Covering more than 20,000 km2, it feels a bit absurd referring to Ruaha National Park as one of Tanzania’s well-kept secrets. Yet it’s absolutely true that this vast, wildlife-rich terrain is often bypassed in favour of the Serengeti and northern circuit. For those in search of dramatic, varied landscapes and some spectacular game viewing, we’d argue that Ruaha is not to be missed and Asilia’s Jabali Private House is our top pick for families and small groups seeking high quality accommodation, privacy and flexibility. 📷 courtesy of

Just when we thought we had 2024 all figured out, along comes with one of the most exciting announcements yet. Due to open this September, Wilderness Bisate Reserve will have just four private villas, positioned high up in the rainforest outside Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. If it’s anything like the original this one’s going to be a major hit! Rwanda is an exquisite country to visit in its own right. Not just for gorilla tracking but also for art, an amazing crafts scene, one of the oldest forests in Africa, and some beautiful national parks.

Due to open in March 2024, Atzaró Okavango Camp is the hotly-anticipated latest addition to the African Bush Camps portfolio. Located adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve in the south eastern part of the delta, we’re excited to see what this new premiere camp delivers in one of the most exhilarating wildlife destinations on earth.

Northeast Chad’s remarkable Ennedi Massif, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of sandstone, sculpted by water and wind erosion, home to one of the largest collections of rock art in the Sahara.
Few will make it to this part of the world, but those who do are rewarded for their efforts with somewhere truly extraordinary on so many levels.

When a property announces plans to close for the best part of a year, it usually signals the start of a major transformation. So we’re expecting great things ahead for Zanzibar’s iconic Mnemba Island, closing its doors for extensive renovations for most of 2024. Once the ultimate barefoot island experience, the upgrade will no doubt bring it back into the lineup of top contenders for post-safari beach destination.

Facing one of the world’s great rivers and a reminder to savour life’s rare moments of stillness. The sound of birdsong, the rippling water and a sky that will soon be streaked with the colours of sunset. The Zambezi River offers a magnificent setting and is an ideal base from which to explore Victoria Falls, the river and its spectacular surrounding wildlife.

Angola is one of the least visited countries in Africa. With diverse landscapes, from wild Atlantic coastline to beautifully-preserved jungle and miombo woodland, the Angolan Highlands are also responsible for the Okavango Delta. This is a conservation journey through a country only just opening to tourism, and as such, still very much an expedition for the most adventurous travellers. Journey by helicopter and take in the Source Lakes region of the Angola Highlands, the Cuanvale and Cubango rivers and the spectacular 500,000-acre Cubango Game Reserve. You’ll be one of the very first to explore this beautiful, undisturbed wilderness. 📷 courtesy of

Walking amongst Gelada monkeys feels like one of life’s great privileges. For a start, they only live in the high mountains of Ethiopia, where Simien Mountains National Park offers one of the most spectacular landscapes on earth. Listed by UNESCO in 1978 as an area of outstanding beauty, nature lovers will be completely blown away by the setting, with its magnificent views over the lowlands beneath. You feel as if you have the entire place to yourself, it’s so peaceful and undisturbed. The Geladas have no reason to fear humans here and being in such close proximity is a truly unique and memorable wildlife encounter.

Travel is an opportunity to slow down, to think deeply and to appreciate some of life’s fleeting moments. Extravagance and excess don’t equal a successful travel experience if that’s not what you’re looking for. There is continuous noise around new hotel openings and the need to chase the next thing. But sometimes simplicity wins the race.

A truly excellent wildlife guide will bring little details to life and make all the small things seem like the most important part of your safari. Insects, birds, reptiles and fauna will become fascinating as you take in all the life forms that make up an ecosystem. It’s really not just about circling lion prides and competing with other vehicles for photo opportunities. There’s so much more to absorb and appreciate. Views over Kisoro on the way to Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park on the eastern edge of the Albertine Rift Valley. Home to almost half of the world’s mountain gorilla population, Bwindi is a key biodiversity area, believed to be a mere remnant of an enormous forest which once covered much of western Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It has the highest diversity of tree species in East Africa and is perhaps the most important forest in Africa for montane forest butterflies.

A beautiful light over southern Ethiopia’s Omo River - one of the world’s most remote and unexplored wildernesses, where local communities remain amongst the least changed in Africa.
The Omo River empties into Lake Turkana on the border with Kenya, a region also referred to as the “cradle of humankind” as fossil remains here have contributed more to the understanding of human evolution than any other site on the continent.

There are certain places that are so incredibly beautiful and unique that the hotel almost becomes irrelevant. The smaller details feel less important as our imaginations are stirred by everything else that surrounds us. Nyungwe National Park is a prime example of this. Often eclipsed by the gorilla trekking of northern Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, most travellers haven’t heard of Nyungwe. Yet, it is home to Africa’s oldest rainforest systems and the country’s largest and most important area of spectacular biodiversity. Waking up to the cloud forest cloaked in mist, the sounds of chimpanzees in the treetop canopies, spectacular views of Lake Kivu from the park’s highest peak, myriad birds, butterflies, reptiles and indigenous flora. Nyungwe National Park really is one of the Africa’s greatest treasures and an absolute highlight as part of a journey through Rwanda.
