diversity of this scene. The sunset over the ocean, light washing on a beach, mountains in the background with a sky accented by clouds. But also an overflowing parking lot in contrast. And a manmade path dissecting the beach with hundreds of people moving about like ants.

Whether on purpose or not, I like the dichotomy of nature and human imprint. The marks and scars humans leave in nature is intriguing. Like a decaying building - there's beauty in the brokenness in a way.

Not that this beach is broken. It's Santa Monica Pier so you decide, but the mix of the rich and poor, the local and the tourist, nature and man - add in some great Golden Hour light and spots of color and you got yourself a photo, Gang.

Cheers!

What does it look like to you?

When I got Bill (Land Rover named after Samwise Gamgee's pony from LOTR), the first trip I took was along good ol' I-70 to California. Finally, I was going to be able to get off the road, deep on some dirt roads, and get lost in the amazing landscapes I'd seen while making that drive countless times before.

This was the first stop. I was staying on BLM land because it's free, gets as remote as you want, and offers good photo opportunities. I was still messing with my new camera (STILL excited about it) so I was experimenting.

I really like this photo. It's simple. I know most of y'all don't like black and white but I do. It's a quintessential landscape photo that has some trees, clouds, and mountains. But it's just a few trees, not chaotic, just one cloud, and one mountain. It feels underwhelming but peaceful and simple.

So named because then you can comment and say what you think the cloud looks like. Get that engagement going, Gang!

Cheers!

"U-Tah Mood"

See, because it's like U-Haul but U-Tah. Because I took it when I was moving my storage/home base from California to Colorado. And it was a dark, blue, moody sunrise - even the warm light of golden hour shone cold on the sandy formations far away from paved roads.

Normally on my trips in Ace - my sports car red 2016 Jetta - I'd make the trip in two days. From Northern Colorado to St. George then St. George to LA. That way, I only had to do one hotel and I could save on food, etc. But the drive on I-70 between Denver and the edge of Arizona is the most beautiful road in America.

No, you're wrong, it is.

Anyway.

Along the route I'd always seen these great photo opportunities and always wanted to spend more time on the route. So when I got my Land Rover (sadly it died) and a rooftop tent, I took 5 days each way and stayed on BLM land and far down trails in Utah. It ended up being cheaper and very life-giving. Staying in the wilderness always shakes the dust off my heart and soul and I'd plans to live pretty much full time from the Land Rover - just writing and photography-ing.

Eventually I felt it would result in some income as there were and are surmounting bills and debt that i can't address. It's not running or fleeing but an insatiable call on my life that I can't put off. Still working out how to communicate all that.

But also hence the title. Of transporting my emotions and workings of things out around the wilderness. I'm hauling them around and expressing the moods.

It's a lot like this photo which is why I'm posting it.

Self indulgent?

Yes.

Do I apologize for that?

No. At least not on social media but probably would in person.

Enjoy!

"The house isn't upside down. YOU'RE upside down."

Does it look cool if you flip it? Yes. And if you want to buy a print and flip it and hang it, that's up to you. But I'm not going to. I've made my decision and I will die on this hill.

My process has changed as does every photographer as they move forward. At first it was taking 50 pictures of one thing then trying to "find" the photo in Lightroom. Then editing the sheet out of it. My setting weren't great, information was lost, there were a LOT of Photo 101 compositions (like, A - LOT, fam. So many.), and I'd do things like tilt the camera or flip a composition. But I found my voice and eye and now when I shoot, I know what I'm going to do in post before I shoot it.

I do edit more than most purists. I'd say probably 25% of the art for me is in Lightroom. While I stay true to what the actual colors of the scene were in person and I don't photoshop things out and I don't use AI, but I do tweak to portray the "feel" I felt in my feels in feeling of the moment.

So there ya go, gang. It's not upside down but feel free to flip it if you want.

Cheers!

