Dear friends and family,

It’s been almost a year since we last posted on this page. During this time, we’ve been grieving the loss of our beloved son Joey who passed away in a traffic accident in May of 2022. Joey was an amazing young man with a lot of talent, and we miss him dearly.

We’ve decided to dedicate our LovesTraveling.com to Joey because he loved traveling and exploring new places. We want to keep his memory alive by sharing our past and future travel adventures with all of you. If you also love traveling, please show support for those who can no longer travel by posting your travel adventures with our Facebook group and spreading the love for traveling with others too.

Thank you for your understanding and help,

Joe & Joanna

After nearly a month in Barcelona, Spain, we have started our Paradores road trip beginning with the Parador de Vielha. We left Barcelona yesterday and stopped in the tiny country of Andorra for lunch. The road from Andorra to Vielha was one of the most beautiful drives we have ever experienced - filled with yellow wildflowers, the majestic green and rocky beauty of the Pyrenees Mountains, waterfalls and old villages with many slate roofs. We arrived to enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant in the Parador and a beautiful view from our room. It is simply breathtaking here in Vielha - an area best known for its winter offerings but stunning year-round.

THE FORTRESS OF PRATAPGAD WAS completed in 1656 under the orders of the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji. The construction of the hilltop stronghold turned out to be an inspired piece of strategy, as just three years later it played a pivotal role in the Battle of Pratapgad, a turning point for the fledgling Maratha.

In the 1650s, the young Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ordered his peshwa, or prime minister, Moropant Trimbak Pingle, to oversee the construction of a strategic fort in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra. Built on a high spur and completed in 1656, the new two-level fort of Pratapgad (meaning “Valour Fort”) was ideally placed to defend the banks of the Nira and Koyna rivers and the strategic Par pass.

TRAVEL TIP: When you visit Spain consider booking a hotel stay at a Parador, a hotel chain that allows you to stay in castles, palaces, monasteries, fortresses and in locations with amazing views of historical sites and cities throughout Spain. We took a road trip from Barcelona to Madrid in July 2020 and were able to stay at five of the properties: Soria, Segovia, Avila, Salamanca and Toledo (photos of each included). They were having a great special at that time and we took advantage of it, so be sure to check the website for promotions: https://bit.ly/3xzUXdK. These are one-of-a-kind experiences that we highly recommend (and the food was exceptional, too)!
