Nature holding space. A beautiful (but windy) hike up to the top of Chapmans Peak with .odyssey for a networking collaboration and general catch up on the mountain. Including some intense heart focussed breathing from the lookout point to stay present and mindful in the moment.

A gentle walk this morning on Table Mountain with Candice from who is currently visiting Cape Town. We met through as we are both busy with the TTC Design Course. A beautiful walk up Lions Head this morning with my family visiting from overseas 🇮🇱 . Clear blue skies and spectacular views added to the wonder of the journey.
Walking in nature allows for solitude and introspection - something we can all do with in our busy lives.

Just a frustrating side note …. It’s illegal to fly drones in/on TMNP - as an accredited Mountain Guide I had to use my ‘big voice’ to politely ask some 🇧🇷 hikers to pack their drone away 🤨

The WTM (World Travel Market) was held at in Cape Town with a positive turnout for suppliers showcasing their offerings with an opportunity to network and create new business opportunities.

However, I feel that the Sustainable/Responsible travel offerings were undervalued with very little exposure. Very few of the bigger exhibitors made any mention of this aspect of Tourism and Travel.

Surely this ‘ratio’ has to change ? When will the sustainable and transformational travel opportunities become the forefront of our offerings ?

I met with Godfrey who recycles old coffee pod capsules and creates incredible art and sculptures.

Table Mountain National Park would like to remind visitors to take note of the following safety rules:

• Do not carry out your activity alone. Do it in groups when out hiking, trail running, cycling or horse riding, etc.
• Choose your route carefully and stick to it. Allow yourself enough time - start early. Inform someone of your route and what time you’re expected back.
• Always take waterproof clothing, and wear walking shoes or hiking boots.
• Do not attract unwanted attention by openly displaying cash, cameras, or other valuables.
• Should you have visitors to the city unfamiliar with the mountain, we suggest you engage the services of a guide to ensure they have the best possible experience. For all local visitors, we suggest they consider joining one of the many groups who hike daily across the mountain and who welcome new faces to their ranks.
• Please load our emergency number into your phone before setting off. Table Mountain National Park Emergency Number 086 110 6417. Wilderness Search and Rescue Number 021 937 0300 or dial 112
• Entry to the park remains at all times at your own risk.

Wise words indeed 🙏🏼👍🏼

In a recent article published by "Roadblock" entitled "Travel Trends for 2023 (https://lnkd.in/dFGgP2fc) one of the predicted "trends" was about transformational experiences.

This is amazing! In many ways we love to see more people talking about Transformational Travel and seeking out ways to engage more deeply with their travel practice. I do want us to be mindful and conscious though, as one thing in the article really struck me.

It may seem like small thing said in passing, but this sentence needs to be highlighted:
"...travel is now all about unashamedly bettering ourselves in a way that we wouldn’t at home."
As much as we are, at the TTC, all about Transformation through travel, this statement is problematic.

Travel is NOT all about extracting a better self through our experiences.

This is actually where we begin to pervert the concept of Transformational Travel. When we limit its profound power to "unashamedly" using it, as well as people and nature, to "find ourselves" or "evolve" solely for our own benefit we are missing the point and perpetuating the harm travel has traditionally contributed to.

Travel has played the role of taker from communities and nature for too long. Transformational Travel is about deepening connections to, yes, Self but equally to others and to nature and the beyond. It is about positive change for, yes, Self but equally for nature and for those who interact with tourism.

Let's not miss the mark here. Transformational Travel is not just mushroom trips and vision quests. It is a powerful tool for healing and thriving for all living things.

What role do images play in travel? In what ways can photography be a catalyst for transformation as well as a tool for harm? The role of pictures in the tourism world has been irrevocably altered by, first the internet, and then by social media. There are numerous pros and cons to this current state of images, but the real value in the conversation is to what outcome do pictures exist? By what pathway can capturing images become a vessel for deeper connection? This is a complex topic, but we wanted to share just a few things to spark some deeper thought around images in travel.

Can we move from "taking pictures" to "capturing moments?" What power do words have in our relationship to images? What is our motivation for creating an image? Is it to show others? If so, why? Is it to document a memory? If so, to what ends?
How do the images you capture represent the subject? Be it a landscape, a person, or a community? Who is telling the story? In what ways does your photography uplift the subject? Will you benefit economically from this image? If so, is the subject compensated? What role does the camera play in your travel experience? Is it a tool for connection or a shield from the world? Does it separate or bring together?
