SUNFLOWER TRAIL HISTORY
🌻 The Sunflower Trail has blossomed into a beloved tradition on the Liverpool Plains, thanks to the efforts of local farmers Ian Carter and Geoff Barwick.
What started as a way to raise money for community causes now draws thousands of visitors every year. 🌾
In 2022, the trail was officially formalised by The Plains Inc., bringing together sunflower lovers from across the region. Local volunteers from the Sunflowers on the Plains group organise a growing competition and fun events each summer. 🌻✨
In its first year, over 5,000 visitors explored stunning sunflower fields and celebrated all things sunflower! This summer, make sure you’re one of them! 🌞
Stay tuned across our socials for more info about the 2025 Sunflower Trail.

BEFORE, DURING & AFTER: BARLEY HARVEST ✅
Ever wondered how grain gets from field to table? Here’s a quick breakdown from a barley harvest in the Liverpool Plains:
1️⃣ Timing
Farmers monitor the barley’s moisture levels and wait until the grain is dry enough for harvesting 🌞
2️⃣ Machinery
The header (on the left) cuts and separates the barley from its stalks in one smooth process. The chaser bin (right) helps store the cut grain on the go 🚜
3️⃣ Transport
After the grain is harvested, the barley is carefully stored in silos or transported via trucks to be processed into food, beverages or animal feed 📦
Fluffy fields of white mean it's cotton picking season! Get on the road and see for yourself the origin story of your favourite tshirt, but as always beware of increased truck and heavy machinery movement as our farmers get it to market. Follow along and we'll show you how it gets out of the paddock and on the road to you! #visitnsw #australia #farming #australianfarming #harvest #agritourism #cottonaustralia #thankafarmer #australianagriculture #visitliverpoolplains #visitquirindi #cotton
It's sorghum harvest time again!
Did you know...
➡️ Grain sorghum was first grown in New South Wales in 1940.
➡️ In Australia, the primary use of grain sorghum is for livestock feed. It is also incresingly used for ethanol production. In other parts of the world, it is used to make porridge, bread and couscous.
➡️ Almost all Australian sorghum is produced in Northern NSW and Queensland.
Now's the time to go for a drive across the Liverpool Plains and check out all the sorghum harvest action, with incredible copper fields stretching as far as the eye can see. Just beware of increased truck and heavy machinery movement on the roads as our farmers get it out of the paddock and to market.
