As winter approaches in the Smokies, Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road) is closed beginning Monday, Dec. 2, for the season. It reopens in April 2025.

Fortunately, you can enjoy the views from Kuwohi through the chilly months ahead! A new, year-long we**am, funded by Friends of the Smokies, was installed on November 14, atop Kuwohi: www.nps.gov/subjects/air/we**ams.htm?site=grcd

The new we**am view from Kuwohi looks across the eastern half of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. On a clear day from the camera location, it's possible to see the southeastern end of the Smokies, along with prominent peaks, including Mt. Sterling (23 miles away) and peaks beyond the park boundary, like Mt. Mitchell (71 miles away) and even Big Bald (86 miles away).

You might even be able to see into the new year!

Update from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park ~ Please be sure to check their website for any updates before you plan your day. Stay safe❗️

News Release—The National Park Service continues to assess conditions and address damage following the impacts from Hurricane Helene in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park experienced substantial damage particularly in North Carolina, including Balsam Mountain, Big Creek and Cataloochee Valley.

Within the park, the Cataloochee Valley saw the most significant impacts from Hurricane Helene and will be closed until further notice as staff address damage. Flooding from Rough Fork Creek washed out several roads in the valley. Upper Cataloochee Valley Road saw the worst damage and is not drivable. Various levels of erosion and flooding impacted all trails in Cataloochee Valley and nearly all footlog bridges in the area were washed away during the storm. Cataloochee Valley also experienced fallen trees, flooding at campsites and damaged power lines. There were impacts to historic buildings, particularly the Caldwell Barn, which park staff are currently working to stabilize.

The Balsam Mountain and Big Creek areas are also currently closed until further notice due to storm damage and safety concerns.

Most trails on the Tennessee side of the park are open; several trails on the North Carolina side are closed. The park continues to assess the trails on the eastern end of the park to find the western edge of the damage in the backcountry. Examples of trails that were severely impacted include Big Creek Trail, which saw damage throughout its length and lost a 70-foot steel bridge and its abutments. Gunter Fork Trail experienced a landslide that took out 100 feet of trail.

While there has been some significant damage in the eastern area of the park, many miles of trails in western sections of the park have low impacts and few downed trees. Visitors planning to hike in the Smokies are encouraged (as always) to check the park website and/or talk to staff in visitor centers or the backcountry office about current trail conditions.

Most park roads are open with a few exceptions including Foothills Parkway East, Lakeview Drive, roads in Cataloochee Valley, roads in Balsam Mountain area and Parsons Branch Road (visitors should check the park map). US441/Newfound Gap Road is open 24 hours a day. Commercial vehicles are prohibited in the park, with the exception of the Spur.

All park visitor centers and most park facilities are open. All Tennessee park campgrounds are currently open. North Carolina campgrounds are currently closed, and park staff continue to assess for when they can be safely opened.

🏔 Welcome to the HAUS OF THE SETTING SUN 🏔
🌄The Haus of the Setting Sun will WOW you!!
The 2 master bedrooms have their own private decks to look out over the amazing mountain and city views. From the Haus decks, or sitting in the hot tub, you will see the gorgeous setting sun every evening while grilling or just unwinding after a long day of hiking in the National Park or skiing at Ober Gatlinburg just a few minutes down the road. You will be able to soak in the large indoor whirlpool bath tub after a fun trip to Dollywood or a shopping spree in the Arts and Crafts Community on Glades Road. On those cold winter nights, you can cozy up in front of the wood burning fireplace while you sink into the large overstuffed leather chair or sofa.

🔸 Relax and unwind in this beautiful 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom spacious chalet with
views of the mountains for miles, along with the towns of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Bedrooms are very roomy and can sleep up to 5 guests comfortably.

🔸 The first floor Master Bedroom is a king master suite with comfortable and cozy decor and en-suite bathroom. The second floor Master Bedroom is also very spacious and bright, with an open concept floor plan, a whirlpool bath jetted tub and en-suite bathroom. There is also a very cozy sleeping nook with a twin bed.

🔸 The bright and fully stocked kitchen with all new appliances will melt any cooks heart! Coffee lovers will have a choice between drip coffee maker or a Keurig. The bedrooms are equipped with flat screen TVs along with the main living area. You will be able to enjoy high speed internet using Spectrum. On those hot summer days you can walk a few yards to the community pool to cool off, and relax in the hot tub at night!

🔸 This area is so lovely. It is in a cul-de-sac with very little traffic. You are on the tip top of the mountain at Panoramic Point with the most spectacular views! You can't get any higher than this! You might be visited by bears quite often but PLEASE DON"T FEED THEM and make sure your car doors are locked!! It is a must see and a must stay!

❤ We fell in love with this area and knew we wanted to have a home here. We hope you love it as much as we do. If you have a larger group, but still want your space, we can accommodate them as we have another property across the street that can sleep 7, Haus of the Rising Sun!