"Moon Shot Out of Lava Tube - A Memoir"

Have you noticed how adding "A Memoir" to a sentence just makes it better? Well now you have.

So here we are in the Mojave desert facing away from the sunset and watching the moon rise. Was supposed to be a special moon but I've forgotten what that was as it didn't do anything more spectacular than usual. Don't get me wrong, the moon is great, I'm pro-moon and I support it - it just wasn't doing a special thing like the news and socials were saying it would. I didn't expect it to tap dance or reveal just what kind of cheese its made of, but I did expect it to be brighter or bigger or organger or something.

So I waited until the colors were good and a jet stream lined up with the top of the mountain and it looked like it was being shot out of the tip.

That's not actually a mountain, by the way. It's a lava tube. I'm not sure what that means, exactly, as I did not explore but I think you can go down in them like the worm tracks in Dune. Or the path the Technodrome leaves in teenage mutant ninja turtles. Turtle power, fam. Turtle Power.

The entire evening was filled with great light, good feels, and great photography. Perfect temperature and ambience to fall asleep in a rooftop tent.

Here's to hoping for more trips and better shots
Cheers!

"Mojave Sunset?"

I couldn't think of a more clever title hence the Ron Burgundy-esque punctuation.

But, as the apt title suggests, this is a photo I took in the Mojave desert at sunset.

All Tom Foolery aside, gang, this photo is pretty meaningful for me. I had a Land Rover whom I'd named Bill (like Samwise's pony in LOTR) with a rooftop tent. I'd removed the rear seats and had my photography gear, cooking stuff, and had planned on traveling around the western US and down into Baja for a year or two just writing, taking photos, making films, and living out who I know I've become.

On this particular trip driving between California and Colorado on the ever-present road in my life, I-70, I was able to stop at many of the places I'd always wanted to take photos and just exist in. Believe me when I say I have never, in my life, felt more peace and sense of purpose and being EXACTLY where I was supposed to be than I have on this trip.

That overwhelming feeling of, "yeah. I've found it." hit me after shooting this sunset and sitting by my fire. I was 12 miles from the nearest "town" if we can call it that and one needed 4WD to get to where I was. It was perfect.

I completed the trip to Colorado with the intent of having a home base there and traveling full time and, of course, the Land Rover broke down. Because of the Colorado laws around old vehicles, I was unable to work on it myself and had to sell it.

And that hurt.

Not sure how, if, or when I'll be able to get back out there but this photo (and the ones to follow) are all filled with a sense of purpose for me. Discovery of self, this world, and more.

I know, poetic and nonsense but actually very true.

Anyway, enjoy it or you'll hurt my feelings and that's not allowed.

Cheers!

“Classic Arizona Shot but, Like, Better. In My Opinion, Anyway."

Alright, we're back on the socials after a bit of a hiatus.

I've some new shots from 2024, a new plan for the next 12 months and finally getting some traction, some forward progress.

As I've been commuting between California and Colorado, wearing ruts in I-70 over the Rockies, through uninhabited stretches of Utah, canyons of Arizona, and into the barren stretches of Nevada and Southern California, I've been stopping to take photos of places I note in my travels.

Sadly, I will be retiring the route with pro ably 95% of the shots marked on my GPS untaken; however, life dictates a different but exciting direction.

More to follow.

In the meantime, enjoy this shot. All day the light was not cooperating. I had dramatic clouds but not light on anything around me. I was on an outcropping surrounded by canyon walls like this shot but NO LIGHT. Had it been less windy, I'd have given up, lit a fire, and smoked a cigar BUT I decided to wait for the light. And I'm glad I did, the sun peaked below the cloud cover and lit up the wall across from me in a dramatic way. This is one of my favorite shots from that trip.

So there you go. Wait for the light. That's a photography thing and a Life in General advice from Doc. Take a pause and wait it out.

Cheers!

