Scotland’s weather has been something else this week! It’s looking pretty good up here! Had my first trip the the Isle of Raasay last week, had some lovely fish and chips in Plockton, saw the Isle of Skye in the sunshine for the first time in a while! And saw a different perspective of Loch Ness! A great 6 days working with Scotland Folk Tours by Heartland Travel. It’s a thought job I’ve got, I tell you!

Alexander Selkirk, spent most of his life at sea, with the exception of the 4 years and 4 months he spent marooned on a desert island. From October 1704 to February 1709 he lived in solitude on the Juan Fernandez Island off the coast of Chile. He survived eating crab and hunting feral goats. He build a home for himself with separate sleeping quarters and a kitchen.

When he was finally rescued he was so excited he couldn’t speak coherently and ran towards his saviours, who thought he was mad and nearly shot him dead.

He didn’t return home straight away and continued to sail the seas with his new crew until 1711, when he briefly returned to Scotland.

His story became national news and would later inspire Daniel Defoe to create the character Robinson Crusoe.

He died at sea of a tropical disease, off the coast of Ghana, Africa in 1721
