In the gritty neighborhood of Regla, a commercial and industrial Havana suburb of shipyards, you find the Virgen of Regla, the Black Virgin, where Blessed Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus are both depicted with dark skin.

The Church of Our Lady of Regla, the Black Madonna is one of the best-known holy spots in Cuba where devout followers of Santeria worship. It is also a functioning Catholic church where Santería followers, dressed in white, can be seen performing dances to their Saints while a Catholic priest celebrates Mass. A small Santería shrine, adjacent to the church, has a replica of the Black Madonna, and is displayed above the Catholic church’s main altar.

The Santería religion, or Regla de Ocha, was derived from the clandestine worship African slaves utilized against the imposition of Catholicism by their slave masters in the 1800s. The mainly Yoruba people, who came enslaved from Africa to Cuba, had no icons to pray to so they essentially hijacked the Catholic relics and prayed to them instead. They created a parallelism between their original deities and the Saints of the Catholic Church. When they worshipped the Catholic Saints, as they were expected to do so by their Spanish masters, they were actually worshipping their Orishas. The slave masters could not understand why the slaves were so devout to the Saints, and not as much to Jesus. Practitioners of Santería today greatly outnumber those who practice Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, or Judaism in Cuba.

Our Story

Dan Rutherford served as International Vice President of the ServiceMaster Company for 25 years, a Fortune 100, as well as an elected Legislator and Constitutional Officer. He traveled to all Seven Continents before he was 40 years old and has visited over 70 countries. Dan’s first trip to Cuba was in 1999. Few have been to Antarctica, canoed down the Orinoco to the Amazon, led safaris in Kenya, visited the top of the world in Tibet and logged hundreds of dives as a Master Scuba diver. Dan has.

Cuba was once the playground for Americans who loved to live life on the edge. It had casinos, cheap flights and Cuban ci**rs. In 1959 Revolutionaries toppled the U.S. backed dictator and that all changed. Six decades later Cuba is still a hotbed of intrigue for its neighbor ninety miles to the north. Dan Rutherford and Global Relations will take you there.
