The Viennese artist Franz West was born on this day in 1947.
From abstract and interactive sculptures to furniture and collage, his oeuvre possesses a character that is at once lighthearted and deeply philosophical. He instinctively rejected the idea of a passive relationship between artwork and viewer and produced work that was vigorous and imposing yet unbounded and buoyant.

Here‘s a throwback to when we last visited his studio, which he shared with his late wife Tamuna Sirbiladze until his death in 2012 and is still in its original state. For more information please contact us.

OLAFUR ELIASSON - YELLOW FOG, 2008⠀
Am Hof, Vienna 1010⠀
⠀
Olafur Eliasson (* 1967, Denmark) is one of the most renowned contemporary artists. His impressive work Yellow Fog - shown for the first time in 1998, in front of the Jewish Museum in New York - is now on permanent display at the facade of the Verbund building. ⠀
⠀
Along the building there is a grate in the sidewalk, under which 32 fluorescent yellow lamps and fog machines are installed. After dusk, every three minutes for a duration of 40 seconds, yellow fog rises up the 48-meter-long facade.⠀
⠀
For exactly one hour each day, the building gets a magical haze, which spreads out over the sidewalk and square and unfolds a play of color and fleeting forms. As Eliasson deliberately creates an artificial environment while the construction behind it remains visible, he is changing the urban scenery to open up new perspectives of perception and experience.⠀
⠀
- ⠀
⠀
’s art is driven by his interests in perception, movement, embodied experience, and feelings of self. He strives to make the concerns of art relevant to society at large. Art, for him, is a crucial means for turning thinking into doing in the world. ⠀
⠀
The was created in 2004 by VERBUND AG, Austria’s leading power company and one of Europe’s leading producers of electricity from hydropower. It is a first-class company collection with a contemporary, international focus.⠀

Can any public sculpture address the enormity of the Holocaust? Austere to the point of brutality, yet seen up close its details have a familiarity and approachability which invites a step towards it - this central memorial for the Austrian victims of the Holocaust is there to remind us of the 65,000 Jews murdered under the N**i regime. ⠀
⠀
---⠀
⠀
RACHEL WHITEREAD - MEMORIAL FOR THE AUSTRIAN JEWISH VICTIMS OF THE SHOAH, 2000⠀
⠀
Designed by British artist Rachel Whiteread (*1963) this steel and concrete memorial is as much a sculpture as a closed, windowless single storey building. Sitting on a low plinth at one end of the Judenplatz - once the centre of what was the Jewish Town - it is widely known as the Nameless Library. Its outside surfaces present themselves as shelves, turned inside out; a symbolic door conceals its interior. A library whose books are shown on the outside but are unreadable, it can be understood as an appreciation of Judaism as a religion of the „book“. However it also speaks of a cultural space of memory and loss created by the genocide of the European Jews. Engraved around its bottom are 41 names of places where Austrian Jews were put to death.⠀
⠀
Through the emphasis of void and negative casting rather than positive form and material, the memorial acts as a "counter monument" in this way opposite to the production through history of grandiose and triumphal monumental objects. ⠀
⠀
Asserting itself against its opulent baroque surroundings and echoing the military bunkers of the second world war, Whiteread's sculpture is an interruption in the square. Its uncomfortable and unapologetic presence stops you short. ⠀
⠀
Intended to evoke the tragedy and brutality of the Holocaust and in the words of Simon Wiesenthal at the unveiling: "This monument shouldn't be beautiful, It must hurt."⠀
⠀
What are your feelings towards it?⠀

Since museum and galleries are currently all closed, let's discover some amazing art in public space! Presented all around Vienna, those works stimulate and upgrade public urban spaces by giving our community a stronger sense of place and identity. Humanizing the built environment they provide an intersection between the past, present and future, between disciplines and ideas. ⠀

FRANZ WEST - 4 LARVAE (LEMUR HEADS), 2001⠀
Stubenbrücke Stadtpark, Vienna 1010⠀
⠀
The seemingly ancient 4 Larvae (Lemur Heads) made of painted, sculpted aluminum, extend up to three meters in height. They invite viewers to engage in a dialogue with the sculptural objects in combination with the symbolism of the inherently flowing water of the River Wien, whose loose, flexible, and unpredictable form leads to associations with chaos as a creative flow and a primeval material.⠀
⠀
“Ever new waters flow on those who step into the same rivers, and ever new souls emerge from it.” The Austrian artist Franz West (1947-2012) chose this maxim after Heraclitus’s “Fragment” to accompany his “Vier Lemurenköpfe” (Four Lemur Heads). While “lemures” describes the souls of the dead wandering around in the dark of night in Roman mythology, the Viennese dialect also relates to shady characters with the word “lemurs.” Mounted above the Wienfluss, the lemur heads symbolize the ghosts of the past. Yet, as the artist says, there are always new talents on the other bank from that of the deceased and forgotten.⠀
⠀
On the occasion of the retrospective Franz West: Merciless in 2001, the 4 Larvae (Lemur Heads) were displayed on the pylons of the Stubenbrücke. After an extensive restoration they have returned to this location in January 2016.⠀

