Mochi of The Highlands

Traditionally, khao pook nga is considered an auspicious sweet, and is given out to monks and village neighbours during the annual harvesting of rice in the cool season, which coincides with the new year.
Aside from being a delicious and propitious snack, it’s also a food waste solution: villagers find it’s a tasty way to use up and store leftover sticky rice. There are health benefits, too: nga kee mon is said to help to warm the body, relieve constipation and reduce blood cholesterol.

'The sun shines not on us but in us. The rivers flow not past, but through us. Thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, making them glide and sing. The trees wave and the flowers bloom in our bodies as well as our souls, and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song of the rocks in the heart of the mountains is our song, our very own, and sings our love.'

Important Akha Festivals
One of the most famous Akha festivals is the swing festival.
The four-day festival takes place in late-August and is known by the Akha as, Yehkuja, (or Loa Cher Bee Err) which loosely translates as “eating bitter rice”, a phrase which is believed to be a references the previous year’s dwindling rice supply and incorporates the hope that the expected rains will soon water the newly planted rice crop.
This festival takes place at the peak of the rainy season, which is the end of August or the beginning of September.

Perhaps the most important annual festival for the Akha people is commonly known as the Swing Festival

The Language of the Akha
The Akha language is part of the Lolo/Yi branch of the Tibeto-Burman language group. There is no traditional written language, but there's a variety of schemes for writing Akha. These have been developed by missionaries or linguists which employ Roman, Thai or Burmese characters; however, literacy in Akha is still virtually non-existent.

Akha Beliefs

Though many Akha, especially younger people, profess Christianity, Akha Zang (The Akha Way), a total lifestyle prescribed in the oral literature of the Akha people, still runs deep in the consciousness of older generations.

The Akha Way combines animism, ancestor worship and their deep relationship with the land. For an Akha, the Akha Way is a way of life which extends beyond simple religious practise and infuses every aspect of their existence. The Akha Way emphasises rituals in everyday life and stresses strong family ties; every Akha male can recount his genealogy back over fifty generations to the first Akha.

A Little About The Akha Tribe

Akha people live primarily within Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces, in the northernmost part of Thailand. Closely related to the Hani of Yunnan province, China, the total Akha-Hani population is numbered at around 2-3 million, but just over 70,000 reside within Thai territory.

Akha speak a language in the Lolo/Yi branch of the Tibeto-Burman language group, but have no traditional written language - though there are various Akha writing systems Akha developed by missionaries employing Roman, Thai or Burmese characters. They are traditionally subsistence farmers, growing a variety of crops including rice and corn - but today, more and more young Akha are becoming budding entrepreneurs!

We'll definitely be meeting and spending time with some of our friendly Akha pioneers on the next Et in Arcadia trip!

History of Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is an area rich in history and culturally one of the most diverse in Thailand.

The region is home to numerous hill tribes including the Akha, Lisu, Mien and Hmong. The area is rich with handicraft items such as material, wood-carvings and silver ornaments produced by these traditional peoples.

Alongside its traditional Thai temples, Chiang Rai also has a significant number of temples bearing a distinctly Burmese influence.
