The hooghan nímazí (round home), also known as the traditional Navajo hogan, is a very unique, and symbolic structure. The home is a key part in Navajo way of life; it is the foundation for Navajo families. Within the home is a place of peace, comfort, love, compassion, kinship, and safety. The single, opened-room home also serves as a bed room, living room, kitchen, dining room, classroom, ceremonial home, art studio, and so much more.

In the center of the home is the fireplace, the heart of the home. The fireplace provides heat for warmth, and lights up the home. It is where the cooking is done, and prayers are uttered. Everything within the Navajo home revolves around the fireplace in a clockwise motion, and families gather around the fireplace to share a meal, songs, prayers, & stories of the past & present. The fireplace is key to every Navajo home.

On this day, we'd like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving, from our home and fireplace to yours. Where ever your hearts and homes may be, may your fireplace continue to bring good health, comfort, love, and happiness to each and everyone one of you.

Imagine living in the same place your entire life and then suddenly discovering that there had been another world existing under your feet the whole time.

This is likely how the first explorers of Mammoth Cave felt. There isn’t a specific person that can be given credit for discovering Mammoth Cave, but its likely that many different individuals and groups of prehistoric Native Americans stumbled across the formidable Historic Entrance thousands of years ago and were shocked to discover what laid beyond.

Mammoth Cave was discovered again in the late 1700s and this next generation may have shared the same awe when they stumbled across the Historic Entrance. Perhaps they had already established a home site and community, and unbeknownst to them there was another life existing below them. Were they surprised to find that they weren’t the first humans to enter this mysterious place? Were they struck with disbelief when they found creatures dwelling in the darkness that were unlike any others seen before?

Visitors today are not too different from those of Mammoth Cave’s past. We share the same curiosity and amazement.

This curiosity begs the question, do you know what’s under your feet?

Ranger in a rainbow? How delightful!

The natural light phenomenon you see above is called a Brocken Spectre rainbow. This rainbow halo occurs when the sun is low in the sky and behind a hiker who is looking down into the mist from a cliffside.

Their shadow is projected onto the clouds, and the ring of light surrounding it is from diffracted sunlight hitting water particles in the air.

The photo you see above was taken on Halemau'u trail. Often misty and full of cliffsides, you might spot this unique rainbow on your next hike!

➤ Silver Falls State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Oregon, located near Silverton, about 20 miles (32 km) east-southeast of Salem. It is the largest state park in Oregon with an area of more than 9,000 acres (36 km2), and it includes more than 24 miles (39 km) of walking trails, 14 miles (23 km) of horse trails, and a 4-mile (6.4 km) bike path. Its 8.7-mile (14.0 km) Canyon Trail/Trail of Ten Falls runs along the banks of Silver Creek and by ten waterfalls, from which the park received its name.