Happy National Day, Austria! 🇦🇹⠀

On this day in 1955, the Austrian Parliament passed a law declaring the country’s permanent neutrality. ⠀
Occurring just one day after foreign troops withdrew in the aftermath of World War II, this declaration marked a turning point in Austria’s history. It is a direct result of the allied occupation by the Soviet Union, the United States, the United Kingdom and France between 1945 and 1955. The Soviet Union would not have agreed to the signing of a State Treaty if Austria had not committed itself to declare its neutrality after the allied forces had left the country.
Since then neutrality has become a deeply ingrained element of Austrian identity. Legally, Austrian neutrality is both a part of the country’s constitution and of international law.⠀

Usually this day is being celebrated with an official ceremony at the historic Heldenplatz (Heroes’ Square). Attended by the Federal President and Minister of Defense commemorative speeches are held and a wreath is laid at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. As this year‘s celebrating is being held online, the usually busy square remains a tranquil witness of our country’s varied history. ⠀

Another summer highlight calls for a foray beyond Vienna! The Grafenegg Festival in Lower Austria, one of the most important orchestra festivals in Europe, where music, nature and architecture merge to a grand work of art. 🎼🌿Enjoy high-calibre classical concerts against the wonderful backdrop of Grafenegg Castle, Austria’s most important example of Romantic historicism and the impressive Wolkenturm built by «the next ENTERprise» - An award-winning open-air arena, rated one of the world’s best outdoor stages for its acoustics and characterized by its imaginative design of concrete, steel and glass.

Its surrounding 32 hectars wide enchanting park grounds are a prime example of the development of the European landscape park. At first a strictly geometric baroque star garden created in the mid-17th century and later an English park – implemented in a historicising style in the mid-19th century -
today it’s a contemporary sculpture park open to the public. So far a total of eight outdoor sculptures have been erected here, the latest by critically acclaimed artist

For more information on the sculpture garden and current festival season visit And don’t forget to secure your tickets, the current season lasts until September 6. 🎫🎻☀️

One of our most favorite summer dishes is the “Steckerlfisch”. A fish on a stick, which is smoked with charcoal smoke giving it a very intense aromatic flavour.

This delicacy is popular in many Austrian regions but the center of the Steckerlfischbrater is definitely the Salzkammergut - a region known for its many fish-rich lakes. 🐟

The cultural summer in Austria is practically impossible to imagine without the Salzburg Festival. In today’s foray beyond Vienna we are celebrating its incredible centenary by having a close look at the iconic Jedermann 🤩✨⠀

The birth hour of the Salzburg Festival is generally stated as 22 August 1920 when Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s morality play was first performed on the Domplatz in the staging by Max Reinhardt. Traditionally performed outdoors, the square in front of the iconic cathedral entrance is seemingly predestined as the stage and backdrop for this religious play. After more than 700 performances the Jedermann is still a central component of the festival’s DNA and keeps on prolonging its own history, a unique occurrence in German-language theatre.⠀

The play tells a virtually universal story: God sends Death in order to summon the rich bon vivant Jedermann. In his hour of greatest need, he is abandoned by his friends, his money and his lover. Only after he has repented for his transgressions and committed himself to Christianity, may he stand armed with his faith and his good deeds before the divine judgment seat.⠀

Since its foundation the Salzburg Festival has established itself as the most important festival for opera, drama and concerts, drawing highly distinguished guests from all over the world.

Happy birthday 🍾🎂🥳👏🏻✨ @ Domplatz

It’s hot 🔥 But luckily Vienna’s many open-air swimming pools are offering plenty of attractive and refreshing chances to cool down 💦⠀
Our favorite is the Krapfenwaldbad. Vienna's highest swimming pool on the edge of the Vienna Woods is not only offering a refreshing dip but incredible views amid a nostalgic 1930s flair. A beautiful facility, drawing the smartest crowd. 😎

There are countless beautiful courtyards hidden away behind many of the opulent facades of Vienna’s town houses and palaces.

Concentrated in the first district - many behind St. Stephen's Cathedral - look out for often unassuming gates on a busy street. If you find one just walk in, take a deep breath and enter an oasis of calm, tucked away from the crowds. 🚪🧘🏻‍♀️

Can you believe it’s Friday again and already time for another foray beyond Vienna? 🥳

The Villa Bulfon can almost be regarded as a landmark of the village of Velden, located at the Wörthersee lake, one of Austria‘s most popular summer holiday resorts and society hotspots.

Built in 1481 by Anton Bulfon, Carinthia's most famous builder of his time, the villa sits majestically enthroned above the lake and has marked the townscape ever since.

