Hiking - "I don't like either the word or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains - not hike! Do you know the origin of that word 'saunter?' It's a beautiful word. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going, they would reply, 'A la sainte terre,' 'To the Holy Land.' And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not 'hike' through them."

I don’t think anything quite steals the heart of a New Englander like a baby moose. They’re gangly and peculiar, but cute! Maybe in a funny way they remind us of our own amusing-looking offspring when they’re newborn. I spied this healthy female nipping at some twiggy snacks in an open forest of beautiful hemlocks in the White Mountains. Did you know these big swarthy beasts have to survive the winter eating nothing but bark and twigs? Here in New England, it hasn’t been a terribly hard winter, and biologists across the region have been noting fewer ticks on the moose calves they’ve recently studied, so the word on the street is that we should have a larger-than-usual crop of youngsters surviving this year! This beautiful yearling calf has made it through her first winter and looks sleek and fantastic, so I have great hope for her and the rest of the moose herd. Here’s to a wonderful summer ahead, for the moose and all of us hopeful moose-seekers across the region!

The whispers of spring are spreading on the warm days of April. The ice-imprisoned brooks have begun to flow with a bit more freedom, and the river rocks, in their golden splendor, are once again bathed in the purest cascades of babbling meltwater. The brooks prophesy of warmer times and longer days, greening riverbanks, wiggling trout and splashing children, laughing waters and the many other joyful songs of summer.
