🏊‍♀️ The Dutch tradition of swimming in the sea on Jan 1st is known as the “Nieuwjaarsduik” (New Year’s Dive). This tradition involves brave individuals, often dressed in quirky costumes or swimwear, taking a plunge into the cold waters of the North Sea or other bodies of water to celebrate the beginning of the new year.

🌊The Nieuwjaarsduik has become a popular and festive event in the Netherlands, drawing participants and spectators alike. Many coastal towns and cities organize official New Year’s Dives, complete with lively atmospheres, music, and sometimes even hot drinks to help participants warm up afterward.

❄️ While the water temperatures can be quite chilly, the Nieuwjaarsduik is seen as a symbol of freshness, renewal, and a courageous start to the new year. It is not only a fun and invigorating way to kick off the year but also a social event that brings people together for a shared experience 😜

Let’s talk about Dutch cuisine. Does it even exist? Well, the simple answer is both, yes and no=)

Traditional Dutch food is defined by history, geographical location and the climate of the country: centuries of battling with water and icy winds, most of population back in the days farming land or sailing northern waters, resulted in modern Dutch cuisine consisting mainly of simple hearty meals. Farmers and seamen had to fill their stomachs well.

But this post is not about the food that makes you full, it is about the little joys of life Dutch people call “tootje” and the rest of the world calls desserts.

3 top desserts one absolutely has to try when visiting the Netherlands are:

🥮 Appeltaart met Slaagroom - the king of all Dutch desserts, apple pie with whipped cream.
Don’t be surprised when you’ll get served a huge piece, that’s the way they do it here! And don’t upset your waiter by rejecting a hearty portion of whipped cream that goes with it. The trick about this pie is that the dough is minimal and it’s filled to the top with delicious warm apples spiced with cinnamon. Nobody can resist!

🧇 Stroopwafels - legendary Dutch waffles. Round waffles filled with caramel syrup can be found in many parts of the world, but here you can get them freshly baked. The local trick if you get the supermarket version is to put your waffle on top of a cup filled with hot tea or coffee and wait a bit. That’s when the syrup melts and your waffle becomes soft and truly Dutch!

🥞 Poffertjes - tiny pancakes topped with powdered sugar are perfect both for breakfast and dessert. They are sold all over the Netherlands and are universally loved by young and small. Don’t miss a chance to try one!

NDSM

These four enigmatic letters represent an area in the north of Amsterdam.
⠀
⛴ To get to the NDSM shipyard you need to take a free ferry from the Central Station. The journey will take about 20 minutes and you will come ashore to a completely different, alternative Amsterdam.
⠀
🏭 What does look like? Imagine a large space with old factory buildings, garages covered in graffiti, worn-out streetcars carrying dreamcatchers... A strange and alluring place has become a stronghold for designers, hippies and other creative personalities. It is here that the famous five-star Crane Hotel Faralda is located. It was placed in the most unusual place - the former port crane whose height is 50 meters.
⠀
⚓️ Previously NDSM was a large shipyard where ships were manufactured. In 1984 when the shipbuilding company Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij closed, many workshops and warehouses got empty and neglected. But very soon industrial premises were mastered by the creative community. The post-apocalyptic atmosphere of this place is ideal for festivals, concerts and exhibitions. Here you can find the headquarters of companies such as MTV and Red Bull. Thus, the former shipyard has become the cultural nerve of Amsterdam. People come here for inspiration, unusual shopping, vibrant nightlife. The atmosphere absolutely opposite to that of the city center.

NDSM spirit is very close to Brooklyn and Berlin. It is a place of freedom and self-expression. The external abandonment and dilapidation of the area does not frighten, but more and more attracts representatives of the creative community from all over the world. Bars, restaurants, hotels, offices and workshops are well located in the area.

🏺 Once a month one of the largest and best flea markets in Europe ijhallen.nl operates here. Vinyl, vintage, antiques fill the huge IJ-Hallen building.

Mystery in the attic
⠀
🗝 For all lovers of secrets and mysteries - the doors of an amazing museum are open. It is located in the center of the old city. A typical Amsterdam house of a wealthy merchant from the 17th century. Having run through it with a glance you shrugging your shoulders will go further. But we advise you to stop. Not every town house has its own secret Catholic church in the attic!
⠀
🏤 This unusual museum "Our Lord in the Attic" is indeed full of mysteries! You will feel the spirit of antiquity and for several hours become the guest of the German merchant Jan Hartman. This is an opportunity to be in a rich merchant's house of the Golden Age. Before you get to the church itself, you will have to wander through the old corridors, look into the rooms and climb the creaky stairs.
⠀
Why the church was a mystery, you will learn in the museum itself. There you will be offered a wonderful audio guide, which describes in detail the times and customs of ancient times. You will hear many stories about former residents and be surprised at how many historically valuable things have been preserved thanks to cesspools and latrines. And you will also see wardrobe beds in which people of the 17th century slept.
⠀
⛪ In the spacious attic, you will find yourself in a wonderful pink church and appreciate the beauty of its decoration. It used to house 150 parishioners! By the way, masses are still held in this church which was founded in 1663. From the windows you can look at Amsterdam, its houses, canals and temples, and then again pay attention to interesting church details: authentic paintings, an organ, straw rugs. Even the little room where the priest dressed before the service will not be hidden from you. The old house can be reached through an underground passage through the new museum wing. There is a shop and a bright café overlooking the canals.

If you are tired of the idle bustle of the big city, then it's time to move beyond it!

🚞 Our first recommendation is to buy a train ticket and go from the Central Station to the wonderful village of Zaanse Schans. A surprisingly short trip takes you to a paradoxically different place. Green fields, fabulous houses and a whole family of elegant windmills will stretch before your eyes.

The Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum. Despite the seeming antiquity, the village appeared on these water meadows not so long ago. In the late 60s of the 20th century houses and mills began to be brought from all over the country. And then an ethno-village appeared out of nowhere. About thirty buildings demonstrate Dutch wooden architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries in all its glory.

Surprisingly, people live in the "museum" houses. Some of them are used as restaurants, hotels, shops. The mills are also in working order. They catch the wind and, creaking, do their job.

The most charming thing is the names of the mills. In the top of the most tender "Young Sheep" and "Clover". You can go into some mills and see how the work process goes. At the most fragrant mill, De Huisman, you will smell the scents of cinnamon and other spices, and at De Kat, you will see how colors are born.

🧀 You can also visit a cheese factory and try different types of cheese. And if you are wondering what it's like to walk in wooden shoes, you should look into the workshop where clogs are made. There all the staff fly day in and day out in these traditional Dutch shoes which proves that clogs are comfortable. It's nice to linger in the Zaanse Schans until the evening to watch the warm lights lit in the houses and feel the peaceful comfort of this place.

Zaanse Schans is an idyllic picture of the good old Holland that will give you a few wonderful hours away from Amsterdam.
Our guides will be happy to introduce you to the Zaanse Schans on a private sightseeing tour which is only one message away!
