🦐 Mauritian Food & Drink 🍹

The cuisine on the island of Mauritius is superb. Inspired and derived from their cultural diversity including their Indian, European (mainly French), Chinese, African, Creole heritages. Off course the tropical island itself has influenced the taste of Mauritius, with fertile soils and the rich Indian Ocean offering an abundance of ingredients.

There are many dishes to try, so here we have just mentioned a few of the more popular dishes. The ‘Magic Bowl’ – Bol Renversé literally translates to ‘Upside down Bowl’, it’s a rice-based based dish often served with shrimps, chicken, pork, or thin slices of beef. The Mauritian Biryani is superb, prepared with rice and a choice of beef, chicken or fish, combined with onions and potatoes, it’s wonderful. Boulettes often called Mauritian Dim Sum are steamed dumplings made with a choice of prawns, fish or minced meat, they are delightful on their own or in a clear broth. Dholl Puri is popular snack and Sept Cari is a very tasty vegetarian meal where several vegetable curries are served with a flatbread.

An ‘Alouda’ is a refreshing milk based Mauritian drink which works well on a hot day with raw sugar and almond essence. A tropical island would not be the same without rum and Mauritius has a few excellent distilleries like St Aubin, Green Island Chamarel and quite a few more. Phoenix is the most popular local beer on the island and known as the ‘Beer of Mauritius’.

The balcony cabin is spacious and comfortable, the bed is perfect, king size and very comfy. There is a kettle in the room, so essential for British travellers 😊. Big TV screen, lots of storage space and our room has a large sofa which would comfortably accommodate a third passenger in the cabin. We headed to the Marketplace Buffet for a bite to eat and a few drinks while we waited for a cabin to become available. We were lucky and got an early check-in which is brilliant as can now explore the ship and get some pics while it is quieter. Service was good, we had a glass of wine, and we selected some tasty selections from the buffet. This buffet is open 20 hours a day, so there is always somewhere to get a bite if you are feeling peckish. MSC Euribia offers 10 dining venues and 21 bars, and we intend to try visit them all.
