Day 2 Blog is live

“I have had kind of a lot of time to just sit and think during the travel. Sometimes my thoughts are my friends—other times not. Somewhere over the Atlantic I queued up a movie called “The Iceman” about a young guy from Denmark who decided he would take on a full distance triathlon in the frigid cold and snows of Antarctica. I muttered to myself…”I’m sure he gets it done or they wouldn’t make a documentary, but what an idiot…who in their right mind takes on an Ironman in one of the most unforgiving environment in the world?”

I was probably 45 minutes into the two hour Iceman documentary before it hit me—“You are literally on your way to Nepal to attempt the World’s highest marathon you moron!”

In the quiet moments of this last flight, I contemplated the whole endeavor. Don’t get me wrong…if you were planning to run the world’s highest marathon you should have experience at high altitude, which I have…you should have at least some experience as a marathoner, which I do…and you should be crazy enough that even the people that love you occasionally worry about your sanity—I’m 3 for 3. Still, I had some thoughts today that I don’t love writing about...”

Friends, we are working with our friends at Lfwc Barnsdall to bring relief and supplies to the hurting people in Barnsdall. LFWC has been providing meals and serving as a supply distribution venue since the first hours after the tornado hit, and there is no one that I trust more to care for the community in the coming weeks and months. If you would like to help them help Barnsdall, you can send them funds directly to their cash app $LFWC777 or you can make a tax-deductible donation to Project Doxa via our giving portal and we will get them the funds. https://projectdoxa.kindful.com/?campaign=1301980

Just had another sign up for our Mt Yale Men's trek in July. This is one of the trips I am most excited about for this year. Yale is a gorgeous mountain and we have a great itinerary planned for the team. If you have been considering a Discipletrek adventure and don't know where to start, this is one of the trips I would recommend. https://discipletrek.org/yale-mens-24/

And ladies...we didn't forget about you. We have two all ladies trips this summer. One in Yosemite and one that basically tracks the same itinerary as our Yale Men's team, except the ladies will be climbing Quandary Peak instead of Mount Yale.

Now is the time to sign up for our summer trips. You know you are going to see pictures of our teams enjoying cool summer mornings in the Rockies while it is hotter than the surface of the sun in Oklahoma and wish you had signed up 😎

Mt. Yale [Men] (July 27-31, 2024) We are so excited to be offering this adventure that will culminate in a summit attempt on Mount Yale. Sorry ladies, this is a men only trip. Yale is a challenging mountain with stunning views of the surrounding Collegiate Peaks. We designed this trip specifically f...

We’re all making our way home now, but truly blessed to spend a week with this crew on Kili. It’s kind of hard to explain to people who’ve never fought for breath at high elevation what that experience is like…it isn’t for everyone, but this crew took every punch the mountain threw at them and never wavered. On our flight from Kili to Addis Ababa there were more than two dozen Kili climbers. We met 10 of them. None made the summit; while all four of my team did. I am just so proud of them all.

I have wanted to climb Kilimanjaro since the very first moment I learned about the mountain. I honestly believe that was a God-given desire. When I made the decision to go from couch to Kili in one year back in 2019; it didn’t feel like a step towards my destiny or my dreams…it just seemed reckless and stupid. I was very out of shape & overweight and I had never climbed any mountain of any kind. Still; I knew I needed to take a big step.

Now, having summited 3 times (and with our 4th trip already on the calendar), I have so much more clarity about this journey. Each of my team members has told me the exact same thing in the last 48 hours since descending—“this was life changing.” And they’re right. There is no substitute for the confidence gained from overcoming a challenge that demanded everything from you.

Kilimanjaro is unique in that it remains a very difficult climb for experienced mountaineers (19,341ft in a week is objectively difficult for all humans), but it is also still accessible to very novice hikers if they can access the mental fortitude the mountain requires.

Many will read this and offer the same two objections I hear again and again about all of our adventures: 1) “I could never…” & 2) “It’s too expensive.” To the first—I would challenge you to learn a new phrase. Instead of “I could never;” learn to say: “I can’t yet.” Ask my kids how many times I corrected them on this score.

Them: “Daddy, I can’t.” Me: “You what?” Them: “I can’t…YET.” It’s not just semantics…it’s mindset. There are a great many things future you will manage but present you cannot handle. If you understand that, you are ready to begin.

To the second objection—it is 100% true that our adventures are expensive. We make no apologies about this. We use our trips to fund missions projects, and that work is not cheap. That said, this too is more a matter of mindset than finances. I spend hours and hours each year counseling people trying to find their way in this world, and if I offered many of these folks the chance to write a $5k check in exchange for the confidence to start a business/get in shape/face their most crippling fears, most would cut the check on the spot.

The truth is we need adventure. It’s not extra—it’s not one of those things the privileged get to do when they’ve grown bored. God created us with a need for adventure so we would explore the beauty of his creation and offer him worship.

So, if you’re reading this and you know I’m talking to you. Message me and let’s grab coffee/breakfast/lunch. I’ll buy.

We are one week out from our 2024 Kilimanjaro climb. This may seem impossible, but Kilimanjaro is at the same time both a very difficult climb, even for experienced trekkers, and also a very accessible climb for novice trekkers. There are zero technical sections and the daily mileage is manageable for almost anyone. The challenge (and the reward) is conquering the 19,341ft of elevation. We will be bringing another team to Kili in January 2025 and now is the perfect time to sign up. We are offering $100 off the deposit and total cost of the climb to anyone who registers and pays their deposit before the end of January.

Headed back to Big Bend National Park in February (Feb 7-11). If you are interested in getting into backpacking, not many better options than this trip. We’ve led more trips here than anywhere else and we’d love for you to join the team. Also, night skies in BBNP are impossible to describe.

Just had a couple more people sign up and another inquire about our upcoming Big Bend trek. We have room for a few more people and I know several of you have asked me recently about Big Bend. This trip is our least expensive and most novice friendly treks. It will be an excellent adventure and we hope you will consider joining us.

Big Bend-South Rim (Feb 7-11, 2024) Big Bend National Park is one of our favorite locations to explore. It is remote, rugged, and spectacularly beautiful. Trekking in the mountains and deserts of Big Bend is a unique challenge. The weather can range from at or below freezing at night to brutal heat....

It’s official! We are taking on the Enchantments. This adventure is not for the faint at heart. We are talking about 20 miles of trekking with 5,500+ feet of gain & 7,000+ feet of loss through an almost other-worldly environment…all in a single massive day on trail. This is widely considered the most scenic hike in all of Washington state. Our adventure is 3 nights (Sept 5-8) and starts/finishes in Seattle. Cost is $1,150. This is not a beginner trip…we have lots of those…this will be a very big challenge for even the fittest trekkers. We are limiting this trip to 7 people, so you definitely want to sign up now if you are interested.

So excited to be launching our newest adventure to Yosemite and Lake Tahoe! This action-packed trip will start/finish in one of our favorite cities—Reno NV (Aug 26-30); and will include 2 challenging hikes: Yosemite Falls—8 mile r/t & Cloud’s Rest—12 miles r/t, both with serious elevation gain & spectacular views. The trip will finish with an overnight at gorgeous Lake Tahoe. Cost for this adventure is $1,150. We have very limited space on this team, so if you are interested, we need to know asap. We will have more details on the site very soon.