Bulfon’s credo was to only design elegant buildings with an astonishingly beautiful form, of value and inspiring posterity. Still today Villa Bulfon is the stunning result of that vision.

Its historic walls amid magical natural scenery is now housing a brand new boutique hotel with its private beach club and boat dock being the perfect hideaway for luxury travelers seeking the extraordinary. ⛵️💦

Today’s foray beyond Vienna is taking us to the Skyspace-L**h. A permanent installation by artist James Turrell, who - deeply impressed by the high mountain landscape in Oberl**h, Vorarlberg - specifically designed it for this location at 1780 meters above sea level. ⛰

Predominantly located underground and seamlessly integrated in the landscape, it’s main room is equipped with a circumferential bench and opens up for an open view to the sky. The entrance occurs through a 15 meters long tunnel. The location possesses a fascinating sight axis between the prominent Biberkopf summit and the village Bürstegg on the one hand and the Omeshorn on the other hand.

As twilight falls, the walls and the ceiling of the Skyspace-L**h are bathed in color-changing light. The sky may then be perceived as part of the room through the opening.
The dome can be closed and projected with the second artistic concept, the “Ganzfeldraum”. The perception of the viewer is then irritated and distorted. The previously illuminated room and its clear structure dissolves. 🌄💜

James Turrell (*1943, Los Angeles) aims to make individuals aware of how we perceive the world. With the credo “seeing yourself seeing”, he circumscribes his artistic approach that is connected with a deep understanding for natural habitats and landscapes.

It‘s a new week and the perfect weather to check out „Platz in der Sonne“ Vienna’s latest outdoor sculpture by artist Marlene Hausegger. Temporarily placed in the Schweizergarten park, it’s starting point is the public space, where Hausegger creates social situations through sculptural interventions. Check out for dates and details ☀️⛱⠀

„Platz an der Sonne“ is part of the Belvedere‘s Community Outreach program, which explicitly targets and actively involves the various groups and communities in the social and geographical vicinity of the Belvedere 21. It is curated and overseen by Christiane Erharter. ⠀

It’s Friday and we are going to Bad Ischl! This little town in Upper Austria is widely knows as former summer capital of the great Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and has been associated with the Habsburg imperial dynasty for at least 700 years.

The most magnificent remnant of this time is the Imperial Kaiservilla, the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Empress Elisabeth, wo described it as "heaven on earth". (Who remembers the Sissi trilogie we watched during Christmas?)

Originally a wedding present on the occasion of their marriage in 1854, the Imperial Villa has always been a haven of peace and tranquillity. Yet also European history has been written there for many decades, making Bad Ischl the secret capital of the mighty Danube monarchy.
In 1914 the Emperor declared here war on Serbia, triggering events that subsequently led to World War I.

Today parts of the villa are still occupied by Habsburg descendants, others are open to the public. It retains the ambience of a bygone age in the 19th century, and its association with great people and events. It does not take much imagination to visualise the crowned heads and major statesmen of the world who were received here, or the world-famous composers, writers and artists who flocked to Ischl in the wake of the Emperor’s court during the decades of that glorious Indian summer of imperial Austria around the year 1900.

In close proximity to Lake Neusiedl one can find The Pit - a land art project by Peter Noever, Austrian designer and curator–at–large of art, architecture and media.

Existing since the early 1970s and under constant development, Noever is combining architecture with earth art to create a dialogue with the landscape, a place to contemplate the natural and the man-made. "I am dependent on space," he said. "So I create my own space."

The Pit’s starting point is a traditional, more than 200 years old wine cellar built of sandstone. The northern end of the cellar was uncovered, the cellar wall was moved inwards, so that a vaulted, wind-protected space with benches and tables made of sandstone - from the connected quarry - was created as contemplation chamber and a place to eat and drink.

A more than 70 meter long passage with walls of whitewashed concrete, is built into the earth, offering a view of the sky overhead.

In 2019 The Pit was placed under monument protection by the Austrian Federal Monuments Office BDA.

It’s finally summer and most Covid travel restrictions in Austria are lifted! In order to celebrate, each Friday we are going to and introduce you to beautiful and special locations, which are well worth a weekend getaway. ☀️🏰💦⛱🍽

Today we are showing you the Loos Haus am Kreuzberg, a modern gem in the small alpine town of Semmering - a magnificent resort along the Suedbahn train route from Vienna to Triest, which used to be popular with Viennese society as well as multi-national guests from all levels of the royal monarchy.

In 1930 the Viennese industrialist Paul Khuner commissioned Adolf Loos to build a chalet overlooking the Semmering and Rax mountains. In 1959, the Steiner family converted it into a hotel and restaurant; members of the family have run it ever since. Rooms are sparingly furnished, with built-in furniture and unexpected color schemes, such as vibrant blues and greens. Custom hardware and detailed finishes throughout the house make it truly modern, while cherishing its beautiful mountainous location.