That's right, gang, this photo "Old Man By the Sea - But Not Actually the Sea, It's the Pacific Ocean But That Didn't Sound As Catchy, so "Sea"" was selected for exhibition at the Photo North Festival in Leeds, UK (the England part of the UK).

40 of the selected photos will be printed and displayed and the photographer goes to Leeds, UK (the England part of the UK) and, like, stands awkwardly next to their photo while people walk by and say, "Hmm." then keep walking. Or they get knighted by the Queen? Something like that.

More than likely, mine will not be printed and displayed but will be in the online exhibition.

The competition was for "Solo Subjects" displaying solitude and "Old Man By the Sea - But Not Actually the Sea, It's the Pacific Ocean But That Didn't Sound As Catchy, so "Sea"" was a top contender it seems.

More to follow.

01/12 - “New Lighthouse, Who Dis?"

Actually it's the same Light House from last week but from a different angle.

But I like it and I'm sharing it.

This one is near Tarbert which is the little piece of land connecting the Isle of Harris to the lower part of the Isle which truly looks like an alien planet with the rocky terrain on the East side but also has white sand beaches and turquoise water on the West side. Crazy.

Just before you get to Tarbert, you take a winding road that goes over a bridge to the tiny Isle of Scalpay. It's out of the way, hard to get to, but that's where my B&B was for the few days I was exploring Harris.

On the Island is a 3 mile hike through pastureland (it's private land but in the UK, everyone is allowed on it to hike and camp - great law that could never work in America because we don't respect things) that leads to this lighthouse that's still in use though not occupied. I have a photo of it lit as well that I'll share alongside the main photo.

I did my research before even leaving the US and had already planned this hike so I'm glad it worked out so well. Not just the photos, the whole hike was brilliant.

01/11 - “Country Road Take Me Home"

This is what the Scots call a "Single Track Road." It is a one lane road with two-way traffic and they comprise much of the roadway in the Scottish countryside. If you're north of Edinburgh and not on a Highway, then you're on one of these.

I have some video going pretty fast on them in Yari Yaris (my rental - see a few days ago) feeling like I was driving a WRX in some sort of derby. I don't know what they're called, ok? The races on dirt paths with the spaz calling out directions like an auctioneer at an estate sale.

But I digress.

It was pretty gray and brown so I made it black and white; however, it was also for the nostalgia and memory. There's so much peace and "home" for me in Scotland and I'm pining to go back.

Also I've about 331 usable photos from that 21 day trip back in 2018 so buckle up gang, many more to come.

01/10 - “That Time My Photo Got Published"

That's right, sports fans, published.

DoHo Magazine's issue "The Essence of Architecture" will be featuring this photo in an upcoming release. I don't know when.

I honestly don't know much about the magazine other than it was listed on a few "Top 10 Places to Submit Your Photos in 2024" sort of articles. On the Top 10 it was 10th and on a Top 12 it was 12th, but, listen gang, it's a start.

This was one of those shots that I really liked and truly thought was good but didn't seem to get much attention.

It was shot in Scotland with my old 80D on aperture priority (I know, but I hadn't learned enough to be on manual yet) but I did have a great lens that I still use - an EF 24-70mm F2.8 L.

On a side street in Oban, Scotland - a small bay with a ferry to the Outer Hebrides and a great scotch distillery - there was a strip of buildings like our strip malls but, you know, older than America.

One particular building was under construction. Yes, the one in the picture. Well done. I think there was a fire and they're in the process of rebuilding and the scene struck me. Through the windows I could see the back of the buildings behind with roof access and I had a lot of thoughts and questions.

The sign says "Plumbers" and has an arrow to the door, the colors on the front are varying, where does that door in the back go, why is the other building circular, is that a water storage... and so on.

Whenever something makes me stop, I take a photo. That's my goal with photography, to make people look and say, "Oh, that's a good photo... but, wait... what's that? And what about this?" Something that draws people in and we can hang out for a minute.

