We're excited to be welcoming the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru in 2026, when it will be just a few miles down the road from our cottages. 🎭

But do you know where the first ever Eisteddfod was held?...

Just a few more miles down the road in Aberteifi/Cardigan. 🤯

A great write up of local Welsh history below...

Bore da, bawb!

Did you know that the first known Eisteddfod took place throughout the Christmas period all the way back in 1176?

The venue for this Eisteddfod was Aberteifi (Cardigan in English) and the host was none other than Rhys ap Gruffydd (1132 – 28 April 1197), a mighty ruler of Deheubarth who is wrongly stylised today as the "Lord Rhys".

Cardigan Castle, originally a Norman structure, was captured by Rhys ap Gruffydd in the year 1166 and, perhaps, felt it right to celebrate its capture ten years later with an Eisteddfod within its grounds. This Eisteddfod was sought after far and wide, too, with participants travelling to Aberteifi from England, Scotland, Ireland and France.

It might seem like this was a friendly gesture of welcoming to foes and allies alike but there was some political motive behind the gesture, too, as Rhys - who would typically hold events at his home, native Welsh castle of Dinefwr - was clearly hosting the event at Aberteifi to send a message to Normans (who previously held the castle) and any other would-be foe. "We defeated you to claim this castle, so don't mess with me and all will be well" was likely the message.

Chairs, a valued asset in those times, were handed out as prizes to winners of the poetry and music competitions. It would be almost 300 years before another known Eisteddfod was held!

The attached image depicts a handcrafted reimagining of how the prized chairs might have looked.

Did you know they're many ways to say pancake in Cymraeg?... 🥞 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

🥞Pancakes were baked generally throughout the whole of Wales but their names, in Welsh, differed widely from county to county or from district to district:

cramwythen (parts of Carmarthenshire and Glamorgan)
crempog (in the counties of north Wales, generally)
ffroesen (parts of Glamorgan)
poncagen (parts of Ceredigion)
pancogen (part of Pembrokeshire)
pancosen (parts of Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion)

Whatever you call them, we hope you enjoy your pancakes today! Why not try this recipe from the collection?

This week marks Welsh Dark Skies Week ✨

The perfect time to get outside during the night and look up!

We are extremely lucky to have very little to no light pollution here at Treicert Farm, which means if you are staying with us, you can stargaze until your heart's content.

But remember to wrap up, it is still February! 🧣

Lansio ar wasanaeth!

16.2.25
The crew of RNLI Cardigan Lifeboat were paged at 11.18 this morning in their first shout of the year.

A member of the public had called the UK Coastguard after becoming concerned for two paddleboarders to the south of Aberporth who didn't seem to be making progress against an outgoing tide.

Cardigan's Atlantic 85 launched with Simon at the helm and Leo, Andrew and Lewis as crew, and made best speed towards Aberporth.

In the meantime, the paddleboarders, who had managed to land themselves on an isolated beach, contacted Cardigan lifeboat station on their mobile phone. After establishing they were safe in their current location, the lifeboat station passed their contact details to the UK Coastguard operations team which was coordinating the incident.

Once on scene, the lifeboat crew quickly located the two paddleboarders and brought them, and their boards, onto the lifeboat. They were then taken to Aberporth's main beach, where members of HM Coastguard Cardigan were waiting to help them ashore and warm them up.

The lifeboat returned to the lifeboat station and was readied for service by 12.45.

It takes a team to launch a lifeboat so thank you to everyone involved in today's shout:
Boat Crew: Simon (Helm), Leo, Andrew, Lewis.
Launch Authority: Rachel
Launch Vehicle Driver: Bruce
Head Launcher: Stewart
Shore Crew: Ian, Tony, Louise, Sophie, Sarah, Ben, Mat, George, Huw.

Thank you also to the members of the public who called 999 and spoke to the Coastguard. The paddleboarders were very happy to hear that their situation had been reported and the lifeboat was already on its way.

If you see anything on the coast that concerns you, or find yourself in trouble, please dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Did you get snow over the weekend? ❄️

Unfortunately we got the slightly wetter version of the forecast.

But the higher shaded ground of the Preseli Hills made for a picturesque setting.

We have plenty of availability in each of our cosy cottages this month and next.

Whether it's just you, or with your four-legged companion, partner or family, we have something to call home while you explore the rural landscapes, coastal paths and local attractions.

We will always offer the best price we can if you book direct. 😊 - treicert.com/book
