Starting January 8, 2025, the UK will require electronic travel authorization for visitors from Europe, the US, and other countries as part of its expanded Electronic Travel Authorization program. The program, which was launched in 2023 for several Middle Eastern countries, aims to enhance the security and efficiency of the UK's border and immigration system. Travelers will need to apply for an ETA and pay a fee of £10 before their trip, which will be valid for multiple visits to the UK for up to six months at a time over two years or until their passport expires.

A similar European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be required for visitors from 60 visa-exempt countries, including the US, to enter 30 European countries for short stays starting in the first half of 2025. The ETIAS authorization will cost €7 and be valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, allowing for multiple entries into the participating countries. Applications can be submitted from November 27 for non-Europeans and from March 5 for Europeans.