Anyway, someone finally thought it was good and is putting it in their magazine in an issue called "The Essence of Architecture" which is swell.

01/06 - “It's A Lighthouse - But It's On An Island In Scotland. So."

Yes, the subject is tired - we've all seen a million lighthouse photos and even more lighthouse pictures.

For me, though, this one was in an area that felt like home to me.

Do you ever feel that way?

You take a hike or go to another country, climate - just somewhere "else" and you instantly feel at home? Like you've always belonged there. A peace, purpose, etc.

I felt that in most of Scotland but even more so around Talbert on the Isle of Harris which is one of the Hebrides (heh-breh-deez) off the west coast of mainland Scotland.

I also feel it when I'm a few miles into the wilderness.

Not the woods - the wilderness. I'm not talking a hike around Bear Lake, I'm talking 15 miles into the Lost Coast Trail where the next human is literally 50 miles away.

And it's not the isolation, though that's a thing.

I'm talking about the land itself speaks to you somehow.

I know, a bit deep for social medias but it was a thought.

Cheers!

01/05 - “Make it Work"

Sometimes when things don't work out exactly how you planned, that things aren't "square" as it were, it actually ends up better than if things went smoothly.

This house, for example. If the windows ended up being square, it would be a quaint house but unremarkable.

You may not be a contractor but it doesn't take one to see that these windows are not, in fact, square.

But it works and they even painted to highlight the eccentricities.

Maybe that's what we (read: I) should do.

Just embrace the eccentricities. Strive for square, for things to work, but accept the oddities and make it a part of the story.

The best stories come from the biggest misadventures.

Alright, gang, have a great weekend.

01/03 - “Writing House"

I'm feeling nostalgic looking back and as plans for Scotland are coming together, memories of Scotland come back. And I play the What If game.

I went to Scotland the year before I graduated from Weslyan Univeristy and while I was driving around the country for 3 weeks, I stopped for a few days at St. Andrews.

While I was there, I went to the University of St. Andrews to see about getting my MA in Creative Writing. Things didn't align, especially since I had Archie (my service dog) at the time but I'd planned to apply for a PhD there once I finished my MA at CalArts.

Now I'm a bit too removed and it seems a bit like a pipe dream to go for a PhD but I still think about it.

A while back, I took a 3 week trip to Scotland and hired (read: rented) a car and drove around Scotland from Edinburgh up to the Orkneys and down the North Coast 500 (where these photos were taken) to Ullapool where I caught a ferry and explored the Isle of Sky and Isle of Harris and so on and so on back to Edinburgh.

It was an amazing trip and this little guy only had 15 miles on him when I left Edinburgh. His first adventure was my favorite one.

2023 is done, gang. Another one in the books.

As with any year, there is good and bad and I don't put a whole lot of stock into the change from one year to the next as far as dates.

However.

Seeing as most people are either off work or not working to full capacity for about 4 weeks around this time, there IS a reset.

And when this reset occurs, I have some great plans on the way.

2024 is going to be a lot of fun. Realizing some lifelong goals and making some big moves. Challenging for sure but I'm stoked.

12/30 - “Quintessential Rocky Mountain Trail"

Around every bend on most of the trails I hike in the Rocky's has a view like this. It almost seems common and typical to frame it up and take the shot and not think about it.

However, having lived in SoCal (that's Southern California, gang) for 5 years-ish now, I look back at these photos and wish I'd taken more and also shot more video along the way.

This one, similar to the one a few days ago, has diagonally intersecting lines that I like and also shows the color contrast between white snow/dark trees and orange-yellow rocks/deep blue sky. It also shows how steep and narrow the trails can be and usually are as you get higher in altitude. This would have been around 11k feet (3350 meters for every single place not in the US. Come on, fam, let's just go to the metric system. It's getting ridiculous.)

12/29 - “Saturation"

The AWB (that's auto white balance for those keeping notes at home) on my camera (Canon EOS R at the time) was having a Dickens of a time finding white because of how saturated everything was with the fading sunlight.

