It is a beautiful small town known for the amalgamation of different cultures, spirituality and modernity, Here one can visit the famous temples of narsingh swami, nav durga and vasudev. These temples are more than two thousand years old. It is worthwhile here to mention that according to skandapuran (kedarkhand) the pilgrimage to Badrinath puri starts from Narsing swami temple and and also ends here, Joshimath is also the base for a number of treks and mountaineering expeditions.
In the east of Joshimath at an altitude of 4200 m. is mount Sumeru. In the north of mount of mount Sumeru is Neel mountain, Neel is a Sanskrit word which means blue, This mount is abundant with blue Sapphire, There are four peaks of this mountain. According to Ramcharit manas and the puranas on one of the peaks there there was a peepal tree, on the second there was a pakar tree, on the third a mango tree and on the fourth a bargad tree, But today these trees are no more there.