It was the kind of sunlight you can feel.

Like it feels heavy like a blanket and seems to permeate everything.

The scene was otherworldly pink at times and then so yellow you felt you were walking in a golden forest. And that's not an exageration.

The camera tried making everything green when it was pink and blue when it was yellow so eventually I had to do it manually.

Not so hard to find white with snow as white as this was.

As a result, the color you see here is not what the raw file would be. At this particular moment, it was so yellow that it would look fake to post and I'd be accused of using AI or over editing and I'll have no such accusations, thank you.

The bare tree on the right side of the frame retains some of the saturated yellow and the silky smoothness of the light.

Also it was very cold and my hands hurt.

12/28 - “Rocky Mountain Sunset"

The sun had been cooperating all day with shadows, dappled light, clouds, and more. Heading back down into the tree line, the sun ducked beneath the cloud cover and lit the underside of the clouds in stunning and iconic Colorado fashion.

I could have taken hundreds of photos here but they would all look pretty similar so I elected to go for composition over feel.

For this one, there's the obvious interest in the sky, even color palette, and intersecting lines. In nature, it's difficult to isolate a subject and for this photo, the cliff that extends from the lower left corner diagonally through the frame is said subject. It is in sharp focus, the sun lights all the different colors brilliantly.

In the background, another slope intersects diagonally giving balance to the scene.

This was the last photo I took on the trail because I stayed here until after it was dark then hiked back to the trailhead, alone, amid ravenous packs of mountain lions, wolves, and bears.

I didn't see any or even any evidence of their presence so I have been accused of being "dramatic" which is not like me in any way ever.

Enjoy the waning days of 2023 gang!

12/27 - “Cell Phone Lock Screen"

I was absent for a few days and I know y'all have been pining for the daily photo. So we resume with probably my favorite winter photo that I've taken.

I love the softness of the snow, the red of the pine trees as they catch the sun and the blue of the snow as it falls into shadow. The snow gives a good void (you know how I like a good void) but is broken up by a rock and the shadow.

It's a simple but solid composition and I feel the same peace when I see the photo as I did when I took it.

As the title implies, this is the photo for my lock screen on my phone as well as my profile picture for those who have my number.

Like yesterday and other photos that I'm posting, the sun was really cooperating on this hike. This path had patches of sunlight as through windows and ended in a sunny doorway. The dabbled light created, what I think, amazing detail and interest into an interesting photo.

I like the lines in the photo as well.

The path is straight through the photo from bottom of frame, terminating in the center of the frame. yet, because of the angle, it feels almost off balanced and sloping from left to right running into the vertical lines of the trees. Then the contrast of the white vs blue snow and the snow in general vs the dark trees.

Then there's that light at the end of the tunnel.

The slope is steep and just down from the narrow trail is a drop to the rushing water below. I like when beauty and danger mix like this.

It's a long hike and gets above tree line and, to get that good-good light, it becomes necessary to be on the trail way after the sun sets. That's fine if I'm near my vehicle, but this is in the Rocky Mountains where there are bears, mountain lions, and like badgers and stuff.

Y'all stay classy out there, gang.

12/23 - “Some Sun on Some Aspens"

The sun was really participating well on this 12 mile hike around 12k feet. It was a cloudy day but that kind of cloudy where the sun pokes through and does interesting things.

This was one of those things.

It was pretty dark on the trail, as is evident in this photo, and the sun lit a section of the trail ahead, again, as is evident in the photo, and made these trees stand out starkly against the dark trees.

Honestly now I feel like I'm just saying what the photo is.

Anyway, it was a great moment and taking photos in a forest that work is actually pretty tough. This one worked out.

Happy Saturday y'all.

Remember to be patient and kind with the retail workers and people in traffic with you. It's not their fault you waited until Mary's water broke to go to the store.
